Manu Chao (born José-Manuel Thomas Arthur Chao on June 21, 1961 in Paris, France) is a French-born singer and political activist of Spanish origin. He sings mainly in French, Spanish and English and occasionally in a number of other languages. Chao began his musical career with Hot Pants, a French band that combined several musical styles and languages. The musician then founded the interracial band Mano Negra with several friends in 1987, becoming a solo artist after it disbanded.

Manu Chao sings in the English, Spanish, Galician, Portuguese, French, Arabic and Wolof languages, often mixing them in the same song. His music has many influences: rock, French chanson, Iberoamerican salsa, reggae, ska, and Algerian raï.

Many of Chao's lyrics are about love, living in ghettos, immigration, and often carry a left-wing message.

Though Manu Chao is one of the world's best selling artists, he is less well-known in the English-speaking world.

clipper's remarks: I was listening to an internet radio neosoulcafe.com (which, by the way, internet radio is under threat). And I heard a song called "my block" by Tupac Shakur. While I was fairly familar with Tupac, I had a peep over on wikipedia and found this.

Tupac was a clever and angry young man. His album Thug Life was kind of a clever acronym of sorts....

For some reason, it reminded me of the faces of the children I have seen in Iraq photos. The victims of war. And I am reminded of what we do, what we have done, may not be over when we pull the troops out from those countries we have invaded. A long stretch from thug rapper to iraq? maybe? maybe not.

clipper's remarks: Mary Jane Grant was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1805. Her father was a Scottish soldier, and her mother a Jamaican. Mary learned her nursing skills from her mother, who kept a boarding house for invalid soldiers. Although technically 'free', being of mixed race, Mary and her family had few civil rights - they could not vote, hold public office or enter the professions. In 1836, Mary married Edwin Seacole but the marriage was short-lived as he died in 1844.

Following the cessation of hostilities in 1856 she found herself stranded and almost destitute, and was saved from penury by the Commander-in-Chief of the British Forces

Today she is noted not only for her bravery and medical skills but as "a woman who succeeded despite the racial prejudice of influential sections of Victorian society"

As the nation celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., it is fitting that Representative John Lewis, D. Ga., and Senator Edward M. Kennedy, D. Mass., should introduce the Civil Rights Act of 2008 this week, just days after King's birthday. The Act would restore civil rights protections Americans have counted on for decades.

"The introduction of the Civil Rights Act of 2008 could not come at a better time," said Wade Henderson, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights.

The bill will also hold state employers accountable for age discrimination, protect students from unlawful harassment in our schools, and improve the mechanisms of accountability for other civil rights and workers' rights violations.

Civil and human rights groups representing various communities applaud Sen. Kennedy's and Rep. Lewis' commitment to reversing the recent rollback in core civil rights protections.

Chicago actor and musician Yuri Lane mixes prayers for Middle Eastern peace into his rap verses.

Hasidic Jewish rapper Yitzchak Jordan, 28, who calls himself Y-love, combines Arabic lyrics with his English, Hebrew and Yiddish rhymes on his upcoming album This is Babylon, scheduled for release in the spring. Jordan, who also has read the Quran, believes that greater education in religious writings will help bring understanding. In his song 6000, he criticizes religious and political leaders who preach intolerance.

Palestinian singer Sameh Zakout, 23, known as Saz, who was raised in the Israeli city of Ramle, near Tel Aviv, also uses music as a non-violent means of protest.

"I don't see my Palestine being built by blood," says Zakout, who will tour in France in October to publicize his album Min Yum. "It should be built by negotiations, not bombings in Tel Aviv. My bullets are my rhymes. My M-16 is my microphone."

Three Little Pigs 'too offensive'

A story based on the Three Little Pigs has been turned down from a government agency's annual awards because the subject matter could offend Muslims.

The digital book, re-telling the classic fairy tale, was rejected by judges who warned that "the use of pigs raises cultural issues".

The judges also attacked Three Little Cowboy Builders for offending builders.

The book's creative director, Anne Curtis, said that the idea that including pigs in a story could be interpreted as racism was "like a slap in the face".

They also warned that the story might "alienate parts of the workforce (building trade)".

A society where it’s ok for each of us to be hit with 5,000 advertising messages every 24 hours, usually without our permission, but creating a piece of art and placing it in public yourself without permission can land you in prison. This isn’t just about the pros and cons of file sharing - this is about an entire species losing its sense of perspective, failing to understand the potential of one of its most precious (and yet most abundant) resources.
