A treasure hunter has unearthed the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold ever found, in a find archaeologists have said may be even more significant than the discovery of a burial ship at Sutton Hoo 70 years ago.

Undisturbed bronze age royal crypt found in Syria

A team of German and Syrian archaeologists have located an undisturbed Bronze Age crypt under the former royal palace of Qatna in Syria, the University of Tübingen announced on Monday.

The crypt 3,500-year-old tomb contains a significant number of artefacts, as well as human bones.

At its height, Qatna was home to some 20,000 and a major trading crossroads from Mesopotamia to the Mediterranean and from Anatolia to Egypt. Qatna's enemies burned down the city in 1340 B.C.

Alongside the bones, archeologists found ceramic pots, as well as containers made from alabaster and granite, originally from Egypt. Gold jewels and the stone sculpture of a monkey were also found.

Thirty skulls within suggest that a corresponding number of people were buried there, and bones stacked in groups among splinters of wood may indicate a secondary burial

A new royal Maya tomb emerges from the tunnels beneath Copán's Acropolis

The Maya kings of Copán were not interested in moving mountains. They preferred to build their own, like the pyramid now known as Temple 16

Inside an excavation tunnel deep beneath the pyramid's surface, the face of the sun-king scowls at me from the wall of his temple

The sun-king's face adorns the first floor of Rosalila, a temple that was once painted a brilliant, bloody shade of red. His image wears a headdress of red, yellow, and green plumage--the feathers of a quetzal and a macaw--and curving lines in his eyes associate him with depictions of the sun god

The Maya words for each of these sculptural elements spells his name, K'inich Yax K'uk' Mo', which translates as "Sun-Eyed Resplendent Quetzal Macaw," the first king of Copán.

Forty-three feet below the floor of the temple, the sun-king's tomb was found inside one of the first buildings to be constructed on the Acropolis. Beginning around A.D. 426

Aug. 6, 2009 -- The remains of a man who could be the world's oldest known paralysis victim have been unearthed by Australian bio-archaeologists in northern Vietnam.

remains are between 3,500 and 4,000 years old and belong to an adult male who died around age 25.

the young man suffered from paraplegia or possibly quadriplegia due to a rare disorder called Klippel-Feil Syndrome, a condition involving congenital fusion of the spine.

The disorder, which can make sufferers look as if they have a short neck, is also often associated with various complications.

In the case of M9, posture-related complications forced his head to tilt to his right side, a condition known as torticollis. M9 also likely had problems chewing.

NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter will photograph Apollo landing sites, and try to determine if the flag planted by the Apollo 11 crew is still standing. “We need to know where our material culture resides on the moon. Many parts and pieces of our time, certainly in the era of the early robotics on the moon, are missing from the database,” said Beth O’Leary of New Mexico State University

35,000 year old flutes could have aided Neanderthals' decline

Thirty-five thousands years before the likes of Kraftwerk, Nena and Rammstein, the lands of Germany were resounding to a very different sort of musical sound - tunes emanating from flutes made of bird bones and ivory. These thin tubes have recently been uncovered by Nicholas Conard from the University of Tubingen and they're some of the oldest musical instruments ever discovered.

The ancient flutes hail from the Hohle Fels Cave in Germany's Ach Valley, a veritable treasure trove of prehistoric finds that have also yielded the oldest known figurative art. The flutes were found less than a metre away. Together, these finds show that Europeans had a rich artistic and musical culture as far back as the Upper Palaeolithic period, some 35,000 years ago.

Cultural traditions such as music could have played a small part in cementing large social networks

even contributed to our ancestors expanding their range at the cost of the more culturally conservative Neanderthals, who lived in the same area

Egyptian archaeologists have unearthed carvings at four ancient temples in the Sinai peninsula which they hope will shed fresh light on one of the most obscure periods of Pharaonic history.

Rare inscriptions on the temples' walls relate to the Hyksos -- Asiatic peoples who invaded Egypt during the 12th dynasty (1991-1802 BC) and ruled for more than a century from their Nile Delta capital, Avaris.

Ensconced in a skintight coffin made of linen and plaster for almost 3,000 years, the issue's "cover girl" is also the highlight of an exhibition, The Life of Meresamun: A Temple Singer in Ancient Egypt, on view at the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute Museum through December 6.
