The content-discovery service, StumbleUpon, has gotten itself back to start-up status, after being bought by eBay two years ago.

It announced today that it was returning to being an “investor-backed startup” by a roster of well-known Silicon Valley investors, including Ram Shriram of Sherpalo Ventures, Accel Partners and August Capital.

This gives an idea of how determined Democrats were to ram through the obscene Porkzilla package before anyone could find out what was in it:

Democratic staffers released the final version of the stimulus bill at about 11 p.m. [Thursday] night after delaying the release for hours to put it into a format which people cannot "search" on their home computers.

Instead of publishing the bill as a regular internet document -- which people can search by "key words" and otherwise, the Dems took hours to convert the final bill from the regular searchable format into "pdf" files, which can be read but not searched.

Three of the four .pdf files had no text embedded, just images of the text, which did not permit text searches of the bill.

Dems knew that no one would have time to wade through over 1,000 pages of nearly unintelligible bureaucratese in time for the vote on Friday. They may as well have released the bill in Sanskrit.

Researchers have shown that the human brain — once thought to be a seriously flawed decision maker — is actually hard-wired to allow us to make the best decisions possible with the information we are given.

Contrary to Kahnneman and Tversky’s research, Alex Pouget, associate professor of brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Rochester, has shown that people do indeed make optimal decisions — but only when their unconscious brain makes the choice.

“A lot of the early work in this field was on conscious decisionmaking, but most of the decisions you make aren’t based on conscious reasoning,” says Pouget.

The most popular New Year’s goals people set, according to Miller and Marlatt (1998) are:

37% - Starting to exercise

13% - Eating better

7% - Reducing the consumption of alcohol, caffeine and other drugs, or quitting smoking

According to the same survey, most people — 75 percent — who make a resolution fail on their first attempt and most people — 67 percent — make more than one resolution.

As the researchers summarized, individuals with high self-efficacy attribute failure to insufficient effort, while individuals with low self-efficacy attribute failure to deficient ability. Higher self-efficacy generally is correlated with a greater likelihood of achieving one’s goals.

The investigators also found that if you are made to believe that self-control is a fixed or limited resource that you can’t change, you will also set fewer goals and will give up on them sooner, regardless of your level of self-efficacy.

But when his caddie later announced he’d found the ball 300 yards from the tee (300 yards!), he celebrated as if he had won a medal.

I nodded. If the thing was to be done at all, it was unquestionably a niblick shot.

Fact Number One: It was liberal Democrats, led by Sen. Christopher Dodd and Congressman Barney Frank, who for years — including the present year — denied that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were taking big risks that could lead to a financial crisis.

Yet, today, what are we hearing? That it was the Bush administration “right-wing ideology” of “de-regulation” that set the stage for the financial crisis. Do facts matter?
