By covering a simple piece of paper with ink made of carbon nanotubes and silver nanowires, Stanford researchers were able to create a simple, low-cost battery, which can be used almost anywhere, allowing for many clever applications.

“This technology has potential to be commercialized within a short time,” said Peidong Yang, professor of chemistry at the University of California-Berkeley. “I don’t think it will be limited to just energy storage devices,” he said. “This is potentially a very nice, low-cost, flexible electrode for any electrical device.”

A Sea Change is about ocean acidification. What is it?

It’s a fairly straightforward phenomena. It occurs when carbon dioxide (mostly manmade) from the atmosphere combines with saltwater to form carbonic acid, which is essentially the bubbles you see in Coca-Cola. In the ocean, the carbonic acid makes it difficult for calcium carbonate to form, and calcium carbonate is essential for shellfish to form their shells. We looked at ptrepods, snail-like creatures at the bottom of the food web that are extremely vulnerable to not being able to form a shell. It’s the primary food source for juvenile salmon and many other fish. This threatens the entire food chain.

Pearl Harbor survivor Ed Borucki has returned to the islands 18 times since 1961 to honor those who died on the light cruiser USS Helena on Dec. 7, 1941.

"There were 2,390 people killed in two hours," Borucki, 89, said. "It was the worst disaster in naval history.

Borucki, a former chief petty officer, and retired Warrant Officer Albert Fynan, 90, are among the 40 survivors of the 1941 Japanese attack on the Pacific Fleet attending tomorrow's services marking the 68th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack.

He left a 35-cent-an-hour job at the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts making M-1 rifles because the Navy promised to pay him $21 a month.

At the conclusion of his visit to the alabaster memorial, Borucki stood at attention in his dark blue dress uniform in the Arizona's shrine room. Standing before a wall that bore the names of the Arizona's crew killed in the attack, Borucki rendered a salute.

An overturned poultry truck brought them to the area near the 101 and 170 freeways in 1969. Despite a city effort to completely remove them, they seem to keep coming to roadways to roost.

Tomatoes as carnivorous plants

Botanists have discovered for the first time that the plants are carnivorous predators who kill insects in order to “self-fertilise” themselves. New research shows that they capture and kill small insects with sticky hairs on their stems and then absorb nutrients through their roots when the animals decay and fall to the ground. It is thought that the technique was developed in the wild in order to supplement the nutrients in poor quality soil – but even domestic varieties grown in your vegetable patch retain the ability.

The fact that they are capable feeding on small insects has been overlooked because domesticated varities are typically grown in rich soils where such dietary supplementation is unnecessary.

Puppies to rescue stressed out college kids

Students at Chapman University will have some cuddly canines to help them cope with the stress of finals this month. The Orange County, Calif., school’s Active Minds Club has put together a little something called “Furry Friends for Finals.” The hope is that the pups will help students de-stress.

The puppies will be stationed outside the university library, hoping to do their part to help the students survive in the middle of cram week, according to the LA Times.

It’s a brilliant idea — one I could have really used at Northwestern U. And it’s a win-win, especially if shelter dogs or dogs in need of foster homes could be used. (Not for adoption purposes, but just to get them out of shelters and into loving hands for an afternoon.) I hope more colleges and dog people can get together to create a program like this.

The dogs don’t need to be puppies to be therapeutic. They just have to be their good old doggy selves, and they’ll be better than almost any stress therapy money can buy.

When we think of slugs, most of us picture the small, grey, slimy land variety. But under the surface of the ocean lives a whole other world of colorful, fascinating sea slugs. They’re called nudibranchs, and they come in a stunning array of colors and shapes.

So why are nudibranchs so odd looking? They have probably evolved to have very bright colors in order to warn predators away. Nudibranchs’ skin is usually poisonous or at least very foul-tasting, making them inedible to most other creatures. Their strange coloration lets fish know that they won’t enjoy a mouthful of nudibranch. Interestingly, nudibranchs are hermaphroditic (they have sex organs of both genders) but they don’t self-fertilize.

Artificial lens implant results in Hi-Def vision

Patients in the U.K. are having their eyes fitted with an artificial lens that allows them to see in “high definition.”

Surgeons implant the lens into the eye using the same type of procedure used for cataracts. Made from light-sensitive silicone, the lens can give patients vision better than 20/20, or what we call “perfect vision” for humans.

The lens, which can cure cataracts and far-sightedness, can be fine-tuned for focus. By shining ultraviolet light on parts of the lens, surgeons can change its shape and curvature and alter vision.

In a way, the lenses are like rewritable CD-ROM discs: they can be adjusted several times until perfected, and a final blast of UV light permanently fixes the lens’ shape.

Some Entangled Line Breaks Free From Whale

Several hundred feet of rope that had been tangled on a juvenile humpback whale near Maui came free in the past day, but some still remains, according to the National Marine Sanctuary's Marine Mammal Response Team.

A team attached a transmitter to the whale on Wednesday by tossing a grapple onto the derelict fishing gear. The grapple came loose, but that turned out to be a good thing because a couple hundred feet of line came off with it, officials said.

An estimated 100 feet of line remains caught in the whale's mouth.

The team tried to cut it free, and nearly did, but the whale became more evasive. Now, the rescue team is tracking the whale with another transmitter, waiting for another opportunity to free the whale of the line.

If they cannot cut it free, officials said they can only hope the line will eventually break on its own and whale's wounds will heal.
