'The Grid' Could Soon Make the Internet Obsolete

The Internet could soon be made obsolete. The scientists who pioneered it have now built a lightning-fast replacement capable of downloading entire feature films within seconds.

At speeds about 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection, “the grid” will be able to send the entire Rolling Stones back catalogue from Britain to Japan in less than two seconds.

The latest spin-off from Cern, the particle physics centre that created the web, the grid could also provide the kind of power needed to transmit holographic images; allow instant online gaming with hundreds of thousands of players; and offer high-definition video telephony for the price of a local call.

David Britton, professor of physics at Glasgow University and a leading figure in the grid project, believes grid technologies could “revolutionise” society. “With this kind of computing power, future generations will have the ability to collaborate and communicate in ways older people like me cannot even imagine,” he said.

Microsoft to launch new web browser

Microsoft Corp. gave early testers their first glimpse of its next-generation Web browser Wednesday, and said Internet Explorer 8 will adhere to the same standards as competitors' programs.

Microsoft's browsers, including the current Internet Explorer 7, gained notoriety among Web developers for handling Web page code differently than Mozilla Corp.'s Firefox, Apple Inc.'s Safari, the now-defunct Netscape Navigator and others.

Microsoft said the new version of the browser, when complete, will support industry-standard versions of the code that tells browsers what Web pages should look like, including CSS 2.1, by default.

"That's a big deal," said Chris Swenson, a software industry analyst for the NPD Group.

While most Web surfers might not feel a huge impact, Swenson said it will bring "a sigh of relief" for developers, who will spend a lot less time tweaking Web pages to work with different browsers.

The Internet is literally going to the dogs -- and cats -- thanks to a father and son team from Toronto who have created a social networking site for canines and felines.

Geoffrey Roche and his son, Alexandre, came up with the idea for cat and dog social networking sites in the wake of the success of Facebook, a similar site catering only to people.

Dogbook and Catbook are, as their website names suggest, exclusively the domain of pets. Pets can swap pictures and even messages -- with the help of their owners, of course. They can list their favourite treats and even arrange meetings at local parks.

Annabelle is a Toronto mutt whose mug has been unleashed on the Internet. Her web profile says she likes to run, jump, and eat steak.

She has 58 online friends, including Lou Lou, a Jack Russell terrier from Quebec, and a cat from California name Bootsy.

Quebec man to donate $3,550 he earned selling snowbank over the Internet

MONTREAL - A Quebec man who put his snowbank up for auction on the Internet has unloaded the frosty heap for $3,550.

Michel Levesque of Saint-Eustache, a town north of Montreal, initially posted the snowbank on the Internet auction site EBay as a joke.

But since the pile was posted on Dec. 21, the prank snowballed.

Levesque says he is donating his earnings to a local youth organization.

The father of two still doesn't know if the Quebec resident who placed the winning bid is coming to claim the pile of snow.

The Montreal area was pounded by two snowstorms in recent weeks, which helped build the imposing mound on Levesque's front yard.

Youth Hockey Coach Among 22 Arrested in Sex Offender Sting

BARTOW, Fla. — Twenty-two men were arrested and charged with soliciting sex from a minor over the Internet during a four-day undercover operation, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said Monday.

The men included a volunteer youth hockey coach, an airport security screener and a volunteer firefighter. They ranged in age from men in their early 20s to a 60-year-old man who is a registered sex offender in Ohio

Investigators used Internet chat rooms and instant messaging to direct the men to a suburban home west of Orlando, where they believed they were meeting a teenage girl to have sex, the sheriff's office said in a news release.

The sting began Thursday. Each of the 22 men arrested face multiple charges.

"It's disappointing to know that we have arrested child predators who come from public service industries," Sheriff Grad Judd said in a statement. "This reconfirms our dedication to our number one cause, and that's keeping children safe."

Surfing to be edited in next Webster dictionary

If you look up surfing in a dictionary or on dictionary.com you will find "the act or sport of riding the surf, as on a surfboard", or something along those lines.

The popularity of the Internet and its users are showing the power this network has created. 'Geeks' are the new breed and are a force to be reckoned with.

Such is their influence that they have officially been able to make a new definition for an established word which is totally different to the original.

From tomorrow 'Surfing' will officially be defined as; using a Web Browser to navigate the Internet.

Internet expert Rob Cannell when asked his veiws on the matter stated that he was unaware that there was actually a sport named surfing. "Why would anyone go 'surfing', it sounds lame. Its outside and stuff. Noobs."

Researchers: Scrap the Internet and Start Over

Although it has already taken nearly four decades to get this far in building the Internet, some university researchers with the federal government's blessing want to scrap all that and start over.

The idea may seem unthinkable, even absurd, but many believe a "clean slate" approach is the only way to truly address security, mobility and other challenges that have cropped up since UCLA professor Leonard Kleinrock helped supervise the first exchange of meaningless test data between two machines on Sept. 2, 1969.

The Internet "works well in many situations but was designed for completely different assumptions," said Dipankar Raychaudhuri, a Rutgers University professor overseeing three clean-slate projects. "It's sort of a miracle that it continues to work well today."

No longer constrained by slow connections and computer processors and high costs for storage, researchers say the time has come to rethink the Internet's underlying architecture

Presiding over a company with a market value of US$143 billion apparently gives Silicon Valley's most famous billionaires a good sense of humour - and a case of corporate potty mouth.

Senior executives at Google Inc. launched their annual April Fools' Day prank Sunday, posting a link on the company's home page to a site offering consumers free high-speed wireless Internet through their home plumbing systems.

Code-named "Dark Porcelain," Google said its "Toilet Internet Service Provider" (TiSP) works with Microsoft Corp.'s new Windows Vista operating system. But sorry - septic tanks are incompatible with the system's requirements.

Mourners bid farewell on internet

A Northern Ireland undertaker has begun broadcasting funerals live on the internet.

In what is thought to be a UK first, the County Down firm says the move allows mourners from across the world to watch the funeral service of friends and loved ones.

S Clarke and Son Funeral Directors said people now living in Africa, New Zealand, Spain, Australia and Canada had been able to see services taking place in Newtownards and Bangor.

The idea was the brainchild of Jim Clarke, who runs the undertaker business with his father John - who has just completed a computer course aged 80.

"Life moves fast - we're just trying to adapt to the changing needs of our world," said Jim.

"There are families living abroad who can't afford to fly to funerals, or people who are too sick to go, or busy people who can't get the time off work.

"Our internet option means they get to become part of a grieving process they might have missed out on."
