Drunk Referee Helped Off Field in Belarus

MINSK, Belarus — Referee Sergei Shmolik was helped off the field with back pain while officiating a Belarus league match, but later was shown to be drunk.

In TV footage shown Wednesday on Russian television, Shmolik staggered as he was helped off the field at the end of Saturday's match.

The Belarusian sports Web site Presball reported that the crowd in Vitebsk stadium, where the local team was hosting Naftan, was amused with the referee's strange behavior through the second half.

Shmolik was hardly moving by the end of the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, officiating from the central circle by the end of the game.

Presball said Shmolik got help after the match but later was taken to the hospital for a test, which showed high levels of alcohol in his system.

The Belarus football federation said Shmolik's case will be subject to a disciplinary committee.

Wisconsin cops bust high school party where kids were drinking root beer

WAUSAU, Wis. - Cars lining the street. A house full of young people. A keg and drinking games inside. Police in Wisconsin thought they had an underage boozing party on their hands.

But although they made dozens of teens take breath tests, none tested positive for alcohol.

That's because the keg contained root beer.

The party was held by a high school student who wanted to show that teens don't always drink alcohol at their parties.

It has gained fame on YouTube.com.

Dustin Zebro, 18, said he staged the party after friends at D.C. Everest High School got suspended from sports because of pictures showing them drinking from red cups.

The root-beer kegger was "to kind of make fun of the school," he said. "They assumed there was beer in the cups. We just wanted to have some root beer in red cups and just make it look like a party, but there actually wasn't any alcohol."

Priest sent off in unholy row

A footballing priest from Burkina Faso has been sent off in a church tournament for throwing his shirt at the referee in Italy.

The incident happened in the Clericus Cup over the weekend with the actions of the priest leading to Paul the Apostle's College being eliminated.

Italian sports officials had expressed hopes that the tournament held at the Vatican City will help restore a positive image of football in Italy, which has been marred by recent violence.

The Clericus Cup is an international football tournament including Catholic priests and seminarians.

There are 16 teams made up of the various catholic colleges and church congregations in Vatican City.

There is also a team made up of the Pope's bodyguards, the Swiss guards.

As you scream for your favorite sports team, special brain cells kick in to protect your auditory system from the sound of your own voice, a new study suggests.

These cells dampen your auditory neurons' ability to detect incoming sounds. The moment you shut up, the inhibition signal stops and your hearing returns to normal, so you can then be deafened by the screams of the guy next to you.

Scientists call this signal a corollary discharge. In crickets, on which the study was done, it's sent from the motor neurons responsible for generating loud mating calls to sensory neurons involved in hearing. The signal is sent via middlemen called interneurons.

Biologists have long known that corollary discharge interneurons, or CDIs, must exist. Only in recent years, however, have they started finding them. The new cricket study is the first to pinpoint CDIs for the auditory system.

Police investigating hockey brawl between 8-year-old players

Police say criminal charges could be laid following a weekend bench-clearing hockey brawl between two teams of eight-year-old players.

The Ontario Minor Hockey Association is also investigating the incident, which occurred between the Duffield Devils and Niagara Falls Thunder novice AAA teams, and has so far led to the suspension of three players from each team and their coaches.

The Niagara Falls Thunder have a tape of the incident but won't release it.

But police have a copy and allege that one of the Niagara coaches spat on a Duffield coach and that both coaches sent most of their players from the bench on to the ice

Welsh said the footage catches a Duffield coach slipping and falling as he leaves the bench, followed by one of the kids, who also fell. The images then show physical pushing and shoving between the two coaches, she said.

Police had to be called in.

The fastest driver ever caught in a routine speed check in the UK has been sentenced to 10 weeks in jail.

Timothy Brady, 33, of Earls Crescent, Harrow, north-west London, pleaded guilty at Oxford Crown Court to dangerous driving.

Brady was clocked at 172mph in a Porsche 911 Turbo in a 70mph zone on the A420 in Oxfordshire on 27 January.

He was banned from driving for three years and will have to take an extended driving test to get another licence.

He denied another charge of aggravated vehicle taking.

The court heard Brady had taken the Porsche from luxury car hire firm Helphire, where he worked as a delivery driver.

He had nagged his boss to let him drive the sports car and had been repeatedly told no, but the court heard Brady took the car out the next day.

Judge David Morton Jack said to Brady in court: "Your driving was criminally self-indulgent and utterly thoughtless of the danger you might be creating for the innocent."

Yankees rookie Shelley Duncan may be a hit on the field, but the family of a 10-year-old Boston Red Sox fan says the slugger has struck out following a “joke” autograph, the Boston Herald reported.

According to young Red Sox fan Griffin Whitman, Duncan wrote “Red Sox Suck! Shelley Duncan” in his notebook during an autograph session before last Friday’s game between the two fierce rivals at Boston’s Fenway Park.

“It was cool to get his autograph,” Griffin told the Herald. “It didn’t make me feel happy when he wrote that.”

