I knew where there were still a few phones that still only charged a dime. This is the end of the thousands of pay phones we here in the U.S. have become accustomed to. AT&T assumes that "private carriers" will take up the slack .. but if a huge company like AT&T wants out, where does that leave a profit for the "no name" companies. Worse service, worse connections, and higher prices!?

I think maybe I am living too long! I have seen way too much changing for the worse. Change for the better is fine, but who makes the decisions as to what is for the best!? The bottom line? Oh well ... so goes the way of the world!

Clip Source: www.informationweek.com

AT&T To Hang Up On Pay Phone Business

Noting that there were 2.6 million pay phones in service in 1998, but just 1 million today, AT&T said it expects "independent providers" to fill the service gap.

AT&T (NYSE: T) dropped a dime on its pay phone business Monday as it announced it will vacate the business by the end of next year.

The coin-operated pay phone and its iconic phone booth numbered in the millions in the mid-20th century, but the business began to shrink in recent years as alternative calling services lead by cell phones pressured the business model.

"This is the right time for us to take this step on behalf of our customers, employees, and stockholders,"

AT&T said it will honor existing contracts and customer service commitments while the business is phased out. BellSouth, which AT&T acquired last year, left the business in 2006.

The first public coin telephone was installed in a Hartford, Conn., bank in 1889

Tags: pay phone, bell telephone, at&t

<clipSource>http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=204600749</clipSource>

FREE 411 Phone Info Service from Google

clipped by: Marcariel
clipper's remarks: This is so cool! They are saying that "the decrease in the internet charges is to create favorable conditions for the electronic commerce development."

Yes, it seems that 21st century business is depending on the internet and computers in general for business communication and applications.

I personally was surprised to read of the charges for internet service in Russia being the same or comparable to American charges for service. Russia, in my lifetime, has been so closed and proprietary about their business, that it was a pleasure to read something about the costs of services for their people.

Thanks again to epheme (new clipper as of yesterday) for introducing me to this source.

Clip Source: eng.cnews.ru

How much is Internet in Russia?

The number of the internet users is growing from year to year. The internet is actively spread not only in Moscow and St. Petersburg, but also in the regions. The quality, speed and convenience of the offered types of linkup are becoming more profound. However, the decisive argument for users is the price. That means providers will have to make concessions under stepping up competition.

The internet-service market in Moscow and St. Petersburg is rapidly developing because of the increase in the number of users.

switchboard or broadband access, Wi-Fi, dedicated lines or ADSL. For all the mentioned types of connection, the operators have developed certain price policy.

Dial-up has died out, which is quite natural, as everyone can find $ 20 monthly on average for an unlimited internet access package through ADSL. For the same $ 20-30 a month one can make use of a dedicated line.

the decrease in fee for communication channels is a historical process

Tags: russia, internet, business, dial-up, telecommunications, technology

<clipSource>http://eng.cnews.ru/reviews/indexEn.shtml?2007/08/07/261754</clipSource>
