French-British anthropologist, Maurice Bloch, of the London School of Economics believes that humans alone practice religion because they're the only creatures to have evolved imagination. The development of imagination occurred at the time of the Upper Palaeolithic 'revolution' 40-50,000 years ago. Bloch challenges the popular notion that religion evolved and spread because it promoted social bonding, as has been argued by some anthropologists.

According to Bloch's theory, initially humans had to develop the essential brain architecture to imagine things and beings that don't exist physically, and the possibility that people somehow survive on after their death.

Once this was acquired, we had access to a form of social interaction unavailable to any other creatures on the planet. Exclusively, humans could use what Bloch calls the "transcendental social" to unite with groups, such as nations and clans, or even with imaginary groups such as the dead

This is a really touching story of a former civilian contractor in Iraq who decided to start a charity to donate pediatric wheelchairs to the children of Iraqis.

Khaled is a father of three. On this day, his young daughter, Mariam, is getting fitted for her new wheelchair. Her arms and legs are painfully thin, little more than skin and bone. She's 7 years old, but looks barely half that. She and both her siblings, a sister and brother, suffer from varying degrees of polio. None of them can walk.

Asked how he and his family cope, Khaled chokes up, fighting back tears.

"I am sick of life -- what can I say to you?" he says after a long pause.

One man, Brad Blauser, has vowed to try to make life a little easier for these families by organizing the distribution of wheelchairs, donated and paid for by his charity, Wheelchairs for Iraqi Kids.

Blauser has partnered with a nonprofit group called Reach Out and Care Wheels, which sells him the chairs at a manufacturing price of about $300.

The chairs are made by prisoners at the South Dakota State Penitentiary and ultimately delivered in Iraq by the U.S. military.

Polaroid instant film will be available in stores into next year, the company said. Meanwhile, Polaroid -- which stopped making instant cameras over the past couple years -- is seeking a partner to acquire licensing rights, in hopes that another firm will continue making the instant film and keep limited supplies available.

Polaroid introduced its first instant camera in 1948, just as the baby boom got started and parents were looking for new ways to take photos of their kids. Film packs contained the chemicals for developing images inside the camera, and photos emerged from the camera in less than a minute.

Now, some camera buffs who still use Polaroids for fun are trying to buy as much as they can.

Joe Howansky, a 23-year-old professional photo technician from Queens who has shown Polaroid shots at art galleries in New York City, said he bought $800 worth of Polaroid film at a discount warehouse club after he learned Friday that Polaroid planned to stop producing its film.

Genarlow Wilson, who spent two years of a 10-year prison term for having consensual sex with another teen before being freed in late October, will be off to college next week.

"I've been wanting to go college for so long," Wilson , 21, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution after it was announced on the Tom Joyner radio show Thursday. The Tom Joyner Foundation, an educational non-profit group founded a decade ago by the nationally syndicated radio personality, will pay for Wilson to attend Atlanta 's historically Black Morehouse College .

The gift will cover tuition, books and on-campus housing. "It was very generous for [Joyner] to do that for me. I can't say enough to express my gratitude. I won't let him down," he said. "I am more than ready for it. The 16th can't come soon enough."

"It helped me grow as a person, made me stronger, made me more ambitious,” Wilson told the Journal-Constitution. "I was at my lowest point in life. Now everything I wanted to do can finally happen."

South African’s Sexual Offences Act, (a law designed to protect children from sexual abuse) would make kissing and fondling among teens (12 to 15) against the law, even if it is consensual.

The language in the legislation, signed last month, specifically says that “direct or indirect contact…between the mouth of one person…and the mouth of another person” is labeled “sexual violation” between minors, reports the BBC.

“Can you really see the cops charging in on a party and breaking up two kids huddling in a corner having a kiss,” Kenneth Verwey, superintendent of the Durban Metro Police told the BBC. He also speculated that the clause may have been added to slow the spread of HIV between young people.

Among other things, the act expands the definition of rape, allowing men and boys to allege rape for the first time. But the law still requires young people to testify in court in front of their alleged abusers

Maternity Leave for Pregnant Teens

Pregnant high school girls in Colorado may soon be able to take maternity leave.

Denver Public Schools is putting together guidelines for pregnant students that could allow them leave anywhere from four to six weeks after they give birth. They'll be expected to complete their school work at home and keep up with the rest of the classes.

