Why Do Doctors Wear Green Or Blue Scrubs?

Scrubs used to be white — the color of cleanliness. Then in the early 20th century, one influential doctor switched to green because he thought it would be easier on a surgeon’s eyes, according to an article in a 1998 issue of Today’s Surgical Nurse. Although it is hard to confirm whether green scrubs became popular for this reason, green may be especially well-suited to help doctors see better in the operating room because it is the opposite of red on the color wheel.

The phenomenon occurs because white light contains all the colors of the rainbow, including both red and green. But the red pathway is still tired out, so the red versus green pathway in the brain signals “green.”

So, although doctors trot down the street these days in a rainbow of patterned and colored scrubs, green may be a doctor’s best bet.

Moon mistaken for UFO

Police in Wales were called to investigate a mysterious flying saucer, only to discover it was the moon.

Control: "South Wales Police, what's your emergency?"

Caller: "It's not really. I just need to inform you that across the mountain there's a bright stationary object."

Control: "Right."

Caller: "If you've got a couple of minutes perhaps you could find out what it is? It's been there at least half an hour and it's still there."

Control: "It's been there for half an hour. Right. Is it actually on the mountain or in the sky?"

After the police patrol car arrives, the script reveals the exchange between the control room and the police officer sent to the scene.

Control: "Alpha Zulu 20, this object in the sky, did anyone have a look at it?"

Officer: "Yes, it's the moon. Over."

Other bizarre calls cited by the police force included someone asking for help voting for Rhydian on The X-Factor and another requesting a pound coin for their supermarket trolley.

South China tigers

"TigerWoods" is one of five zoo-bred South China tigers brought to the Laohu Valley reserve.

The risks from infection, mistakes over drugs and failings in care mean that nearly one in 100 patients admitted to an NHS hospital will die an avoidable deatous sports.

The report was presented at a health managers' conference in Manchester to mark the start of a new NHS safety campaign. Patients will get quicker access to life-saving drugs and a legal right to treatments currently denied them under a shake-up of the National Health Service.

Alan Johnson, the Health Secretary, said: "We have heard from patients that one of their major concerns is the perceived postcode lottery in access to drugs. If a decision is taken not to fund a drug, your local NHS will have to explain that decision to you."
