When Giving Up is Good for You

Quitting may very well be good for your health, according to a study reported on by the Association for Psychological Science.

...the psychologists followed teenagers for a full year. Over that time, individuals who did not persist obtaining hard- to-reach goals had much lower levels of a protein called CRP, an indicator of bodily inflammation. Inflammation has recently been linked to several serious diseases, including diabetes and heart disease, suggesting that healthy but overly tenacious teens may already be on the road toward chronic illness later in life.

The lesson isn't necessarily a new one: know when to cut your losses. The upside to the study for those less willing to give up on goals easily is that of the participants who did quit, those who were more willing to set and re-engage in new goals had more sense of purpose. So just because it can be good for you to give up on a goal, that doesn't mean it's time to give up on tough goals altogether.

Stop Unauthorized Access to Emailed Links with Hidelinks

You might be worried about your boss reading your email (it happens). You can't necessarily stop this practice, but you can at least prevent Big Brother from accessing the links that you include in your email by using HideLinks. HideLinks is a free service that operates much like TinyURL in that it shortens long internet addresses; however, it goes one step farther and lets you password-protect links as well. Of course, you'll have to figure out a way to get the password to your email friend—obviously, including it in the body of your encrypted super email sort of defeats the whole purpose.

Sometimes, even though we deserve it, it can be hard to take a compliment. Productivity site Lifehack.org has this suggestion:

It wasn't luck or the goodwill of others or any other reason that you managed to do something praiseworthy, it was your own effort and commitment. Even if you truly were just in the right place at the right time, you deserve credit for recognizing an opportunity and acting on it. If you wouldn't dream of not taking responsibility for your failures, then step up and take responsibility for your achievements.

Of course, it's not a good idea to go too much the other way, but false humility is pretty easy to spot. So own those accomplishments—and enjoy the compliments when you get them.

Ever been in an argument that starts getting really nasty really quick? Self-improvement site Pick the Brain suggests that you put a stop to it:

Firmly but calmly state: "You're very angry right now and you're saying things you don't mean (give them the benefit of the doubt). I'm going to excuse myself. We can talk again after you calm down." Then leave the room or ask them to leave.

Not only does this give the hothead time to cool down and reconsider his/her choice of words, it also saves you from retorting with words you probably will regret.

Do You Sign The Back Of Your Credit Cards?

One of the most common ways to guard yourself against credit card misuse is to sign the back of your card, so that merchants can check the signature on your card with that on your ID. Right? Well, maybe not. According to financial blog The Tao of Making Money, the best practice is not to sign it.

Here's our official advice on signing the strip on the back: Don't sign it. It's useless as a deterrent, as anyone who takes your card then has a sample of your signature which they can not only use on any charge slip, but on your checks as well. However, do not leave the white strip blank. In that space, write: "Ask For Picture ID," and be prepared to back that up someday when you're in a hurry and the clerk wants to see a driver's license as well as the card. It makes the charge transaction a little longer, but a lot safer.

I've been doing this for years and while it's not a perfect solution, it certainly is better than nothing.

Firefox: Run Faster Without Rebooting Reinstalling

If Firefox has a flaw to get bummed about, it's that it slows down your machine after a few hours of steady computing. Digital Inspiration has a workaround for this that (yay!) does not include any sort of ~~restart~~ reinstalling:

Start Firefox and export your bookmarks as a file on your hard-drive (we'll need them later).
Type firefox.exe - P in the Run box of Windows.
Click the Create Profile button without making any modifications to your existing profile (which is normally called "default")

That should do it; now, when you start Firefox in your new profile, you should be up to speed (get it?). Sure, it won't have all the tweaks of your old profile, but if you're just looking for a CPU break, this might be the way to go.

The trailers for Ang Lee's latest move Lust Caution are full of glamour and intrigue in World War II-era Shanghai. As a jewelry lover one of the things I immediately noticed even in just the brief trailer was the large pink diamond ring worn by the lead actress Tang Wei. Turns out that the ring is a one-of-a-kind 6.1 carat Cartier ring. Cartier is also offering a Lust, Caution LoveCharity bracelet which has a mini 18K gold Love ring on a plum silk cord . It sells for $475 and $100 goes to benefit the Film Foundation which was established by Martin Scorsese to promote the need for film preservation.

The fumes at the gas station must be intoxicating because Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens both smiled for photogs at a gas station in Burbank, Calf. on Saturday. The High School sweethearts smiled and laughed their hearts out as Zac’s car was filling up.

Zefron sure looked pumped with his new car, an Audi A6. But then again, he looked pumped filling up his Alero too. Maybe to catch Zanessa smiling, we need more sightings of them at gas stations!

Matthew McConaughey and gorgeous girlfriend Camilla Alves were spotted leaving the George V Hotel in Paris yesterday - and headed off to the airport. The beach hunk slash actor was in the City of Lights to shoot a Dolce & Gabbana commercial (how classy!) while Camilla, you know, probably shopped? It is nice to see Matty away from the water though... although I'm sure he's dying to get back to that Malibu sun!

The city is gonna be way less hot now that they're gone!
