Could allowing teachers to bring guns to class help prevent Columbine-like tragedies?

The board of the tiny, rural Texas district of Harrold, near the Oklahoma border, thinks so.

It unanimously approved such a plan, to take effect this fall -- and the move appears to be the first of its kind in the United States.

Though the district only has one school and about 100 students, the policy could have massive reppercussions.

PITTSBURGH - The head of a prominent cancer research institute issued an unprecedented warning to his faculty and staff Wednesday: Limit cell phone use because of the possible risk of cancer.

The warning from Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, is contrary to numerous studies that don't find a link between cancer and cell phone use, and a public lack of worry by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Herberman is basing his alarm on early unpublished data. He says it takes too long to get answers from science and he believes people should take action now — especially when it comes to children.

Wayans' 'WayOutTV' will do comedy on YouTube

The 47-year-old comedian has announced the debut of "WayOutTV", a collaboration with YouTube that will show sketch comedy videos that he produces.

Wayans described the venture as In Living Color 2.0— an online version of the hit 1990s TV series that made him and his brothers Keenen Ivory, Shawn and Marlon famous.

"WayOutTV" will allow viewers to share, rate and leave comments on the sketche

"For too long, comedy has been a one-way dialogue, with comedians talking to an audience rather than with an audience," Wayans said in a statement Thursday. "My entire goal is to make people laugh and at the same time find a way to be creative and collaborative with people who want to be a part of the process."

"It corrects the vision just like Lasik does except it's placed inside the eye so you don't have to maintain it," says Dr. Steve Chang, an ophthalmologist and cataract specialist.

The lens is called Visian ICL, or implantable collamer lens, but it's better known as the implantable contact lens. It's been used in Europe and other parts of the world for more than 15 years and now has FDA approval.

"It's made out of collagen-type of material which is a similar type of material that the eyes are made out of," says Dr. Chang.

"We make a very small incision right where the white of the eye meets the colored part of the eye," says Dr. Chang. "Instead of sitting on the surface of the eye, we implant that in the eye through a very tall, small incision and it sits securely inside the eye indefinitely."

Dr. Wright, a 40-year-old runner, decided to study people who kept training as they got older or began competing in middle age. She wanted to know what happens to them and at what age does performance start to decline.

Their results are surprising, even to many of the researchers themselves. The investigators find that while you will slow down as you age, you may be able to stave off more of the deterioration than you thought. Researchers also report that people can start later in life — one man took up running at 62 and ran his first marathon, a year later, in 3 hours 25 minutes.

Researchers say that you should be able to maintain your muscles as you age, including the muscle enzymes needed for good athletic performance, and you should be able to maintain your ability to exercise for long periods near your so-called lactic threshold, meaning you are near maximum effort.

Teen runaway allegedly forced to work as prostitute at parties, beaten

NEW YORK - A police detective forced a 13-year-old runaway to work as a prostitute at parties around the city, telling her that if she attempted to escape he would make her sell herself on the streets, prosecutors said Wednesday.

According to prosecutors, the teenager ran away from her Brooklyn home on Jan. 10 and met someone who offered to get her a job dancing for money at parties. That person then introduced her to Brown, who told the girl she had "purchased" her for $500 and she had to work off the debt, prosecutors said.

Taylor instructed the girl to tell people she was 19 years old and that she charged between $40 and $80 for sexual acts, prosecutors said.

Taylor and Brown took the girl to parties throughout the city where she was told to have sex with about 20 men in exchange for money given to the pair, prosecutors said.

Biologist claims significant step towards artificial life

In a paper published today in Science, Venter's team described the synthesis of the entire genome of the bacterium Mycoplasma genitalium from laboratory chemicals. The resulting DNA sequence has about 582,000 base pairs of genetic code in 485 genes. Venter said it was the largest artificial sequence ever made, 20 times longer than any previous attempt.

The team at the J Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) in Maryland is working on the final step to create life: transplanting the synthetic DNA into a cell in the hope that it will "boot up" the cell and take control of its growth and reproduction.

But Jim Thomas, of the Canadian bioethics organisation ETC group, called for a moratorium. "In the absence of democratic oversight profiteering industrialists are tinkering with the building blocks of life for their own private gain."

Readius bends to needs of e-mail, calling or pocketing

EINDHOVEN, Netherlands — A Dutch company has squeezed a display the size of two business cards into a cellphone no bigger than other mobile phones — by making a screen that folds up when not in use.

The 5-inch display of Polymer Vision's Readius is the world's first that folds out when the user wants to read news, blogs or e-mail and folds back together so that the device can fit into a pocket.

Polymer Vision, spun off from electronics-maker Philips, whetted the appetite of gadget fans more than two years ago when it showed off a prototype. Now, Readius is in production and will go head-to-head with Apple's (AAPL) iPhone and Amazon's (AMZN) e-book reader, Kindle, when it hits stores in mid-2008.

The playlist fixation has a scientific basis: Studies have shown that listening to music during exercise can improve results, both in terms of being a motivator (people exercise longer and more vigorously to music) and as a distraction from negatives like fatigue. But are certain songs more effective than others?

Generally speaking there is a science to choosing an effective exercise soundtrack, said Dr. Costas Karageorghis, an associate professor of sport psychology at Brunel University in England, who has studied the effects of music on physical performance for 20 years.

THE church elder’s reaction was one of utter disbelief. Shaking his head emphatically, he couldn’t take in what the distinguished professor from Yale University was telling him.

"No," insisted Jim McRae, an elder of the small congregation of Clearwater in Florida. "This way of worshipping comes from our slave past. It grew out of the slave experience, when we came from Africa."

But Willie Ruff, an Afro-American professor of music at Yale, was adamant - he had traced the origins of gospel music to Scotland.

The distinctive psalm singing had not been brought to America’s Deep South by African slaves but by Scottish émigrés who worked as their masters and overseers, according to his painstaking research.

He said: "We as black Americans have lived under a misconception. Our cultural roots are more Afro-Gaelic than Afro-American. Just look at the Harlem phone book, it’s more like the book for North Uist.

Pedaling mile after mile in inky darkness in the 508-mile Furnace Creek in Death Valley 10 years ago, McAlpine found her mind wandering. She shifted her focus and began to meditate.

A concept was born.

She has since spun the experience into a class called Meditation Spin at Revolution Fitness in Santa Monica. The class, held in a darkened room, with a single tea candle placed in front of each cycle, started with six students a year ago and has ballooned to as many as 50 in a session.
