At work, as soon as I walked through the doors today--my Mormon co-workers informed me, "isn't it sad that Mother Teresa lost her faith." Ahhh!

There was no focus, of course, on the miraculous ways that God provided for her. There was no lavish concentration on the incredible anecdotes of how -- in the midst of war-torn Beirut -- Mother Teresa had crossed the city and how as she did the gunfire inexplicably -- miraculously -- halted. There was no emphasis on the case of a 30-year-old Indian woman, Monica Besra, who was healed of stomach cancer after praying to the nun, in a miracle approved by Rome.

Nor was there mention -- not in the secular take -- that hundreds of other alleged miracles have also been reported.

Holy water seized from fliers at Lourdes airport

PARIS (AP) — Even holy water from the Roman Catholic shrine at Lourdes can't get by airport security screening passengers for suspicious liquids.

A passenger on a new Vatican-backed charter airline had to hand over a container of water collected at Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral to security officials at the airport in southern France on Monday before boarding a return flight to Rome, officials for Mistral Air said. They identified the passenger as Italian television personality Paola Saluzzi.

Airport officials barred other pilgrims on the Mistral Air flight from taking holy water from the shrine back to Rome, the Italian news agency Apcom reported. The pilgrims protested that they had waited in long lines to fill up their bottles with holy water from the grotto.

Airport officials refused to comment on the incident, saying only that international regulations banning passengers from carrying containers with more than 3 ounces of liquid aboard are applied across the board.

Every destructive emotion bears its own harvest, but anger's fruit is the most bitter of all. Uncontrolled anger is a devastating sin, and no one is exempt from its havoc. It shatters friendships and destroys marriages; it causes abuse in families and discord in business; it breeds violence in the community and war between nations. Its recoil, like that of a high-powered rifle, often hurts the one who wields it as well as its target. Anger makes us lash out at others, destroying relationships and revealing our true nature. The history of the human race is largely the history of its anger.

Nor are Christians exempt from anger's grip. After Jesus' arrest Peter angrily denied his Lord: "He began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, ‘I don't know this man you're talking about"' (Mark 14:71). Paul had to urge the Ephesian Christians to "get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice" (Ephesians 4:31).

In recent times, an expert on angelology and demonology, the chief exorcist of the Diocese of Rome, Fr. Gabriel Amorth, wrote a most concise and lucid summation of the Franciscan thesis in his book An Exorcist Tells his Story. Before he ‘tells his story’, he begins by “first stating some basic facts about God’s plan for creation.” He writes (in Chapter 1):

“All too often we have the wrong concept of creation, and we take for granted the following wrong sequence of events. We believe that one day God created the angels; that He put them to the test, although we are not sure which test; and that as a result we have the division among angels and demons. The angels were rewarded with heaven, and the demons were punished with hell. Then we believe that on another day God created the universe, the minerals, the plants, the animals, and, in the end, man.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department arrested a Paoli, Ind., man Wednesday afternoon on felony charges of battery and confinement after he performed an “exorcism” on a 14-year-old autistic boy over the course of 11 hours, police said.

Sheriff’s Department Det. Brad Swain said Edward F. Uyesugi, 22, turned himself into police at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday.

Witnesses told police Uyesugi had said he punched the boy in the face 20 times and stuck his fingers down the boy’s throat in an attempt to “cast out the demons” in him, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Uyesugi was a pastor-in-training at Cherry Hill Ministries, 417 E. 16th St., the affidavit said.

According to a press release Cherry Hill Ministries issued Wednesday, the church denounced Uyesugi for his behavior and the harm it caused to the boy.

On Sunday, tens of thousands of pilgrims celebrated the 90th anniversary of the famous visions seen at Fatima, Portugal. In response to the continuing interest in the "third secret" given to the three shepherd children, which is rumored to have predicted the end of the Catholic church and/or the world, the Vatican's secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone -- the Pope's second-in-command -- has declared that it is "pure fantasy."

To counter "the most absurd theses" Bertone has published The Last Fatima Visionary: My Meetings With Sister Lucia, which so far is only available in Italian. He said, "Clearing up the question was a pastoral concern."

The visions of a radiant "lady" floating above an oak tree at Fatima, Portugal, on a monthly basis from May to October 1917, have fascinated people for decades.
