The bridge is part of a glacier, that has been known to collapse in summer, and refreeze in winter. Now it is collapsing in what is the middle of the southern hemispheres winter.

Some Argentines are taking a break from the farm strikes, export taxes and presidential couple that have dominated the headlines for nearly four months.

They're focusing instead on something a little more harmless and just plain cooler – the imminent collapse of an ice bridge connecting the giant Perito Moreno glacier in Patagonian Argentina to the Magellan Peninsula.

This kind of massive ice collapse usually happens in the warm summer months and not in the thick of winter like it is down here now south of the equator. Thousands of visitors are flocking to the scene to try and catch the massive crack and plunge of the collapse.

This time, though, we’re talking about untold tons of ice weakened by a fissure several stories tall that’s formed beneath it. The plunge should be monumental. You can watch the glacier minute by minute by live Webcam although the site was jammed yesterday afternoon because of an overflow of traffic.

Phil Bridge, a 21-year-old university student in the UK, has designed a cardboard bicycle that cost around $30 to make:

Supporting anyone up to 168 pounds, the frame, which costs around $6 to make, is made from the cardboard used in industrial packaging, whilst the wheels and chain are standard bike issue, and will cost around $24.

Phil Bridge, who is studying Industrial Design, came up with the idea as he was researching reasons why people don’t use pedal power to get around town. "A typical round town bike can cost several hundred pounds," says Mr Bridge. "That’s a large investment for people who aren’t sure whether they will use it. The idea of cardboard is to completely devalue the bike".
