Treasure hunt on an international scale

Russian parliamentarians and historians have a new lead in the search for the legendary gold of the Tsar's family. According to the new discovery, the whole treasure, or part of it, may be in Japan.

Since the end of the First World War, the mystery of the Tsar’s gold has been consuming the minds of many. Legend has it that Admiral Kolchak was the last known keeper of the Tsar’s treasure. As the most prominent commander of the anti-Bolshevik forces, Kolchak was given charge of the Tsar’s gold reserves, which he passionately protected. It is believed the Russian admiral traveled abroad with the precious metal and funded his army with some of the gold. But when he was captured and killed, the secret of the gold’s location died with him.

The great magician and conjurer, Harry Houdini died on Halloween on October 31st in 1926.

The numerous movies and books published about his enigmatic life generally mention that he spent a good deal of time trying to contact his mother from beyond the grave and held numerous séances.

Though a few accounts point to an obsession with his mother (mostly movie hype), research from The Harry Houdini Museum states that he was a very independent man who left home at 17 and married at 19; even though he cared for his mother in her final days.

Ancient face reading secrets reappear in scientific study

Physiognomy was once a respected twofold science: a method to discern a person’s character from their outward appearance and divine one’s future from one’s physical characteristics. Since the divination aspect of the science was abused (as most divinatory arts are), it was eventually deemed unlawful to practice the art (George II, English Law, 1743) and those who did were publically whipped and sent to prison.

Glasgow University and New Scientist gave Physiognomy and specifically face reading, a chance to make a comeback.

In February 2009, they conducted a study that examined whether self-assessed personality characteristics could be identified from appearance. Glasgow University's, Dr Rob Jenkins said:

"It's possible that there is some correlation between appearance and personality because both are influenced by our genetic make-up."

A November 9th 2009, press release, Antimicrobials: Silver (and copper) bullets to kill bacteria, reports Dana Filoti’s thin films of silver and copper she developed that combine silver and copper ions in a hard ceramic structure: “The combination of silver and copper work synergistically to better kill bacteria.”

UCLA study proves looking at photo of loved one reduces pain

According to a recent study by UCLA psychologists, looking at a photo, holding the hand or even just thinking of a loved one will reduce pain.

The study which appeared in the November 2009 issue of the Journal Psychological Science, involved 25 women who received a moderately painful heat stimulus on their forearms while they looked at either a photo of their loved one, a stranger or a chair.

I didn't originally plan on walking all those streets. But I've always liked to explore, and sightseeing is sort of an everyday activity, not limited to famous sites. I moved to New York in the summer of 2000, and everything seemed so glamorous. Even the most mundane things were cool, like, I don't know, busses and post offices ("this is a New York City post office," I would think). I still get starry-eyed- I think a lot of people do. The biggest celebrity in New York City is New York itself.

On October 7th, Carl Jung’s legendary Red Book (Liber Novus) will finally be available to the general public. The original book will be on display at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City, the same day W.W. Norton & Company releases the book in both a German and English translation.

“Jung worked to prevent his conscious mind from blocking out what his unconscious mind wanted to show him. Between appointments with patients, after dinner with his wife and children, whenever there was a spare hour or two, Jung sat in a book-lined office on the second floor of his home and actually induced hallucinations — what he called “active imaginations.” “In order to grasp the fantasies which were stirring in me ‘underground.’"

Astrology October 2009 horoscopes: Predictions for all 12 zodiac signs

October 2009: Monthly predictions for those who appreciate this ancient science.

We are almost there…inches away from reaching some form of dry land. The phantasmagoric haze surrounding us will lift somewhat by the end of the month.

Like Max in Where the Wild Things Are, we will return to find we were safely sleeping in our beds the entire time. A hot and heavy Aries Full Moon will be shining through our bedroom windows urging us to new adventures and we notice… our food is still hot. Did we tame the “wild things” in our lives without blinking once like Max?

Hopefully, these past months have brought some order to our lives.
