Choosing A Wife

There is a man who has three girlfriends, but he does not know
which one to marry. So he decides to give each one $5000 and see how
each of them spends it.

The first one goes out and gets a total makeover with the money.
She gets new clothes, a new hairdo, manicure, pedicure, the works, and
tells the man, “I spent the money so I could look pretty for you,
because I love you so much.”

The second one went out and bought new golf clubs, a CD player, a
television and a stereo and gives them to the man. She says, “I bought
these gifts for you with the money because I love you so much.”

The third one takes the $5000 and invests it in the stock market,
doubles her investment, returns the $5000 to the man and reinvests the
rest. She says, “I am investing the rest of the money for our future
because I love you so much.”

The man thought long and hard about how each of the women spent

the money. He finally decided to marry the one with the biggest tits.

It may not be fun for all the family – well, not in the same way as Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit or Mousetrap, say. The themes of empire building and terrorist-style attacks on opponents would probably provoke an outbreak of spluttering over the Christmas sherry.

It is rare, however, for a board game to be seized by the police. This week that distinction befell War on Terror: The Boardgame; a set was confiscated from climate protesters in Kent.

Following a series of raids on the climate change camp near Kingsnorth power station, officers displayed an array of supposed weapons snatched from demonstrators: knives, chisels, bolt cutters, a throwing star – and a copy of the satirical game, which lampoons Washington's "war on terror".

For the game's creators, Andrew Sheerin and Andy Tompkins, web designers from Cambridge, the inclusion of their toy was a shock.

Spoons.

Last week, we took some friends out to a new restaurant, and noticed that the waiter who took our order carried a spoon in his shirt pocket. It seemed a little strange.

When the waiter brought our water and cutlery, I noticed he also had a spoon in his shirt pocket. Then I looked around and saw that all the staff had spoons in their pockets.

When the waiter came back to serve our soup I asked, "Why the spoon?" "Well, "he explained, "the restaurant’s owners hired Andersen Consulting to revamp all our processes. After several months of analysis, they concluded that the spoon was the most frequently dropped piece of cutlery. It represents a drop frequency of approximately 3 spoons per table per hour. If our staff are better prepared, we can reduce the number of trips back to the kitchen and save 15 man-hours per shift."

The beauty of today's search engines is their simplicity. Type a few keywords into an empty box, and see the 10 most relevant results.

This week, Mozilla Labs expects to launch a similar interface for its Firefox Web browser. The new interface, called Ubiquity, lets users carry out all sorts of complex tasks simply by typing instructions, in the form of ordinary sentences, into a box in the browser.

For example, to e-mail a paragraph or picture from a Technology Review article to a friend using Ubiquity, simply select the text or image, press a keyboard shortcut to reveal an input box, and type "e-mail to Max."

The idea, says Beard, is to make it easier to find and share information on the Web while avoiding cumbersome copy-and-paste instructions.

Ubiquity aims to eliminate both tiresome mouse movements and the need for multiple browser plug-ins.

The project is being released in an early form--version 0.1--so it's not expected to work perfectly straightaway.

Hitler to get Pulp Fiction treatment in Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards

It is not so much Kill Bill as Kill Adolf. Quentin Tarantino, master of cinematic violence, is about to stir up a hornets’ nest in Germany with a war film that depicts Nazi soldiers having their brains bashed out with a baseball bat wielded by a vengeful American.

The tone of the film, provisionally entitled Inglorious Bastards, is set early on by Lieutenant Raine in a pep talk to his men. According to a leaked version of the script, the officer says: “Every man under my command owes me one hundred Nazi scalps . . . and y’all will git me one hundred Nazi scalps, taken from the heads of one hundred dead Nazis, or die trying.”

To judge by the leaked Tarantino script, the only good German is a dead one – with the suspense concentrated on how he should die. For modern Germany that represents a regression to the days of the crudest antiGerman war propaganda.

Why We Want Our Kids Back Too

I grew up in the inner cities of Chicago—places where buses hate to stop, and cabs hate to come. My parents worked hard. Most of our neighbors worked hard. Some people tried. Some people just gave up. Others gave up while they tried and vice versa.
When there was violence, we cried and tried to stop it. When there was death we cried, wondered why and tried to deal with it. But we had to do these things alone.
There were no crush of grief counselors when our 11 year olds got shot by strays or on purpose. There were no pundits filling column space and air time when our girls got raped or became pregnant too soon. And when our children came up missing… when our children came up missing…
When our children came up missing there was silence. Silence and indifference. There still is.
I saw enough missing and dead black kids coming up that it taught me something about black folks, or at least the way black folks are perceived:
Black children are disposable expectations.

The Communication Workers of America released their second annual state-by-state Internet speed report, finding "the average U.S. Internet speed was 2.3 megabits per second (mbps), representing a minimal gain of 0.4 mbps over last year's average speed. At this rate, it will take us more than a hundred years to catch up to Japan, where average speeds are estimated at 63 mbps." The red line--Gross Debt--is the scary (and actual) one; it includes loans from government trust funds (mainly Social Security) that will have to be repaid/made good on. We spent thirty years responsibly working it down after the war.

Thanks to the irresponsible voodoo magic of the Reagan Revolution, it's gone from 34% of GDP to nearly 70%. If it sounds too good to be true ("It's easy. All we have to do is cut taxes! And you'll like that, right? And vote for me?"), it is.

But let's zoom in:

2007: 65.5%
2008: 67.5%
2009: 70.4%

Yikes.

The one encouraging thing? It looks like it's projected to decline! Oh, wait--that's assuming that the Bush tax cuts are repealed.

The Justice Department has proposed a new domestic spying measure that would make it easier for state and local police to collect intelligence about Americans, share the sensitive data with federal agencies and retain it for at least 10 years.

The proposed changes would revise the federal government's rules for police intelligence-gathering for the first time since 1993 and would apply to any of the nation's 18,000 state and local police agencies that receive roughly $1.6 billion each year in federal grants.

Taken together, critics in Congress and elsewhere say, the moves are intended to lock in policies for Bush's successor and to enshrine controversial post-Sept. 11 approaches that some say have fed the greatest expansion of executive authority since the Watergate era.

They say the measures preserve civil liberties and are subject to internal oversight.
