With potential negative and positive health consequences, caffeine can be your friend, but in controlled doses. Here’s what you should remember about caffeine:

Don’t Take Too Much Because of the health risks (above) associated with higher levels of caffeine, as well as the risk of physical dependence that can come with four cups of coffee or more each day, it’s wise to limit your caffeine intake. (Withdrawal symptoms can include cravings, headache, fatigue and muscle pain.)

Water Spider Spins Its Own "Scuba Tank"

Water spiders survive below the surface thanks to a rudimentary "scuba tank" they spin from their own silk, a new study says.

Scientists at the University of Bern, Switzerland, determined that spiders use these scuba tanks, called air bells, as reservoirs, monitoring and replenishing oxygen levels to enable the animals to live underwater.

"The water spider's air bell is in some ways working like an external lung," said study co-author Michael Taborsky.

Found in ponds throughout northern and central Europe, the water spider is the only spider that spends its entire life underwater.

Since the small brown arachnids are air breathers, they have adapted the air bell system to gather oxygen from the atmosphere. (See spiders spinning their deadly silk.)

The air bell serves multiple purposes, said Paul Selden, a professor of invertebrate paleontology at the University of Kansas who was not involved in the study.

Firefox getting swamped with all the add-ons and toolbars? Then why not get rid of the StumbleUpon toolbar. If your primary use of StumbleUpon is that magical Stumble! button, then you might consider uninstalling the toolbar. While I love stumbling and voting myself. There are a lot of buttons and drop-downs that I don’t use at all.

So what then, if you get rid of the toolbar? No more Stumbling? Well, not exactly since you can just use a bookmarklet to let you continue stumbling. Just click and drag this bookmarklet to your Firefox bookmarks toolbar:

9th Annual Bay Area UFO Expo

I’m so bummed I missed it.

This weekend past was the 9th annual Bay Area UFO Expo, the self proclaimed ‘world’s most well attended UFO conference’. As I’m sure you can guess, no actual UFOs were expo’ed. They did have aliens though - Gary Busey was billed as the Guest Entertainer, and if he’s not a lizard alien I’ll eat my copy of Why People Believe Weird Things. I’m sure Wiolawa will back me up on this.

According to the bill there were delvings into the (presumably) related topics of Cabalistic Healing, Time Travel and the Sasquach. The list of exhibits included aura photos, tarot readings, magnetic jewelry, crystal jewelry, geometric jewelry, occult symbolism, astrology, numerology and essential oils. The list of vendors and speakers was a veritable Who’s Who in Woo, speaking on topics ranging from the Hollow Earth theory to Time Travel to Human Devolution (a Vedic Alternative to Darwin’s Theory).

SCRUM is the latest craze that’s sweeping the industry. It's agile, egalitarian and accommodating to iteration. What could be sweeter? Yes, it’s another step closer to the game developer’s promised land... or is it? More importantly, even if it is the promised land and your studio wants to SCRUM, will you be able to, and what will the contract for a SCRUM deal look like? This is a natural continuation of ideas I presented in an article I did about two years ago entitled “A Case for Flexible Milestone Deliverables.”

Firefox: Run Faster Without Rebooting Reinstalling

If Firefox has a flaw to get bummed about, it's that it slows down your machine after a few hours of steady computing. Digital Inspiration has a workaround for this that (yay!) does not include any sort of ~~restart~~ reinstalling:

Start Firefox and export your bookmarks as a file on your hard-drive (we'll need them later).
Type firefox.exe - P in the Run box of Windows.
Click the Create Profile button without making any modifications to your existing profile (which is normally called "default")

That should do it; now, when you start Firefox in your new profile, you should be up to speed (get it?). Sure, it won't have all the tweaks of your old profile, but if you're just looking for a CPU break, this might be the way to go.

High school student suspended for tricking rival fans into insulting themselves

HILLIARD, Ohio - A high school student who tricked football fans from a crosstown rival into holding up signs that together spelled out, "We Suck," was suspended for the prank, students said.

Kyle Garchar, a senior at Hilliard Davidson High School in suburban Columbus, said he spent about 20 hours over three days plotting the trick, which was captured on video and posted on the video-sharing Web site YouTube. He said he was inspired by a similar prank pulled by Yale students in 2004, when Harvard fans were duped into holding up cards with the same message.

At the end of the video, Garchar wryly thanks the 800 Hilliard Darby High School supporters who raised the cards at the start of the third quarter during last Friday's football game.

"It couldn't have been done without you," reads the closing frame of the video.

Garchar, 17, created a grid to plan how the message would be spelled out once fans in three sections held up either a black or white piece of construction paper.

Sony introduces video Walkman

NEW YORK (Reuters) — Consumer electronics maker Sony Thursday said it introduced a new U.S. version of its Sony Walkman that includes the ability to play digital video, the latest potential rival to Apple's dominant iPod media player.

The Japanese company, one of the world's biggest electronics makers, said its NWZ-A810 and NWZ-S610 series of Walkman digital music players would be available in September.

The devices will support an open platform — which means they will play a variety of music formats such as MP3 and Microsoft's WMA, providing more choices for downloading and managing music and video collections online.

Sony added that it would pull the plug on its Connect Music Services, which distributes music in Sony's proprietary ATRAC audio format in North America and Europe. Specific timing will vary, but the move will not occur before March 2008.

River searched for father of Magic's Nelson

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) — Divers resumed searching the Delaware River on Friday for the father of Orlando Magic player Jameer Nelson. Floyd "Pete" Nelson was reported missing Thursday from his job at a tugboat repair shop.

The elder Nelson was last seen near the water, and officials said it was feared that he had fallen into the river.

Mayor Wendell Butler said the U.S. Coast Guard and divers searched the waters until dark Thursday. The search resumed Friday morning.

Floyd Nelson, a Vietnam War veteran, wrote a book about his son's basketball career in 2004 titled Jameer.

Jameer Nelson was a basketball standout at Chester High School and Saint Joseph's University. He was a first-round draft pick in 2004 and is the starting point guard for the Magic.

Food Tastes Boring to Anorexics

Food tastes more bland and boring to anorexics than it does to people without eating disorders, finds a new study.

Furthermore, the inability to enjoy food might last even after people recover from the disease.

Now, brain-scanning research, recently published online in advance of publication in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology, reveals that compared with individuals without an eating disorder, women with anorexia have distinct differences in the insula, a brain region important for recognizing taste.

They measured brain activity in response to sucrose (considered a "pleasant" taste) and distilled water (considered "neutral").

In response to both water and sugars, women who had recovered from anorexia showed significantly less activity in the insula and related brain regions compared with the control group of women. These brain regions recognize taste and judge how rewarding that taste is to the person.
