Meet John Kennedy

Earlier today, I had the chance to interview Louisiana state treasurer -- and current U.S. Senate candidate -- John Kennedy.

This was his first major interview with a blogger since becoming a candidate for the U.S. Senate.

As the presumed Republican nominee, Kennedy's campaign to oust incumbent Sen. Mary Landrieu is viewed as the only realistic chance Republicans have to take a Democratic seat this fall (check out the latest on Ladrieu's ties to Jack Abramoff).

One thing is abundantly clear: Kennedy isn't running for Congress -- he's running against Congress. A conservative reformer bent on changing things (not a bad strategy considering the toxic political atmosphere out there), Kennedy hopes to tap into some of anger voters currently have regarding all things Washington.

ABRAMOFF, ETHICS LIKELY FACTOR IN LANDRIEU RE-ELECTION BID

THE DEAD PELICAN expects the U.S. Senate contest between State Treasurer John Kennedy and U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu to be heated. One issue that is expected to gain traction is the Landrieu connection to Jack Abramoff, former lobbyist and convicted felon.

Landrieu will likely face some difficult questions in the upcoming race on this issue.

Landrieu claims she never took money from Abramoff - even though records indicate money she received went through him. There are also questions about Landrieu hiring a former Abramoff staffer that was instrumental in funneling Abramoff's money- an ethically suspect move during a reelection campaign. Details below.

Lunsford's $ for McConnell

It's one of the oddities of Kentucky's U.S. Senate race that the leading Democratic challenger, W. Bruce Lunsford, has made campaign donations to the man he seeks to replace -- Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell.

Massachusetts Senate candidate Jim Ogonowski has created a clever web ad called: "Where's John Kerry?" It's well done -- though it reminds me a bit of the classic Paul Wellstone ad, "Where's Rudy?"
