The human equivalent of this robustness is a combination of eloquence and tolerance — the spirit of good conversation. Trolls embody the opposite principle. They are liberal in what they do and conservative in what they construe as acceptable behavior from others. In the late 1980s, Internet users adopted the word “troll” to denote someone who intentionally disrupts online communities. Early trolling was relatively innocuous, taking place inside of small, single-topic Usenet groups. The trolls employed what the M.I.T. professor Judith Donath calls a “pseudo-naïve” tactic, asking stupid questions and seeing who would rise to the bait. The game was to find out who would see through this stereotypical newbie behavior, and who would fall for it. As one guide to trolldom puts it, “If you don’t fall for the joke, you get to be in on it.”

A federal judge ruled Tuesday that the online video-sharing Web site, owned by Google, has to turn over all its user logs to Viacom, the mega-corporation that owns MTV, Paramount Pictures, Comedy Central and VH1, among others.

take the time to learn Web 2.0 etiquette for referencing the work of someone else. Stay legal and be a good example for the youth on the site.

One suggestion that might make it a little easier for you is to use a service like clipmarks as I have on this page. Just be sure you do not ‘clip too much. Remember, just because you can, doesn’t mean that you should. Or as most of us have been asked by a parent:

“If everyone else was jumping off a cliff, would you?”

if a user posts material that infringes on another's copyright, the user will face liability for the infringement, despite the site's potential safe harbor under Section 512.

Web 2.0 Ettiquette

clipper's remarks: Copying and pasting articles infringes on the author's copyright. Instead, use just a small except and link back to the origianal author. This article recommends using clipmarks. Remember, do not copy large sections of the article, even if clipmarks allows you to do it!

For articles, only use a small part of the text and then link to the rest of the article. In this way, it falls under "fair use", and most writers are happy to have the linkback.

when possible, use a trackback. Not only does this notify them that you are using something from their entry, but it is also good for your blog because it may drive a little traffic your way.
