24 November 2009: Part artist, part detective, Arthur Fellig – better known as Weegee – prowled the seedy underbelly of pre-war New York, looking for crime scenes to photograph. A press photographer whose nickname came from his mysterious, ouija-like ability to sense trouble, he developed his stark and noirish signature style by chasing the city's emergency services.

Weegee later went on to work in film, collaborating with the likes of Stanley Kubrick, but is best remembered for photography that typified New York street life between the wars. A selection of his works – many of which have never previously been seen in the UK – go on display at Michael Hoppen Gallery from 25 November until 10 January 2010

‘ Pras was born in 1952 in the south-west of France in a toy shop. After more than 20 years spent as a painter, and also a sculptor of recovered objects, Pras conceived in 1997, an astonishing form of expression, using photography as a basis for the creation of what amounts to a form of installation art. Pras’s work does not illustrate the painter’s art but the way the eye views an object. In fact, brush and paint are replaced by the object itself. By anamorphosis he creates a picture in relief and gives birth to portraits by randomly accumulating common objects. Pras sets up his camera at a well-defined angle so that the objects themselves merge and a portrait appears from this bric-à-brac - the work of art is accomplished ! The photograph is the only remaining trace of this ephemeral work.’ Link here.

Berlin East Side Gallery

The East Side Gallery is the longest preserved stretch of the former Berlin Wall.

It is the largest open-air gallery in the world with 106 original mural paintings on 1.3 km-long created by artists from all over the world after the collapse of East Germany.

Today, it is being renovated for the Commemorations of the 20th anniversary of the "Fall of the Wall"

12 October 2009: The installation of a giant shipping container, resembling a cavernous black hole, marks Tate Modern's 10th annual commission for the building's Turbine Hall. The work, by Polish artist Miroslaw Balka, measures up to 30 metres long and 13 metres high. The Guardian's art critic, Adrian Searle, described the artwork as occupying 'a space that asks for silence'.

How It Is will be open to the public at Tate Modern from tomorrow until 5 April 2010

Even perspective seems distorted; there's no discernible vanishing point. If the walls close in, so the dark seems to open out, both unfolding and enveloping. You wrestle for a sense of volume, and end up feeling the walls for guidance. They are lined, unexpectedly, with felt.

Now, the big question, if you haven't already gone to look - what kind of building is this contained in?

A giant three-headed elephant building, of course. I don't quite know how it's done, but the big bronze elephant is basically standing on the stained glass dome.

The official Erawan Museum website gives a good amount of the back story. There is also an article in ThaiAsiaToday called Heavan's Above! that's gives further detail.

Anyone of a squeamish disposition may want to avoid a certain room at the National Portrait Gallery, which today displayed its latest, £300,000, acquisition: 10 pints of the artist Marc Quinn's frozen blood in a self-portrait cast of his head, sitting zen-like on a concealed refrigeration unit.

Self (2006) is one of Quinn's "blood heads", among Brit Art's most striking images. Quinn said: "For me, it was always about making the ultimate portrait that had the form of me but that was also made of me. It is sculpture pushed to the absurd, logical extreme."

This is the fourth blood head, made using blood removed by Quinn's doctor a pint at a time, every six weeks. The artist intends to make a head every five years to document his ageing. Not that it is entirely accurate. "Life casting does make you look older," said a far fresher-faced Quinn.

For all his fame as a pioneer animator, Len Lye is probably best known in his native New Zealand for his kinetic sculptures. There are a few YouTube videos that demonstrate the kinetic sculptures, including some like this, Kinetic Sculptures, with Lye himself talking about the work.

I like this one best though -

As a film animator, Len Lye drew, painted, scratched, and printed directly onto the motion picture film itself. This film is called Trade Tattoo, made in 1937, and it represents his most complex mix of style, image, music and message. It's my favorite of Lye's films.

Len Lye purists don't tend to mention Trade Tattoo, as the commercial 'message' is more fully integrated into the film. They prefer to show the ones that either just show the message as a throwaway at the end or the later films that are purely abstract.

Colour Box is probably his most famous film, and is always included in screenings of Lye's works. Made in 1935
