clipper's remarks: A few excerpts from an interesting web essay on the exploitation of female beauty and male expectations in advertising. (And, by extension, society?) Worth going through, starting from the beginning.

The following web essay casts doubt on the belief that there is such a simple, self-evident "thing" as beauty. It looks at beauty as a cultural construct, at how beauty is defined, at how fashion magazines cultivate a very particular notion of what it means to be attractive or beautiful. And it suggests that this particular notion may be less about sex, less about actual human sexual behaviors, than it is about power.

Most viewers find the images of the men odd or laughable. But the images of the women seem charming and attractive.

Why should it seem funny to see a picture of adult men striking a pose when the same pose seems normal or charming to us in pictures of adult women?

Yet for some reason, to those of us in Western cultures, it seems normal to display pictures of women striking poses that would seem funny or strange when struck by men.

This might explain why highly accomplished and wealthy women like Kelly Martin, Calista Flockheart, and Sarah Jessica Parker -- currently playing a doctor, a lawyer, and a writer respectively -- would strike submissive, deferential poses for the camera that no accomplished man would strike. They are demonstrating their mastery, their control over, the gaze.

Surprise is often worked into a joke through the 'pull-back/reveal' technique. The joke focuses your attention on a particular angle or detail of the scene, then suddenly pans out to show you the whole, surprising picture. Very often the success of these jokes hinges on the joke-teller's subtle control of rhythm: a beat here, a breath there.

This Monkhouse gag is funny but, of course, it's much better heard than read. On paper, a joke is a pale and inadequate one-dimensional version of itself. In fact, a joke scarcely exists until someone has told it and someone else has laughed.

The who, where, when, what and why of a joke's telling can be more significant that its topic, and no single theory - from Freud's notion of the joke as a release of suppressed sexual neurosis to Schopenhauer's definition of humour as a reaction to incongruity - can explain how jokes work.

Even comedy's greats seem stuck for a proper analysis. When John Cleese tired of questions about where he got his jokes from, he resorted to, 'I buy them from a little man in Swindon.' The truth is much more prosaic. Jokes are about 10 per cent inspiration and 90 per cent whittling and crafting - much of it in front of an audience.

Jerry Seinfeld talks of the comedian's 'third eye', through which he views life with ironic detachment. However, irony and detachment are not enough. Joke writing and performing is a craft, and while an all-encompassing theory of humour may elude us, it is possible to identify some of the basics in the building of a successful joke.

How to be a dick in meetings -- cell phone strategy

Cellular phones. Cell phones are used to ignore people during meetings either by allowing you to take calls from people more important (read: earning a higher salary) than any of the people you are meeting with or to simply make it impossible for other meeting attendees to complete their thoughts.

To take calls from more salaried folk, you should have your ringer set on the “stun” volume, one which ideally sets treesful of birds to screeching every time it goes off within fifty miles of a forest. When your phone rings, thus drawing everyone's exasperated attention, you should theatrically check the caller ID display, then stride out of the room as purposefully as possible to take the call. If you can look up while striding, it will both allow you to avoid the annoyed glares of other meeting attendees and give those attendees the impression that you equate the phone call you are taking with God speaking through a burning bush.

Making it impossible for people to complete their thoughts is normally accomplished by leaving your cell phone on during a meeting and allowing the ring to pierce everyone’s skull as the call is rolled over to voice mail (assuming the caller is unimportant enough that you will remain in the meeting). However, a delightful variation is to put your cell phone on vibrate but leave it on the table, resulting in a noise like a Fisher-Price chainsaw attacking a particleboard tree. I personally had the following conversation during a meeting:

Me: “What I think the problem there is, is—“

Cell phone: BRRRRRRAP.

(Pause)

BRRRRRRAP.

“I just think that it’s not wise to—“

BRRRRRRAP.

(Pause)

BRRRRRRAP.

“Can you turn that off?”
BRRRRRRAP.

(Pause)

BRRRRRRAP.

Other person: “It should be on voice mail now.”

Me: “Was I saying something?”

WASHINGTON, DC—The accidental death of Alan Colmes, the liberal commentator sometimes featured alongside conservative Sean Hannity, has gone unreported on their Fox News political commentary show for two weeks. "I can't understand why—why the Republicans are afraid to pull the trigger on immigration!" said Hannity, speaking to an empty seat across the set. "Would someone, anyone from the other side of the issue please tell me exactly how you seduced them to the Dumb Side? This is backwards thinking!" Hannity did not attend the funeral held last weekend for Colmes, who, according to anonymous sources within Fox News, was caught in a D.C.-area crosswalk when the light changed, flip-flopped on which way to go, and was struck by a dump-truck.
