clipper's remarks: The National Council of Churches urges churches to look at politicians, government policies and civic leaders through a wider lens and to ask how they measure up to biblical teaching about peace, justice, protection of the weak and the poor, and stewardship of Creation.

A Kailua church will use the National Council of Churches' "Christian Principles in an Election Year" for an eight-week course of study that will bring Scripture to bear on speeches and platforms of presidential contenders Barack Obama and John McCain."

"We'll be doing what churches know how to do: ask faith questions about real life," Summers said.

Among the 10 "Christian principles" in the National Council of Churches' guide to listening to politicians are:

» "God created us for each other, and thus our security depends on the well-being of our global neighbors." Translation: Shape foreign policy based on cooperation.

» "Those who follow Christ are called to heal the sick." Translation: Provide health care for all.

» "Christians have a biblical mandate to welcome strangers." Translation: How does that look as an immigration policy?

The national organization provided a list of Old and New Testament passages to use in examining what politicians propose to do when they are in power. Jesus' command to "Love your neighbor as yourself" tops that yardstick.

Mr. Cheney has been spoiling for a fight with the Russians for a couple of years, and he and his allies have seized upon Georgia's and Ukraine's stated aims to join NATO as a way of riling Moscow. By cranking up the dispute with Russia over NATO, Mr. Cheney is also shifting the political debate in the United States away from the state of the economy and toward the issue of national security.

And if the presidential election hinges on national security, Glenny observes, "John McCain has to be the favorite."

So, he asks: "Who set the trap in Georgia? Mr. [Vladimir] Putin and his thuggish security service pals or Mr. Cheney and his equally unflappable neo-con friends?"

The bottom line question, then, might not be who is responsible for losing Georgia, but, rather, has the loss of Georgia been John McCain's gain?

Fidelity Printers & Refiners, the state-owned company that tirelessly churns out bank notes for the Robert Mugabe regime, was thrown into a crisis early this month after a German company stopped supplying bank note paper because of concerns over Zimbabwe's recent violent presidential election, widely seen as fraudulent by international observers.

Despite the recent currency shortage, the Zimbabwean dollar has continued to slide against the U.S. dollar and shopkeepers are still increasing their prices steeply. The price of the state-owned Herald newspaper has leaped from 200,000 Zimbabwean dollars early this month to 25 billion now. Before the crunch, a beer at a bar in Harare, the capital, cost 15 billion Zimbabwean dollars. At 5 p.m. July 4, it cost 100 billion ($4 at the time) in the same bar.

An hour later, the price had gone up to 150 billion ($6).

Activists hope to name a treatment plant after the president, and they've submitted petition signatures to get the proposal on the ballot. The White House is not amused.

A group calling itself the Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco this week submitted a proposal to rename a sewage treatment plant after the outgoing chief executive in recognition of the political and environmental "mess" they say will be his legacy.

Supporters submitted 12,000 signatures with San Francisco election officials, hoping to place on the ballot an initiative that would rechristen the Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant as the George W. Bush Sewage Plant.

"We think this is a fitting tribute to this president," said Brian McConnell, a member of the group, whose insignia shows the presidential seal with a bald eagle holding two plungers. "It's fair to say that we're going to be cleaning up a substantial mess over the next decade or more, thanks to Bush.

Republicans aren't amused by the gesture.
