Descendants of Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse break away from US

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The Lakota Indians, who gave the world legendary warriors Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, have withdrawn from treaties with the United States, leaders said Wednesday.

A delegation of Lakota leaders delivered a message to the State Department on Monday, announcing they were unilaterally withdrawing from treaties they signed with the federal government of the United States, some of them more than 150 years old.

They also visited the Bolivian, Chilean, South African and Venezuelan embassies, and will continue on their diplomatic mission and take it overseas in the coming weeks and months, they told the news conference.

Nam Prik Pao recipe
Heat garlic and shallots in oil and remove to a bowl
Place red chillies in the pan with some oil and fry until they go dark in colour. Then set aside
Mix shrimp paste with the rest of the ingredients and pound in a mortar and pestle
Return the mixture to the heat until it becomes a thick dark coloured paste

Burning chilli sparks terror fear

A pot of burning chilli sparked fears of a biological terror attack in central London.

The restaurant had been preparing Nam Prik Pao, a red-hot Thai dip which uses extra-hot chillies which are deliberately burnt

"My boss rang me and said I had to get out of the building because of a chemical attack."

She added: "Because we're Thai, we're used to the smell of chillies."

HOW MODEL CAMPUS SECURITY COULD WORK

Few campuses have elaborate security, but experts suggest the following options could help keep staff and students safe
1) Wall provides secure perimeter and stops public entering campus
2) Security guards control access, with ID cards used by staff and students. CCTV cameras record movements of people and cars
3) Control room provides airport-style checks and acts as base for 25-30 campus police at typical college. Security systems monitored
4) Key buildings including labs and dorms have own security guard, CCTV and swipe card entry. Forced entry raises alarm
5) Tannoy system/siren conveys key information or raises alarm
6) Texts, automated phone calls and e-mails from control room warn students and staff of emergency and keep them updated

clipper's remarks: When I read this in the BBC, I thought it was just sensational journalism. I followed the link trails and went to web sites in question. Horrifying. Appalling. I remember visiting Ms Sierra's blog years ago when I started out in web design. This woman is a long time blogger advocating creativity and technology in a well written blog. I would read her stuff, zeldmans stuff among others.

Why she should be threatened in an extremely frightening manner is beyond me.

While anonymity gives some freedom of expression and freedom of the constraints of identity for surfers and bloggers alike, it by no means should allow people to be able to make this extreme level of threat to another human being regardless of gender.
Issues with free speech and terrorism do not necessarily mean Iraq and the war.

Irrational hatred takes on so many insidious forms...

Blog death threats spark debate

Ms Sierra described on her blog how she had been subject to a campaign of threats, including a post that featured a picture of her next to a noose.

One of the issues raised is the question of how women bloggers are treated online.

Ms Sierra, author of popular blog Creating Passionate Users, began receiving death threats four weeks ago.

While blogging feuds are common, she believes the campaign against her is more likely to be because she is a woman in the male-dominated technology world.

It’s Not Hillary or Obama, it’s Hillary AND Obama!

The next presidential election in 2008 seemingly poses two blunt questions for those voting for the Democrat candidate: (1) Is America ready for a woman president (Hillary Clinton)? (2) Is America ready for a black president (Barack Obama)? I use the term “seemingly” because, if some political masterminds are correct, voters may be casting their ballots for a female president and a black vice president.

According to those who practice punditry, forces are at work behind the scenes testing the waters and sampling the polls to see how such a female/black combination would fare among the electorate. Public opinion seems to run along prejudicial lines if either candidate is considered separately - racism versus sexism. But if both Senators Clinton and Obama are thought of as a team, race and gender take a back seat to winning the White House.

Of the list of potential Democrat candidates in 2008, Hillary Clinton is currently supported by 28 percent of Democrat voters while Barack Obama gets 17 percent (CNN poll, November 2006). Together, the duo could garner nearly half the Democrat vote plus any Republican or independent crossover votes they might accrue.

Why would American voters accept a female/black team when they ostensibly would reject either candidate running separately? First of all, most Americans say they would vote for a woman or a black for president if the circumstances were correct. Americans have become used to females occupying the top spot in other countries: Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, President Mary McAleese of Ireland, President Michelle Bachelet of Chile, and at least nine other women currently in power. And let’s not forget Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher who headed the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990, and Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of India, whose two separate terms spanned 18 years.

John McCain’s War On Blogs

John McCain has made clear that he doesn’t like the blogosphere.

Now he has introduced legislation that would treat blogs like Internet service providers and hold them responsible for all activity in the comments sections and user profiles. Some highlights of the legislation:

– Commercial websites and personal blogs “would be required to report illegal images or videos posted by their users or pay fines of up to $300,000.”

– Internet service providers (ISPs) are already required to issue such reports, but under McCain’s legislation, bloggers with comment sections may face “even stiffer penalties” than ISPs.

— Social networking sites will be forced to take “effective measures” — such as deleting user profiles — to remove any website that is “associated” with a sex offender. Sites may include not only Facebook and MySpace, but also Amazon.com, which permits author profiles and personal lists, and blogs like DailyKos, which allows users to sign up for personal diaries.

Kevin Bankston of the Electronic Frontier Foundation notes that this proposal may be based more “on fear or political considerations rather than on the facts.” When he introduced his legislation to the Senate, McCain offered no evidence that children are being victimized by people who post comments on blogs.

McCain’s legislation could deal a serious blow to the blogosphere. Lacking resources to police their sites, many individual blogs may have to shut down open discussion.
