had-a-nap" shebang. For this and countless other reasons, John Collee's resplendent cinematic homage to Charles Darwin will doubtless ruffle the made-in-a-day feathers of evolution deniers around the world – if, as currently seems unlikely, it can find a US distributor.

Inevitably, Darwin's story has been narrativised, tightened and passed through a dullness filter to Hollywoodify it (no reference to his work The Formation of Vegetable Mould Through the Action of Worms here)

However, even Darwin pedants should see this as a timely, compelling and essential reminder of his brain-boggling contribution to our understanding of the world

Agnostics and atheists

There is a common misconception that agnosticism lies somewhere between theism and atheism.

In truth, they are not comparable terms. Theism, and atheism, are about belief. Gnosticism, and agnosticism, are about knowledge.

Agnosticism is essentially just saying "we do not (or can not) know". However, that has no bearing over whether one actively believes in a deity.

For example, one could say, "I believe in a god, but don't think we can truly prove his/her existence", and you'd be an agnostic theist. On the opposite side, "I don't believe in a god, but don't think we can truly prove they don't exist" is an agnostic atheist.

There are, of course, the much less reasonable viewpoints on both ends, as well: "There is definitely a god," "there definitely is no god". Those would be gnostic theist, and gnostic atheist, views.

Rise of Atheism to be Taught in British Religious Studies Classes

In new religious studies classes in the UK, the topics on the syllabus are keeping up with the times:

Students studying a new GCSE Religious Studies course will learn about Druidism, Rastafarianism and the “rise of atheism”.

The new course, Religion and Belief in Today’s World, will be piloted in 2009 by the Oxford Cambridge and RSA (OCR) exam board. It has been denounced as popularist by critics.

The “groundbreaking” new syllabus largely excludes the Bible and other religious texts.

Religious attitudes towards medical and sexual ethics, including areas such as same-sex relationships and cloning, will be covered.

The influence of the British Humanist Association, the group behind the recent atheist bus advertisements, and the novels of Philip Pullman will be included.

A question science can't answer?

"Is there a God?" shot back a boy near the window.

"Good," said Mr. Campbell, an Anglican who attends church most Sundays. "Can't test it. Can't prove it, can't disprove it. It's not a question for science."

I despise that chicken-hearted answer. There are two reasonable ways to address that. One is to accept the usual open-ended, undefined vagueness of the god entity and point out that the reason it can't be answered is that it is a bad question — it's not even wrong. Science doesn't answer it, but then no discipline can, because it's a garbage question like "what color are invisible elephants?" If that's what window-boy intends with his petty little gotcha, he deserves to have the inanity of his idea disparaged.

The other approach

pin the question down. What god? What actions has it taken in the natural world? How does it influence us specifically? Then you can tackle that god with science by testing the purported effects it has

ten questions (with sub-questions) that bright kindergartners have asked, thought about asking, or should have thought about

1. Who created God?

This is the first question my Rabbi refused to answer, and now I understand why

2. What was God doing before He created humans?

3. Since we are created in God’s image, does He look or act like us?

4. Why did God stop talking to humans (me)?

If people today claim that they have regular conversations with God, we think they are crazy. Were those so-called ancient prophets also crazy?

5. Why do bad things happen to good people?

6. Does God ever change His mind when we pray?

7. Why is belief so important to God when He judges us?

8. How much better is the worst person in heaven than the best person in hell?

9. Will I be the same person in heaven that I am on earth?

If I can sin on earth, but not in heaven, then I will be a different person

10. Why are there other religions?

After all these millennia, can’t a benevolent God help us get it right?
