Nurse gets life for killing 10 she found too demanding

SAN ANGELO, Texas -- A former nurse was sentenced Thursday to life in prison on charges she killed 10 hospital patients with drug injections because she found them too demanding.

Vickie Dawn Jackson, 40, pleaded no contest on Wednesday and was sentenced after prosecutors presented their evidence to a judge.

Investigators say Jackson injected the patients through intravenous lines with a drug normally used to temporarily stop breathing when doctors insert a breathing tube.

FBI agent David Burns testified that the patients had been hospitalized for minor ailments -- such as a foot sore, diarrhea or dementia -- and were about to be released.

''In general, they were the kind of patients who needed more care,'' Burns said at the sentencing. ''They're verbose. They want this. They're thirsty. It seemed to make her angry.''

Authorities became suspicious after nearly two dozen deaths were reported at Nocona General Hospital in late 2000 and early 2001, a stretch of time when the hospital should have seen only five to 10 deaths.

LONDON (Reuters) - Jack Neal briefly became the proud owner of a pink convertible car after he managed to buy it for 9,000 pounds ($17,000) on the Internet despite being only three years old.

Jack's mother told the BBC she had left her password for the eBay auction site in her computer and her son used the "buy it now" option to complete the purchase.

"Jack's a whizz on the PC and just pressed all the right buttons," Rachel Neal said.

The seller of the second-hand car, a dealer from Worcestershire, central England, was amused by the bid and agreed not to force the sale through.

"Luckily he saw the funny side and said he would re-advertise," Neal said.

LONDON Sep 24, 2006 (AP)— The singer formerly known as Cat Stevens, who converted to Islam and changed his name to Yusuf Islam, joined the furor over Pope Benedict XVI's recent comments about Islam by criticizing the pontiff on Sunday.

In 2004, after flying to the United States from London, the singer was barred from entering the country after U.S. security officials said his name was on list of banned individuals.

When she returned, Dejesus vomited in the bucket next to the bed where she fell asleep with her daughter, Niah Ford, in her arms, police said.

NEW YORK Sep 22, 2006 (AP)— A 3-month-old infant fell off a bed into a bucket of her teenage mother's vomit and died, said police, who charged the woman with negligent homicide on Thursday.

The infant later tumbled into the bucket and apparently drowned, police said. Dejesus didn't discover what had happened to her baby until the next afternoon.

U.S. 30 drive-by flasher arrested

MERRILLVILLE — A man arrested a month ago for flashing naked pictures of himself at motorists on U.S. 30 is again in police custody, this time for resisting an officer in a bizarre confrontation police say could have turned deadly.

A neighbor called police to complain that Young had been sitting with his ear pressed against the door of their apartment. When Officer Anthony Konvalinka approached Young outside the apartment, he ran toward another apartment.

The officer found a bottle of air freshener and a folding knife in Young’s pocket. Inside the apartment, police found three .375-caliber Magnum handguns, nearly 750 rounds of ammunition, and a sleeping bag and pillow.

The apartment was leased to Young’s mother, who said her son suffers from paranoia and delusional behavior. She also said that in moments of intense excitement, he would pass out.

Young was arrested nearly a month ago by Schererville police on charges of distributing pornographic material after several female motorists on U.S. 30 and Cline Avenue reported Young had driven alongside them and pressed naked photographs of himself against the windows.

When he drove off, victims were able to read the names of several Web sites where visitors could view more naked pictures of Young and rank his attractiveness against that of other posters.

N.H. Woman Bakes Cookies on Dashboard

BEDFORD, N.H. - Blistering heat was just what Sandi Fontaine needed to bake cookies for her co-workers - on the dash of her Toyota Rav4.

With temperatures soaring Wednesday, Fontaine placed two trays of cookie dough on the dashboard, shut the doors and retreated inside to her air conditioned office.

Fontaine first tested her dashboard oven three years ago. She said anyone can do it; the only requirement is for the outside temperature to be at least 95 degrees, so it will rise to about 200 degrees in the car. Temperatures in the area reached the mid to upper 90s on Wednesday.

Pink Floyd co-founder Syd Barrett has died, a spokeswoman for the band said Tuesday. He was 60.

Born in Cambridge as Roger Keith Barrett (he acquired the nickname Syd at 15), Barrett, a guitarist, wrote many of Pink Floyd's early songs and launched the group in 1965, along with Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Rick Wright. Their first hit album was 1967's The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, which perfectly underscored the British capital's drug-infused pop scene.

Barrett's own LSD use further exacerbated his mental instability, and he eventually split from the band in 1968 – five years before the release of Pink Floyd's most popular album, Dark Side of the Moon. His replacement was David Gilmour.

Locked in a struggle, the victim and Rojas fell to the ground. The victim then hit Rojas with an onion and was able to escape. According to the report, she left the kitchen area crying, breathing hard and covered in salsa.

'Screech' Hopes To Be Saved By The T-Shirt

(AP) MILWAUKEE More than a bell is needed to save Dustin Diamond this time around. Diamond, best known as geeky Screech Powers on the 1989-1993 teen comedy series "Saved by the Bell," is selling T-shirts with his photo on them to try to raise $250,000 so he doesn't lose his gray two-story house under a foreclosure order.

Diamond, 29, is trying to sell nearly 30,000 shirts — at $15 or $20 (autographed) each — to supplement the income he makes as a standup comic so he doesn't have to move from his Port Washington home, about 25 miles north of Milwaukee.

Dustin Diamond, aka Screech Powers from the TV series "Saved by the Bell," is selling T-shirts from his Web site to raise $250,000 so he doesn't lose his house under a foreclosure order.

While Congress is still sorting out a new federal law that will make it clear that playing online poker is a crime, it appears the state of Washington couldn't wait that long. Digg points out that if you're an online poker player in the state of Washington, you're now a felon (congrats!). Of course, like the federal attempts, the state government claims this isn't really a change, but simply a clarification. Some politicians have claimed from the beginning that playing poker online is illegal based on current laws -- but the laws are worded in such a way as to be quite confusing.
