Editors of The Blood-Horse recently sought the answer to this question by producing a comprehensive review of 34 years of historical Thoroughbred stallion progeny records pulled from The Jockey Club's extensive database. The full study, containing more than 200 pages, is available as a free download in PDF format.

Eric Mitchell, executive editor for digital media of The Blood-Horse notes, "There has been anecdotal evidence for years that the Thoroughbred of today is not as tough as it has been in the past. We compiled stallion progeny race records for foal crops from 1970 through 2003, broke the data down by decade, and then calculated starts per foal for each stallion and each decade to look for trends. We were looking to see whether the starts per foal have decreased over time and clearly they have."

Equine Bone Fragility Disorder Reported in California

eterinary researchers at the University of California, Davis, are working to classify a newly observed bone fragility disorder that might prove to be the culprit behind some cases of intermittent chronic lameness that have no other explanation.

After an extensive review of medical records from horses examined at the university's Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital between June 1980 and June 2006, researchers found 16 horses with lameness that could not be pinpointed. All 16 horses showed multiple sites of increased radiopharmaceutical uptake (or "hot spots") on scintigraphic images, which indicates increased bone activity (such as bone remodeling or healing after a fracture).

"The horses all have similar clinical symptoms and present with what we think are differing stages of the same disease," said Jonathan Anderson, BVM&S, resident in equine surgery at the hospital and lead author on the study.

O'Connor Horse Tigger Too Dies at Jersey Event

The U.S. Eventing Association released the following official statement regarding Lauren Kieffer and her mount Tigger Too following the death of the David O'Connor horse on May 10 during the Jersey Fresh CCI3* at the New Jersey Horse Park in Allentown, N.J.

"The organizing committee of the Jersey Fresh CCI3* regrets to announce the death of David O'Connor's horse, Tigger Too, ridden by Lauren Kieffer, at Fence 28 on the cross-country course today. Lauren was uninjured in the fall.

"The FEI investigative panel has been convened to review the facts surrounding the incident, and more information will be released once the investigation is through.

"Our thoughts and prayers remain with the O'Connor and the Kieffer families after the loss of this wonderful horse."

Has the decade produced a better date movie than The Notebook (9 p.m., Saturday, CBS)? You've got all the ingredients for a classic romance; an adaptation from a popular book, a director with indie cred and a family legacy (Nick Cassavetes) who cast his legendary Mom (Gena Rowlands) as one of leads, the great James Garner, and the age old romantic storyline of a couple separated by disapproving parents, and then a war, before love has a chance to conquer all.
