Artists face charges over fake nuclear blast on Czech TV

A group of Czech artists who staged a fake nuclear blast over national television will be sent to criminal trial, a state prosecutor said Thursday.

Six artists were charged last month with spreading false information, said Dusan Ondracek, the state prosecutor in Trutnov, a town 155 kilometres northeast of Prague. A seventh defendant has yet to be charged, he said.

Last June, the artists hacked into a national television weather broadcast showing a panoramic shot of a mountain resort town and the Krkonose or Giant Mountains.

They created a bright flash of light, followed by the image of a mushroom cloud.

Ondracek alleges they tampered with equipment at the station to achieve the effect.

The Prague-based Ztohoven group called the project Media Reality and said it was a commentary on how easily the media can be manipulated.

However Czech Television did not regard the project as art and pressed for charges, called the work "improper."

The number of weather-related disasters has quadrupled over the past 20 years and the world should do more to prepare for them, the aid agency Oxfam says.

Global warming is to blame for the growing number of weather disasters, Oxfam adds.

An average of 500 such disasters are now taking place each year, compared to 120 in the 1980s, the report says.

The number of floods has increased six-fold over the same period.

The agency expresses particular concern about the increase in small and medium-sized weather events, which it says affect great numbers of people, but do not attract as much international aid as large, well-publicised natural disasters.

The report argues that climate change is responsible for the growing number of weather-related disasters - more intense rain, combined with frequent droughts, make damaging floods much more likely.

It's hard to imagine the force of nature that is Niagra Falls ever coming to a dead halt, but as documented in this extraordinary picture, the falls were frozen solid . The picture is reputed to have been taken in 1911, but historically, the last time the falls completely froze was in 1886.

DEVELOPING STORY: The tsunami advisory was issued Wednesday night for island state of Hawaii after two powerful earthquakes within minutes of each other rocked the coast of Peru about 100 miles from the capital city of Lima.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported the advisory could be upgraded to a warning, and that wave impact was estimated to hit Hawaii at 2:14 a.m local time, or 8 a.m. EST.

The center also issued a tsunami warning for South America's central Pacific coast, based on the strength of the quake, the Associated Press reported.

Suicide rate rises in hot weather

The damp summer may have made us all miserable, but research suggests it is hot weather that really tips us over the edge.

A team from London's Institute of Psychiatry found that suicide rates go up during hot weather.

Analysis of more than 50,000 suicides in England and Wales between 1993 and 2003 showed the suicide rate rose when average daily temperatures topped 18C.

The study appears in the British Journal of Psychiatry.

The researchers found that once the daily average temperature rose above 18C each further degree increase was associated with a rise in suicides of almost 4%.

The rate in the rise of violent suicides was even higher, at 5% per degree rise in temperature.

Researcher Dr Lisa Page said there were a number of possible reasons for the link between hot weather and suicide.

She said: "We felt overall that the most likely explanation was probably a psychological one where for some people you have an unusually high degree of irritability, aggression and impulsivity."

TRENTON, N.J. — Wilting heat, deadly storms, flash floods, coastal erosion, more days with unhealthy air — those are just some of the effects of rising temperatures on the Northeast, a group of scientists reported Wednesday.

They urged governments and citizens to take steps now to avoid the most devastating consequences of global warming.

The Union of Concerned Scientists presented a report detailing the disastrous consequences of climate change on the economy, tourism industry, coastline and agricultural production in nine states.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) - Thousands of Argentines cheered and threw snowballs in the streets of Buenos Aires on Monday as the capital's first major snowfall since 1918 spread a thin white mantle across the region.

Wet snow fell for hours in the capital, accumulating in a mushy but thin white layer late Monday, after freezing air from the Antarctic collided with a moisture-laden low pressure system that blanketed higher elevations in western and central Argentina with snow.

Argentina's National Weather Service said it was the first major snow in Buenos Aires since June 22, 1918, though sleet or freezing rain have been periodically reported in decades since.

