25 years murder-free in ‘Gun Town USA'

As the nation debates whether more guns or fewer can prevent tragedies like the Virginia Tech Shootings, a notable anniversary passed last month in a Georgia town that witnessed a dramatic plunge in crime and violence after mandating residents to own firearms.

In March 1982, 25 years ago, the small town of Kennesaw – responding to a handgun ban in Morton Grove, Ill. – unanimously passed an ordinance requiring each head of household to own and maintain a gun. Since then, despite dire predictions of “Wild West” showdowns and increased violence and accidents, not a single resident has been involved in a fatal shooting – as a victim, attacker or defender.

The crime rate initially plummeted for several years after the passage of the ordinance, with the 2005 per capita crime rate actually significantly lower than it was in 1981, the year before passage of the law.

The senior at the University of Utah gets dressed and then decides which gun is easiest to conceal under his clothes.

If he's wearing a T-shirt, he'll take a smaller, low-profile gun to class. If he's wearing a coat, he may carry a different weapon, he said.

He started carrying a gun to class after the massacre at Virginia Tech, but the student says he's not part of the problem of campus shootings and could instead be part of a solution.

Nick says his gun doesn't make him feel immune from attack. "But I feel that I will be able to protect myself, and I'm confident in my training and my ability," he said.

His confidence is not shared by fellow student Griselda Espinoza, who recently transferred to the university

"The only people that should carry guns are trained officials."

With all due respect to Kevin Smith, the web is no longer only for complaining about movies. In fact, there are a large number of very helpful sites that teach you how to do things. These are do-it-yourself sites, but we're not talking about building a deck or baking a cake -- the web is full of more general interest sites that give quality instruction on all sorts of fun and useful projects. Including, sometimes, how to build a deck or bake a cake.

In this horribly-titled, but hopefully useful round-up we will specifically focus on such general purpose sites that include some sort of rich media instruction (generally video). We also might throw in a tech-focused site or two, since this is after all, a tech-focused blog.

Blazingly fast Internet2 gets 10x boost,,,,I'll take that!

NEW YORK - The ultrahigh-speed Internet2 network just got 10 times faster, partly in anticipation of rising demand for capacity after the world's largest particle collider opens near Geneva next year.

Until recently, the Internet2 had a theoretical limit of 10 gigabits per second, which is thousands of times faster than standard home broadband connections. By sending data using 10 different colors, or wavelengths, of light over a single cable, operators are boosting the network's capacity to 100 Gbps.

That means a high-quality version of the movie "The Matrix" could be sent in a few seconds rather than half a minute over the old Internet2 and several hours over a typical home broadband line.

The new Internet2 network was largely completed in late August, and its operators this week made it possible for researchers to temporarily grab an entire 10 Gbps chunk for specific applications, so that they don't slow down normal Internet operations.

Isn't it typical? With technological advances forever endeavouring to send the human race skyward, it's always human error that brings us right back down to earth.

A man who joined Facebook to look at a friend's wedding photos was jailed after the social networking site sent an automatic "friend request" to his estranged wife. Dylan Osborn had been told by magistrates to stay away from his wife, after inundating her with phone calls and text messages. He was sentenced to ten days in prison for breaking his bail conditions

The Watercone is an ingenious device that can take salty water and turn it into fresh water using only the power of the sun. The nice thing about this device is it is bone simple, uses the sun instead of fossil fuel, and is cheap to make and easy to use.

The Watercone is surprisingly a cone, that you place over a pan of salty water (or over a marsh, or any damp ground) leave it out in the sun, water evaporates, the condensation trickles down the side of the cone, at the end of the day you flip it over, remove the cap at the top and drink the water.

The Japanese love technology so much that now even sex toys are on the cutting edge, according to a report from News.com.au.

The “gPod”, a phallic-shaped vibrator, is designed to respond automatically to sounds picked up by an accompanying handset, which can plug into anything from a telephone to a music player to a television.

The gPod, referred to as an "iVibrator," takes its name and description from Apple's wildly popular iPod. Apple, however, has no affiliation with the product.

An apple spokesman declined to comment on the new device.

The gPod, which retails for $243, was one of a number of toys that went on public view this week at Japan's first-ever sex toy expo in suburban Tokyo.

“You can use it in many ways, for example hooking it up to your mobile phone,” said Ichiro Kameda, the machine's inventor. “One of the ideas is that you can use it here in Tokyo when your boyfriend in New York is talking to you on the phone.”

Low-impact house takes the term 'treehouse' literally

Money doesn't grow on trees, but this house does. It's not really built, it's grown over five years, with its supporting trees trained to grow in the right direction with scaffolding holding it in place

After the shell of the house is grown in the right shape, the walls are filled in with mud and plaster, and then the insides of the house are constructed using conventional building materials. The only sticking point so far is the windows, and the designers are now experimenting with transparent plastic materials made of soy they hope will expand as the house's supporting trees grow. This modernized grass hut is bristling with green tech, run by solar power, and using a septic system that collects rainwater and then treats and recycles it.

Still in the concept phase, the design has no takers so far, but the architects say they're close to their first sale

OOOPS.......Apple iPhone can’t make or receive basic voice calls

Apple are facing a massive recall operation after it was revealed that after packing so much impressive technology into their new iPhone, they omitted to add a ‘phone’ function to the otherwise impressive gadget.

‘Sure, it’s a slip up all right, but not a huge one’ admitted Steve Jobs, ‘I guess that we got so carried away with the state-of-the-art software, functions and interface that we’ve forgot it was supposed to be a phone above all else.’

The problem has not affected a number of middle aged parents who have were persuaded to buy the device by their teenage children and will continue to use it mainly as a paperweight.

Hi, I'm Mitch Fincher and these pages are from a talk I gave while a Civil Engineering student at Texas Tech University.

The following is the basic pattern for building cantilevered structures with Pennies. Although it looks trivial, we can build amazing structures with these pillars. All penny columns are ten high, a "stack". Two side-by-side pennies held in place by a penny above them is called a "triad". Below is a stack with two triads resting on top.
