Chicago actor and musician Yuri Lane mixes prayers for Middle Eastern peace into his rap verses.

Hasidic Jewish rapper Yitzchak Jordan, 28, who calls himself Y-love, combines Arabic lyrics with his English, Hebrew and Yiddish rhymes on his upcoming album This is Babylon, scheduled for release in the spring. Jordan, who also has read the Quran, believes that greater education in religious writings will help bring understanding. In his song 6000, he criticizes religious and political leaders who preach intolerance.

Palestinian singer Sameh Zakout, 23, known as Saz, who was raised in the Israeli city of Ramle, near Tel Aviv, also uses music as a non-violent means of protest.

"I don't see my Palestine being built by blood," says Zakout, who will tour in France in October to publicize his album Min Yum. "It should be built by negotiations, not bombings in Tel Aviv. My bullets are my rhymes. My M-16 is my microphone."

As a member of Northern California’s Paskenta Band of Nomlaki Indians, he is the tribe’s linguistic compiler and the holder of many of its songs and ceremonies. As a member of the Hawaiian community, he has learned the language, chants, dances, and many of the crafts to a remarkable degree. His diverse cultural background gives depth and significance to his performances. Although Pueo is considered a contemporary artist, he would say that his first duty, above all else, is to honor tradition. A spiritual being, Pueo believes it is the responsibility of humankind to maintain a balance between the spiritual and physical worlds. He believes the spiritual affects the physical: “I always let spirit move me; it’s never led me astray.”

Thousands of monks detained in Burma's main city of Rangoon will be sent to prisons in the far north of the country, sources have told the BBC.

About 4,000 monks have been rounded up in the past week as the military government has tried to stamp out pro-democracy protests.

The monks have been disrobed and shackled, the sources told BBC radio's Burmese service. There are reports that the monks are refusing to eat.

The crackdown, in which unarmed protesters were beaten, tear-gassed, and shot at, has attracted condemnation from abroad, and even from Burma's neighbours in the Association of South East Asian Nations (Asean)
