A U.S. study suggests having a cat at home could cut your risk of a heart attack by almost a third.

The finding suggests that the stress relief pets provide to humans is heart-healthy.

Researchers analyzed data on more than 4,400 Americans, age 30 to 75, who took part in the U.S. government's second National Health and Nutrition Examination Study, which ran from 1976 to 1980.

A little more than half of the study participants either owned a cat or had owned a cat in the past while the rest had never done so.

Researchers tracked the rates of death in the entire group from all causes, including heart and stroke.

The cat owners had a 30 per cent reduction in heart attack risk than participants who didn't own cats, said the study's lead author, Dr. Adnan Qureshi of the Minnesota Stroke Institute.

Dogs would probably bring people the same kind of benefit, Qureshi said, but the numbers of dog owners in the study wasn't big enough to count statistically.

The Internet is literally going to the dogs -- and cats -- thanks to a father and son team from Toronto who have created a social networking site for canines and felines.

Geoffrey Roche and his son, Alexandre, came up with the idea for cat and dog social networking sites in the wake of the success of Facebook, a similar site catering only to people.

Dogbook and Catbook are, as their website names suggest, exclusively the domain of pets. Pets can swap pictures and even messages -- with the help of their owners, of course. They can list their favourite treats and even arrange meetings at local parks.

Annabelle is a Toronto mutt whose mug has been unleashed on the Internet. Her web profile says she likes to run, jump, and eat steak.

She has 58 online friends, including Lou Lou, a Jack Russell terrier from Quebec, and a cat from California name Bootsy.

In just six months, Dogbook and Catbook have signed up more than 500,000 cats and more than one million dogs

Sweet William, a young black Labrador retriever in Illinois, has two days to live.

Sandy, a golden female Jindo in New York, also has just two days left. Kate Hepburn, a tan female boxer in California, has 18 days to live.

On Saturday, these were some of the dogs in shelters across the country slated for death -- their fate posted on a website that aims to save their lives by offering them for adoption.

Each is tagged with a death date set by a shelter -- and a countdown clock showing the days, or hours, until the animal is destroyed.

Dogsindanger.com works with more than 120 shelters countrywide that destroy dogs. How much time the dogs get before death varies from state to state. If the dog is found on the street, it must be kept a minimum number of days, while animals abandoned at a shelter by their owners can often be put to death immediately.

About four million dogs are put to death each year in the United States, by injection or gas.

Golden Retriever Nurses Stray Kitten

STEPHENS CITY, Va — A golden retriever is nursing a stray kitten — literally.

The dog, which belongs to a Stephens City family, began producing milk for the little feline after hearing its cries.

Honey hadn't given birth in 18 months, but found herself playing mom after her owner, Jimmy Martin, brought home the kitten.

Martin noticed the kitten, whom the family dubbed "Precious," about six weeks ago, when she ran in front of his concrete truck. He took her home after following her and realizing there was no mother cat in sight.

The kitten refused to drink from a bottle, and Jimmy's family feared Precious would die.

Eventually, the family let Honey approach Precious, and the dog immediately took to her and began nursing the kitten.

The Martins said they told a veterinarian about Honey and Precious, and learned that interspecies nursing does happen on rare occasion.

Martin's wife Kathy says the kitten "thinks she's a dog."

NEW YORK — A black Labrador who became a national canine hero after burrowing through white-hot, smoking debris in search of survivors at the World Trade Center site died Wednesday after a battle with cancer.

Owner Mary Flood had Jake put to sleep Wednesday after a last stroll through the fields and a dip in the creek near their home in Oakley, Utah. He was in too much pain at the end, shaking with a 105-degree fever as he lay on the lawn.

No one can say whether the dog would have gotten sick if he hadn't been exposed to the smoky air at Ground Zero, but cancer in dogs Jake's age — he was 12 — is quite common.

Flood had adopted Jake as a 10-month-old disabled puppy — abandoned on a street with a broken leg and a dislocated hip.

"But against all odds he became a world-class rescue dog," said Flood, a member of Utah Task Force 1, one of eight federal search-and-rescue teams that desperately looked for human remains at ground zero.

SYDNEY, Australia — A dog that vanished two months ago has been found 2,000 miles from home, media reported Wednesday.

Rusty was to be flown home Thursday after being sent to a pound in Darwin, Australia's northernmost city, and identified this week by a microchip inserted under the skin.

"I can't believe I'll see my little fellow again," Shirley Lowry, who has made several appeals in local media for her pet's return, told Australian Associated Press.

"It just goes to show the value of having your dog micro-chipped," she added.

How Rusty, an 8-year-old poodle-Maltese mix, reached tropical Darwin remains a mystery, although the condition of Rusty's paws suggests the dog did not walk.

Rusty disappeared in May while Lowry was inside a shop in the east coast town of Woy Woy, 25 miles north of Sydney.

MASONVILLE, Colo. — Zoey is a Chihuahua, but when a rattlesnake lunged at her owners' 1-year-old grandson, she was a real bulldog.

Booker West was splashing his hands in a birdbath in his grandparents' northern Colorado back yard when the snake slithered up to the toddler, rattled and struck. Five-pound Zoey jumped in the way and took the bites.

"She got in between Booker and the snake, and that's when I heard her yipe," said Monty Long, the boy's grandfather.

The dog required treatment and for a time it appeared she might not survive. Now she prances about.

"These little bitty dogs, they just don't really get credit," Booker's grandma Denise Long told the Loveland Daily Reporter-Herald.

Forty-five years and five hours ago, the first Earthling broke through the atmosphere and into space. It wasn't a man, a woman or even a monkey; it was stray dog.

That much is public knowledge, but a secret that has been kept for 45 years was just released last week at the World Space Congress in Houston. "Laika", the first astronaut of the planet Earth, died of fright just after take-off.

Russian authorities had previously circulated reports that Laika survived in orbit for four days and then died when the cabin overheated due to a battery malfunction.

In reality, medical sensors recorded that immediately after the launch, as her capsule reached speeds of nearly 18,000 miles per hour (28,800km/h), her pulse rate increased to three times its normal level, presumably due to overheating, fear and stress. Five to seven hours into the flight, no further life signs were received from Laika.

Thousands of Japanese have been swindled in a scam in which they were sold Australian and British sheep and told they were poodles.

Flocks of sheep were imported to Japan and then sold by a company called Poodles as Pets, marketed as fashionable accessories, available at $1,600 each.

That is a snip compared to a real poodle which retails for twice that much in Japan.

The scam was uncovered when Japanese moviestar Maiko Kawamaki went on a talk-show and wondered why her new pet would not bark or eat dog food.

She was crestfallen when told it was a sheep.

Then hundreds of other women got in touch with police to say they feared their new "poodle" was also a sheep.

One couple said they became suspicious when they took their "dog" to have its claws trimmed and were told it had hooves.

Japanese police believe there could be 2,000 people affected by the scam, which operated in Sapporo and capitalised on the fact that sheep are rare in Japan, so many do not know what they look like.

Dog Prozac now available for stressed-out pooches

Nearly 10 million canines are said to suffer anxiety when separated from their owners, but the company that manufactures Prozac is offering relief to both the dogs and their owners.

Eli Lily and Co. launched Reconcile, its first prescription medication for dogs, in the United States on Friday.

In combination with behaviour management, the medication is said calm canines that bark, whine and destroy when their owners are out of sight.

"It basically calms the dog and makes it more receptive to the training that's supposed to go along with it," said Steve Connell, a Lilly veterinarian.

Separation anxiety is said to affect at least one in every six canines.

Symptoms include:

Yawning and
Urination, defecation or vomiting