One man stripped to his shorts to welcome the snow. Children scraped snow of cars and threw snowballs. Motorists honked horns, some with small snowmen on their hoods. Some fender benders were reported on slick suburban streets.

Lt. Walter Haut was the public-relations officer at the base in 1947 and was the man who issued the original and subsequent press releases after the crash on the orders of the base commander, Col. William Blanchard.

Haut died in December 2005, but left a sworn affidavit to be opened only after his death.

Last week, the text was released. It asserts that the weather-balloon claim was a cover story and that the real object had been recovered by the military and stored in a hangar.

He described seeing not just the craft, but alien bodies.

He wasn't the first Roswell witness to talk about alien bodies.

Local undertaker Glenn Dennis had long claimed that he was contacted by authorities at Roswell shortly after the crash and asked to provide a number of child-sized coffins.

When he arrived at the base, he was apparently told by a nurse (who later disappeared) that a UFO had crashed and that small humanoid extraterrestrials had been recovered.

Heatwaves will boost death rate

The increasing number of deaths caused by heatwaves as the climate changes will not be offset by fewer deaths in milder winters, US research claims.

The study in Occupational and Environmental Medicine said the death rate in 50 US cities rose more sharply in very hot spells than very cold ones.

People had already adapted to the cold with central heating, the study said, but remained unused to intense heat.

Many more people currently die in cold weather conditions than hot ones.

In the UK for instance, there are 20,000 cold-related deaths each year and 1,000 heat-related.

Many experts believe we will see fewer deaths as a result of the milder winters climate change may bring, and that getting warmer is far preferable to getting colder.

The authors suggest that this is because the use of central heating is widespread, whereas fewer people have air conditioning in their homes.

Glacier Girl, buried in ice for decades, retries transatlantic flight

A fighter aircraft that spent decades buried in a glacier — earning the nickname Glacier Girl — has made its way back to the Labrador air base where its ill-fated mission began.

The P-38 Lightning was among a squadron that left Happy Valley-Goose Bay in 1942, headed for the war-torn skies of Europe.

The squadron never made it. Poor weather forced the pilots to crash-land in Greenland, and although the crews were rescued, the planes lay buried for decades in ice.

Glacier Girl was recovered during a lengthy operation in 1992. Last week, it lifted off from New Jersey to take a second run at the transatlantic crossing.

However — in an echo of its 1942 journey — poor weather has grounded the plane for a few days in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

An aging U.S. weather satellite crucial to accurate predictions on the intensity and path of hurricanes could fail at any moment and plans to launch a replacement have been pushed back seven years to 2016.

In a letter obtained by The Associated Press, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's chief said the failure of the QuikScat satellite could bring more uncertainty to forecasts and widen the areas that are placed under hurricane watches and warnings.

If the satellite faltered, experts estimate that the accuracy of two-day forecasts would suffer by 10 percent and three-day forecasts by 16 percent, which could translate into miles of coastline and the difference between a city being evacuated or not. The satellite covers about 90 percent of the globe's oceans, experts say.

"We would go blind. It would be significantly hazardous," said Wayne Sallade, emergency manager in Florida's Charlotte County, which was hit hard by Hurricane Charley in 2004.

Officials ordered thousands of people to evacuate low-lying areas along the Persian Gulf Tuesday in anticipation of the onslaught of the strongest cyclone to hit the Arabian Peninsula in 60 years.

Cyclone Gonu hit Oman's eastern coastal towns of Sur and Ra's Al-Hadd with wind speeds up to 106 miles and waves up to 12 yards high, according to the country's civil defense.

Gonu had weakened by midday to a Category Three-strength storm, was expected to make landfall in southern Iran, a region never hit by a storm of this magnitude, FOX News weather forecaster Janice Dean reported.

The cyclone was expected to skirt the region's biggest oil installations but could disrupt shipping through the Straits of Hormuz, causing a spike in prices, oil analysts said.

"If the storm hits Iran, it's a much bigger story than Oman, given how much bigger an oil producer Iran is," said Antoine Haff of FIMAT USA, a brokerage unit of Societe Generale.
