MySpace Safety Effort Called 'Window Dressing'

In the aftermath of several recent incidents in which young people were exploited by adult predators on MySpace.com, and a lawsuit filed against the Web site, the company announced efforts to increase public awareness about safety issues for children using its social networking service. But Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott called those efforts "window dressing" and not real safety measures

Abbot contacted executives of social networking Web sites in May of this year, asking that they strengthen safeguards against pornography and sexually explicit solicitations

MySpace responded with plans to partner with Hollywood movie stars in launching national television public safety advertisements and a downloadable guidebook to Internet safety for parents.

Sexual Predators Get New Icon

Users of six popular Internet social networking sites will soon see a new icon.

It was developed with the New Jersey Attorney General's Office to allow users to quickly report sexual predators and other abuses.

The effort came after the recent discovery that 29,000 sexual predators had accounts with MySpace.com.

The icon will be featured on myYearbook.com, BlackPlanet.com, MiGente.com, AsianAve.com, Faithbase.com and GLEE.com.

Attorney General Anne Milgram announced the safety partnership Thursday, saying she hopes it would spark a new national standard in reporting online threats.

Milgram is inviting MySpace and Facebook to support the initiative.

VW Wants Identity of Nazi-Themed YouTube Video Creator

clipper's remarks: My granddaughter had several AMV's pulled by YouTube due to reported copyright violations, even though she posted a disclaimer that she claimed NO OWNERSHIP to the music or the videos used. I guess YouTube is getting more cautious about possible legal complications like this one.

A legal spat between YouTube and Volkswagen is throwing light on the increasing copyright surveillance of social networking sites.

Volkswagen has filed a subpoena seeking the identity of a YouTube user who posted a Nazi-themed parody of a recent VW Golf commercial. Volkswagen's move underscores the privacy risks to a blossoming community of users on sites like YouTube and Yahoo Video, and social-networking sites like Facebook and MySpace.

Volkswagen alleges the video violates its copyrights, according to San Francisco federal court documents. The doctored video has been removed from YouTube and is no longer available.

"YouTube complies with valid U.S. legal process, such as a valid court order or subpoena,"

there's no consensus among the social networking sites about how they respond to subpoenas seeking users' identities.

Web Ad Blocking May Not Be Legal

clipper's remarks: I use the Firefox browser exclusively, and love the ad blocking feature. I have seen several people's pages on MySpace that have the ad from the editing page blocking the function buttons on their page. My daughter and granddaughter both remove these gaudy, large ad banners when the are designing or editing their pages.

When I used to record on a VCR from the Local TV stations, I was one of those who stopped to edit out the commercials. It is so aggravating to watch commercial TV and have the program or movie stop every 15 minutes for 5 minutes of mostly vapid, inane commercials.

So ... I guess I'm a law breaker! (LOL ... I'm sticking with my '60's rebel image xp)
