The Greek work for courage is thumus and some contend "thyme" is derived from this word.

The Romans put thyme in their bathwater to give themselves courage and strength before battle. They also used thyme to treat depression.

The Scottish highlanders drank wild thyme tea to muster courage and to ward off nightmares.

Thyme was sacred to the Druids, who used it to treat depression and ward off negativity.

So how did thyme get the reputation for inspiring courage and lifting the spirits? The scent of thyme is invigorating and pleasant but there may be more to it than that. In aromatherapy, thyme is considered a circulatory system stimulant and is said to raise low blood pressure

The next time you're feeling depressed or need that extra courage and energy to face the day, try smelling a bit of thyme.

<clipSource>http://www.healthdiaries.com/eatthis/</clipSource>

Thursty Drunk Has Blood Chaser

clipped by: Marcariel
clipper's remarks: You never know what you might do when you're drunk. What a freaky thing. I wonder what else the scientists can make see-through?

Clip Source: news.nationalgeographic.com

For high school students everywhere, this revealing amphibian may be a cut above regular frogs.

That's because the see-through frog does not require dissection to see its organs, blood vessels, and eggs.

Masayuki Sumida, a professor at the Institute for Amphibian Biology at Japan's Hiroshima University, bred the frog to be a humane learning tool.

"You can watch organs of the same frog over its entire life, as you don't have to dissect it,"

Though not yet patented, the frog is the first four-legged, see-through animal to be bred by scientists. Some fish species are also clear.

Only 1 in 16 frogs end up see-through, and Sumida's team has not yet figured out how to pass on the transparent trait to offspring.

Tags: transparent frog, dissection, japan

<clipSource>http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/09/070928-frog-picture.html</clipSource>

Getting Skinny - Investigating Bariatric Surgery

clipped by: Marcariel
clipper's remarks: In America our young people are getting nigger and fatter with each generation. Fast food and sedentary lives are one of the biggest problems. Many obese people (young and old) eagerly turn to what they assume is a quick fix.

Nothing involving your body should be entered into quickly or lightly. This is a good, brief article with a lot of great information.

Clip Source: blog.healthpolitics.org

What you don’t know about bariatric surgery can hurt you

“Obesity is an epidemic!” That’s what we’ve all heard. And the facts are convincing. Our collective Body Mass Index (BMI - which factors in weight and height, and is normally 20 to 25) is growing too fast.

The percentage of Americans with a BMI over 30 (the definition of “obese, versus “overweight” at 25 to 30) was 15% in 1995. A decade later it was 24% and rising, with 5% “morbidly obese” with a BMI over 40.

Being obese can kill you. BMI’s over 30, and especially over 35, are associated with increased rates of high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep disturbances, heart attack, and stroke. So it’s not too surprising that people with high numbers, symptoms of disease, and a history of failed diets turn to the knife.

BOTTOM LINE: Bariatric surgery is a big deal! Go into it with your eyes wide open!

Tags: bariatric, obesity, surgery, bmi, operation, gastric bypass

<clipSource>http://blog.healthpolitics.org/</clipSource>

Red Tide Reproduced In Lab - Biblical Plague?

clipped by: Marcariel
clipper's remarks: It will be great if scientists can predict and prevent this death dealing tide.

Clip Source: dsc.discovery.com

Red Tide Toxins Brewed in Lab

Aug. 30, 2007 — Researchers have finally confirmed a 20-year-old theory about how the red tide algae produce their toxins.

The finding may be a first step in protecting seaside communities, shellfish beds, marine mammals and humans from the periodic outbreaks of the dangerous tides.

Red tides are natural occurrences, when water temperature and salinity encourage overproduction of some algae and plankton. These therapeutics comprise a $7.8 billion annual global market, according to the Marketing Research Bureau, with more than 70% of the source plasma originating from inside Americans.

If you can give blood, you can sell plasma -- probably. You must be 18, weigh at least 110 pounds, be free of communicable disease and in basic good health with strong iron levels.

Not every state has a paid donation center. Several companies recently pulled out of the business.
