In January of 1954, just a year before his death, Albert Einstein wrote the following letter to philosopher Erik Gutkind after reading his book, 'Choose Life: The Biblical Call to Revolt'. Apparently Einstein had only read the book due to repeated recommendation by their mutual friend Luitzen Egbertus Jan Brouwer. The letter was bought at auction in May 2008, for £170,000. Unsurprisingly, one of the unsuccessful bidders was Richard Dawkins.

The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weakness, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still purely primitive, legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this. ... For me the Jewish religion like all other religions is an incarnation of the most childish superstition.

<clipSource>http://www.lettersofnote.com/2009/10/word-god-is-product-of-human-weakness.html</clipSource>

Putting the 'Fundament' back into 'Fundamentalism'

clipped by: JohnWaterman
clipper's remarks: International Blasphemy Day

Clip Source: blog.newhumanist.org.uk

Today, September 30th, is International Blasphemy Day, organised by the Center for Inquiry as part of their Campaign for Free Expression:

"Blasphemy Day International is a campaign seeking to establish September 30th as a day to promote free speech and to stand up in a show of solidarity for the freedom to challenge, criticize, and satirize religion without fear of murder, litigation, or reprisal. It's always a revelation when you see something coming from another mind that has so many points of commonality with your own thinking. Part 3 held the most significance for me.

Clip Source: www.examiner.com

Becoming atheist with regret (part 1)

A friend told me last week that he recently, and suddenly, became an atheist - and wished he wasn't...

I had seen him move from conservative Christian, to a Christian with a more liberal belief about scripture, to something even more general over the past few years. He said he was thinking a few days ago and realized he didn't even really believe the last bit, and let it go.

What intrigued me most was his expression that he wished he wasn't an atheist. He said he'd like to believe, but just didn't really see any supporting logic that would make such a thing reasonable to believe. I asked him, what exactly he'd like to believe. Turns out it wasn't so much about God, as it is the belief in immortality.
