It's nearly 40 years old but one leading research company says the days of the computer mouse are numbered.

A Gartner analyst predicts the demise of the computer mouse in the next three to five years.

"The mouse works fine in the desktop environment but for home entertainment or working on a notebook it's over," declared analyst Steve Prentice.

He told BBC News that his prediction is driven by the efforts of consumer electronics firm which are making products with new interactive interfaces inspired by the world of gaming .

"You've got Panasonic showing forward facing video in the home entertainment environment. Instead of using a conventional remote control you hold up your hand and it recognises you have done that," he said.

"It also recognises your face and that you are you and it will display on your TV screen your menu. You can move your hand to move around and select what you want," he added.

"This" Mr Prentice said, "is all about using computer power to do things smarter."

The English language is confusing, packed with inconsistencies and exceptions that anyone who's learning the language for the first time will be quick to point out. There are so many ways to write out a single sound that theoretically, you could pronounce the word "ghoti" as "fish" (if you pronounce the gh as in tough, the o as in women and the ti as in nation).^[1] If you're struggling to get a grasp on those silent vowels, confusing consonants, and crazy pronunciations, here's how you can improve.

Learn spelling rules.

Identify problematic words.

Sound it out.

Watch out for homonyms and homophones.

Be familiar with "piggyback pairs". It's not uncommon for pairs of consonants to be pronounced so that one is silent and figuratively "piggybacks" on the sound of the other. Make note of the following:

Use mnemonics.

Practice.

Copyedit someone else's work.

Watch out for the "grocer's apostrophe."

One of the most basic tenets of Web 2.0 has been this idea that everything can and should be free for everyone on the Web to use because whatever inherent costs incurred by a service can be paid for by advertising; or in some cases it would seem - by VC dollars.

We all seem to have this belief that for the price of looking and clicking on ads that this entitles us to have our data stored by these services forever without paying a cent. While we might think that this is feasible on the Web, we would never think of going to our local storage company and expect them to give us a free storage unit to keep our junk in forever. Whether the storage is by the square foot or by the megabytes the fact is that storage costs money.

Google has just launched Lively, a new social network built around the concept of each user creating an avatar and a personal virtual room that can be embedded anywhere on the Web. In essence, Google is looking to create a massive distributed virtual world, where every Google account can have its own avatar that can be used wherever a Lively virtual room is present – for example, on a blog, a social networking profile, or a Web page.

Is This Google’s New Social Networking Strategy?

Wang tells me that Lively came about during Google’s famous “20 percent time,” where engineers devote 1/5th of their time to their own ideas and projects. But, it’s safe to say that this project may turn into much more. Tying an avatar to your Google account that can be used anywhere there is a Lively room is a unique idea that takes advantage of Google’s huge userbase.

The bridge is part of a glacier, that has been known to collapse in summer, and refreeze in winter. Now it is collapsing in what is the middle of the southern hemispheres winter.
There is a link in the clip to live footage of the bridge. The site with the video is in spanish and the link in the article does not lead directly to the video, but there is the option to view the site in English

Some Argentines are taking a break from the farm strikes, export taxes and presidential couple that have dominated the headlines for nearly four months.

They're focusing instead on something a little more harmless and just plain cooler – the imminent collapse of an ice bridge connecting the giant Perito Moreno glacier in Patagonian Argentina to the Magellan Peninsula.

This kind of massive ice collapse usually happens in the warm summer months and not in the thick of winter like it is down here now south of the equator. Thousands of visitors are flocking to the scene to try and catch the massive crack and plunge of the collapse.

This time, though, we’re talking about untold tons of ice weakened by a fissure several stories tall that’s formed beneath it. The plunge should be monumental. You can watch the glacier minute by minute by live Webcam although the site was jammed yesterday afternoon because of an overflow of traffic.

4 Tablespoons cake flour
4 Tablespoons sugar
2 Tablespoons cocoa
1 Egg
3 Tablespoons milk
3 Tablespoons oil
1 Mug

Instructions:

Mix flour, sugar and cocoa:

Spoon in 1 egg

Pour in milk and oil, and mix well

Put in microwave for 3 minutes on maximum power (1000watt)

Wait until it stops rising and sets in the mug

Tip contents out of mug onto saucer and enjoy!

The FIA has this morning - opening day of the British GP weekend at Silverstone - made the following announcement:

Following discussions with Formula One Management, the FIA can confirm that the British Grand Prix will be retained on the Formula One World Championship calendar. From 2010 the new home of the British Grand Prix will be Donington Park.

"We wanted a world class venue for Formula One in Britain, something that the teams and British F1 fans could be proud of. The major development plans for Donington will give us exactly that. A venue that will put British motor sport back on the map."
