Official: Coulthard announces retirement from F1

Speaking at Silverstone today, ahead of this weekend's British Grand Prix, Scottish veteran David Coulthard has announced his retirement from F1 at the end of the season.

"I would like to announce today my decision to retire from racing in Formula One at the end of this season," said the Scot. "I will remain actively involved in the sport as a consultant to Red Bull Racing focusing on testing and development of the cars."

While he is closing the door on F1, Coulthard insists that he is not hanging up his helmet, and will continue to race, though he has yet to announce any specific details.

It was June 2007 in sleepy Surrey County, and Coughlan, a statuesque blonde, sauntered through the door of the shop holding a sheaf of 780 pages. Scan them onto two CDs, she told the clerk, a forgettable middle-aged guy in a forgettable office park in the middle of nowhere. Nothing strange about the order, unless you happened to be a Formula One fan and happened to take a close look at the material: schematic drawings, technical reports, pictures, and financial information — enough insider dope to design a Formula One race car. Each page was emblazoned with one of the most famous logos in the world: the prancing black horse of Ferrari.

Thus began the biggest scandal ever to rock the world of Formula One racing.

Anil Kumble, India's Test captain, has firmly backed Rahul Dravid, the captain of the Bangalore Royal Challengers, and said it was time "people who matter" understand what sport is all about. Kumble's statement comes in wake of the comments made by franchise owner Vijay Mallya, who defended his decision to sack Charu Sharma, the chief executive, and also said his biggest mistake was to trust Dravid on matters of team selection.

"As I have said all along, Kimi deserved to win the 2007 World Drivers’ Championship, and neither I nor anyone at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes had any desire to take it off him in court. That was not the purpose of the team’s appeal.