Duncan later tolk the Herald he was surprised that the boy and his family took offense to the autograph.

“I thought I was back in middle school or high school, where you try to make a joke or say something funny, and you end up saying something that gets you in trouble,” Duncan said. “I try to be interactive with people, be funny, have a good time and have a laugh.”

THESE pensioners are livening up their retirement home — by competing with each other on the Nan-tendo Wii.

Residents as old as 103 have ditched knitting and bridge after getting hooked on the console.

Barrie Edgar, 88, said: “It’s great fun. We’ve only had it a few days but we can’t put it down.”

Jayne Naylor, director of the Sunrise Home in Birmingham, said it took off after a chef brought in one of the motion-sensitive consoles which mimic sports like tennis, bowling, and boxing.

Jayne, who is now organising leagues, said: “It’s captured everyone’s imagination.

“Most residents are in their 80s and 90s.

“Things have got quite competitive.”

In April of 2000, the FBI announced that 26 Southern Californians had been indicted in what the law enforcement agency called the largest, most lucrative, and most brazen fraud ring ever busted for trafficking in phony sports and celebrity autographs and memorabilia. In a case dubbed “Operation Bullpen,” the FBI seized merchandise in California, Nevada, and other states that was designed to be sold for ten million dollars, including forged autographs of Marilyn Monroe, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, the Marx Brothers, and Albert Einstein. The operation even produced a box of one dozen baseballs bearing the signature of Mother Teresa.

“Operation Bullpen” involved undercover informants, a dummy company, wiretaps, and sixty search warrants. In just one month, the ring provided phony signatures on more than 10,000 baseballs.

TOKYO (AP) - Talk about an image problem.

The TV shows have had a field day, parading out psychiatrists, trainers, mavens, pop stars - anyone who might want to offer a comment, and that's pretty much anyone in Japan these days.

Shunned for ditching an official appearance, sumo Grand Champion Asashoryu, hitherto the toughest guy in Japan's toughest sport, is reportedly on the brink of a nervous breakdown, holed up in his apartment fighting back tears and begging he be allowed to go home to his native Mongolia.

Never mind political scandal or stock market jitters, the bad boy Mongolian's meltdown is the biggest story in Japan this summer.

For sports fans, it's bigger than Bonds, bigger than Beijing.

There are very few titles as lofty, or taken more seriously by the Japanese, as grand champion.

Psychiatrist Masaki Honda examined him and said the wrestler was depressed and could be on the brink of a nervous breakdown due to a shock from the punishment.

Beyond his alleged steroid use, Barry Bonds is guilty of the use of something that confers extraordinarily unfair mechanical advantage: the “armor” that he wears on his right elbow. Amid the press frenzy over Bonds’ unnatural bulk, the true role of the object on his right arm has simply gone unnoticed.

This is unfortunate, because by my estimate, Bonds’ front arm “armor” may have contributed no fewer than 75 to 100 home runs to his already steroid-questionable total.

For years, sportswriters remarked that his massive "protective" gear – unequaled in all of baseball -- permits Bonds to lean over the plate without fear of being hit by a pitch. Thus situated, Bonds can handle the outside pitch (where most pitchers live) unusually well

The other six:

1) The apparatus is hinged at the elbow.

2) The apparatus locks at the elbow when the lead arm is fully elongated

3) When Bonds swings, the weight of the apparatus helps to seal his inner upper arm to his torso at impact.

Chilean soccer team involved in melee with police

At least half a dozen players from Chile's under-20 soccer team were handcuffed and taken back into BMO Field in Toronto Thursday night following a melee with police.

The commotion started as Chilean players were about to greet fans after their 3-0 defeat against Argentina in the semifinal match of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

Police prevented the players from reaching the large fence that separated them from their fans.

As pushing and shoving began, a Chilean official said police used pepper spay and a Taser gun to subdue the players and some other members of the nation's soccer delegation.

A FIFA spokesman said early Friday that police made no arrests, but the entire Chilean team was detained at the stadium after the incident.

"It looked like a big dogfight. People throwing fists and cops with their billy clubs out and then all of a sudden it got out of control

James Dean's car curse

In September 1955, James Dean was killed in a horrific car accident whilst he was driving his Porsche sports car. After the crash the car was seen as very unlucky.
a) When the car was towed away from accident scene and taken to a garage, the engine slipped out and fell onto a mechanic, shattering both of his legs.
b) Eventually the engine was bought by a doctor, who put it into his racing car and was killed shortly afterwards, during a race. Another racing driver, in the same race, was killed in his car, which had James Dean's driveshaft fitted to it.
c) When James Dean's Porsche was later repaired, the garage it was in was destroyed by fire.
d) Later the car was displayed in Sacramento, but it fell off it's mount and broke a teenager's hip.
e) In Oregon, the trailer that the car was mounted on slipped from it's towbar and smashed through the front of a shop.

f) Finally, in 1959, the car mysteriously broke into 11 pieces while it was sitting on steel supports.
