It's a classic tale of failure and redemption, the kind of story Hollywood loves to tell.

Fresh off his second successful movie, an up-and-coming director takes a chance on a dark tale of a 21st-century cop who hunts humanlike androids. But he runs over budget, and the financiers take control, forcing him to add a ham-fisted voice-over and an absurdly cheery ending. The public doesn't buy it. The director's masterpiece plays to near-empty theaters, ultimately retreating to the art-house circuit as a cult oddity.

First Things First

Chirutha. It is one of the most anticipated films of the year. Son of the biggest star in Tollywood making grand entry bound to create lot of curiosity and hungama. Amidst all the hoopla, megastar Chiranjeevi's son Ram Charan arrives with Chirutha.

The climax fight and songs stand out in the film. Last 15 minutes is an asset. As always for a Puri film, Ali's comedy works out in its favour.

Kelly: Southland Almost Done

Richard Kelly, director of the upcoming SF epic movie Southland Tales, wrote on his official MySpace.com blog that he is in the final week of post-production on the movie.

"I have been working long, long hours," Kelly wrote this week. "The film is basically finished by the end of the day this Friday."

Kelly added that Sony, which is releasing the film, is putting the finishing touches on a trailer, which will debut "in the first week of September."

"I have seen it, and I can tell you that it is very action-packed, features three songs from the soundtrack, the entire cast of characters and a lot of one-liners," Kelly said. "Very exciting! Can't wait for everyone to see it."

Southland Tales takes place in near-future Los Angeles and follows a disparate group of characters on the eve of an unnamed apocalypse. Kelly promised news about a prequel graphic-novel compilation book and the film's soundtrack soon.

'Star Wars' lightsaber will fly aboard shuttle

CAPE CANAVERAL — May the force be with shuttle Discovery and seven astronauts on an October mission to the International Space Station.

Coming from a galaxy far, far away, the lightsaber wielded by Luke Skywalker in Star Wars will fly aboard the orbiter three decades after the classic movie opened.

"What better way to celebrate the 30th anniversary than to send the original lightsaber into space with the shuttle?" Julie Kuenstle, a spokeswoman for Space Center Houston, said Tuesday.

The lightsaber will be on display at the visitor complex at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston through Labor Day. Then it will be shipped to Kennedy Space Center and packed into Discovery's mid-deck.

NASA spokesman James Hartsfield said the sci-fi sword would remain stowed throughout the shuttle's 13-day mission.

NASA sets aside a small amount of space on every mission for commemorative items and artifacts.

Three are tipped for 'Informers'

Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Basinger and Brandon Routh are in various stages of negotiations to star in the ensemble "The Informers," an adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel. Gregor Jordan is directing the drama, which is being financed by Senator International. Senator's Marco Weber is producing.

Also joining the movie are Ashley Olsen, Jon Foster, Austin Nichols and Lou Taylor Pucci.

Set in 1980s Los Angeles, the script follows seven stories taking course during a week in the life of a movie executive, his wife, his mistress, a rock star, a vampire and a kidnapper.

Thornton will play the movie exec, and Basinger will portray his wife. Routh has been cast as the vampire, while Olsen is a sexually promiscuous girl.

Principal photography will commence in October in Los Angeles, Uruguay and Buenos Aires.

Senator's head of production Vanessa Coifman is executive producing. Ellis and Nick Jarecki co-wrote the script.

Jennifer Garner: Her ‘Kingdom’ Come

Jennifer Garner kicks off the world tour for her new film The Kingdom at Grand Hyatt Tokyo on Thursday in Japan.

Jen told Access Hollywood that she got two heat strokes during the filming of this drama thriller: “I succumbed to the heat a couple times,” she admitted. “I was still breast feeding my baby at the time and so [all of my fluids were going out]. Everything your body needs, all the electrolytes goes to the baby, and so my system was all screwed up and I had heat stroke. And that happened to me… twice. They gave me an IV, filled me back up and sent me back out!”

The Kindgom, which also stars Jamie Foxx, Chris Cooper and Jason Bateman, opens in theaters nationwide on Sept. 28 and in October for Japan.

Jennifer was recently added as a presenter for the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards airing Sunday, September 9 at 8PM ET/PT.

Missing thumbs

Truth be told, of course, the whole "thumbs up" deal began with the Romans.

But several thousand years later, a couple of newspapermen from Chicago adapted the sign (and its "thumbs down" counterpart) to their movie-review show.

In so doing, Roger Ebert and the late Gene Siskel created the most powerful and influential symbol in movie marketing.

Siskel used to joke that their thumbs were insured for a million dollars. (I think he was joking.)

Still, Ebert and Siskel so fiercely protected their trademark -- and their integrity as critics -- that they copyrighted the thumbs designation.

Viewers of last weekend's "At the Movies With Ebert & Roeper" might not have known or cared that the thumbs were missing in reviews delivered by Richard Roeper and Robert Wilonsky (who's filling in while Ebert recovers from surgeries).

But you can be sure that Hollywood noticed, considering how much the film industry relies on those three most coveted words in selling any new release or DVD: "two thumbs up."