School officials believe it's important for these teen moms to have time to bond with their little ones.

Statistics nationwide show 42 of every 1,000 high-school-aged girls are having babies, and the rate is increasing.

The issue of maternity leave came up in Denver after the school district got some complaints that some students were being told to report back to class the day after they got out of the hospital or risk getting unexcused absences.

AIDS rates in New York rising

The new year brings bad news about a resurgence of AIDS in New York , with rates of infection rising by a third among young gay men during a five-year span.

The New York City Health Department’s new numbers show rates of new infections of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, rose 32 percent in the five years from 2001 to 2006 among young gay men of all races and ages, The New York Times reports.

Blacks are still nearly twice as likely to get HIV as other racial groups nationally. However, in New York , the rate for young gay Black and Latino men rose 34 percent higher during the study period as for other racial groups; the rates of HIV transmission among older gay men continue to decline, according to the Times.

The jail booking mug of Only Al-Khidhr taken in October 2005 after Al-Khidhr was jailed on charges including public drunk, was posted around the Harrison County jail booking area as a 'trophy picture.'

Attorneys Jim Halliday and Robert Harenski have filed a civil lawsuit on Al-Khidhr's behalf. The lawsuit is one of two similar lawsuits they have filed in the past two weeks. They seek no specified amounts, but want compensation for physical and emotional damage. And they expect to file others soon.

"All of their stories are similar," Halliday said. "So many people never complained officially because they didn't think anyone would believe the atrocities actually happened.

"The jail hid behind the shield of accreditation and touted itself as meeting national standards. In actuality, the atrocities were covered up and the abused were taunted and threatened with criminal charges of assaulting an officer."

The lawsuit for Al-Khidhr and one for Marguerite Carrubba name many of the same defendant

More than two years after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita battered the Mississippi Gulf Coast, private tests of FEMA travel trailers and mobile homes provided to storm victims indicate that high levels of formaldehyde gas in the units is much more widespread than the government has acknowledged.

The previously undisclosed test results from nearly 600 units, reviewed by msnbc.com, found that 95 percent of the temporary housing units provided by FEMA measured at least twice the CDC’s maximum recommended level for long-term exposure to the toxic gas. In some extreme cases, the levels were 70 times the long-term standard.

The tests were conducted by the Sierra Club and a Galveston, Texas, law firm that is involved in federal litigation against the manufacturers of the travel trailers and mobile homes that FEMA distributed.

But the agency continues to provide mobile homes to disaster victims,

including 50 it sent to people left homeless by last month’s wildfires in Southern California

Woman Sleeps Through Rape?!?

A lawyer for the man accused of raping a University of Cincinnati student said the encounter could have been consensual because the woman has a history of sleepwalking.

Ford's lawyer, Jeff Adams, said prosecutors told him the woman takes prescription medication and has a sleepwalking condition, a fact that will likely be the core part of Ford's defense.

"It goes to consent," he said. "How is he to know she is sleepwalking, if it's a dream 'yes' or a real 'yes?' "

Two passing motorists reported seeing Ford on top of a woman near a White Castle restaurant on Taft Road near I-71, and called police from their cell phones, Cincinnati police said.

When police arrived, the woman was still asleep, according to police reports. She was taken to University Hospital for treatment.

Sleep medicines such as Lunesta and Ambien have been reported to cause sleepwalking in patients, said Dr. James Knepler, who specializes in sleep disorders at the University of Cincinnati's Comprehensive Medicine Center.

Iraq's New Crisis: Parents Abandoning their Children

The head of Iraq's main humanitarian group said an 18-year-old approached him with a baby suffering from leukemia. The desperate mother said she'd do "anything" for treatment for her child -- and then offered herself up for sex.

Said Ismail Hakki breaks down in tears as he recalls that story. Leukemia can be treatable to a degree in much of the world, but not in Iraq. The baby died two months later.

The plight of Iraq's children is nearing epidemic proportions, he said, with mothers and fathers abandoning their children "because they're becoming a liability." The parents don't do it out of convenience, they do it out of desperation.

Hakki says Red Crescent has the monumental task of treating and feeding more than 1.6 million children under the age of 12 who have become homeless in their own country. That's roughly 70 percent of the estimated 2.3 million Iraqis who are homeless inside Iraq.
