Planck prepares to go super-cold

The observatory's detectors have been chilled to a staggering minus 273.05C - just a tenth of a degree above what scientists term "absolute zero."

Launched in May, Planck will survey the "oldest light" in the Universe.

Although laboratory set-ups have got closer to absolute zero than Planck, researchers say it is unlikely there is anywhere in space currently that is colder than their astronomical satellite.

This frigidity should ensure the bolometers will be at their most sensitive as they scan the sky for the target light.

Earlier this year in Houston, Texas, the viral marketing expert Kevin Dolan and his son Sean had an idea to help the homeless: select and focus on one rough-sleeper, offer them assistance and then, with their co-operation and consent, record their story for a new website

They approached Tim Edwards, homeless for five years and living under a bridge. He was amused by their plan, and from February this year, Tim's progress was broadcast on the website. Tim is a highly sympathetic subject, or rather collaborator, whose eloquence, intelligence and absence of self-pity are proving useful for his many webcasts. Almost two million people worldwide have watched Edwards's journey from the streets to stability via rehab and a reunion with family. He has suffered from depression and drink problems, confessing to having made some "bad choices", and tells us about his life.

Gorgeous and intriguing; macro shots of soap bubbles perfectly captured by artist Bogdan Chesaru. And I can't help but agree that the name of his website is also a good description of his work: a kind of magic.

“A Kind of Magic” gallery depicts the natural iridescent colors you see when light catches a clear soap bubble.

Simply put, I photograph light interference on soap film - a physical phenomenon that surrounds our everyday lives and yet it goes largely unnoticed.

As seen through the camera lens, a vibrant scenery of shapes and patterns, swirling and dancing on the edge of time, arouse both the eye and mind with a sensation of spatial elasticity. Driven by a strong minimalist impulse, my work is a venture into this playground of the most faint air currents, molecular forces and gravity’s relentless pull.

It seems the one thing climate change sceptics are certain of is uncertainty, in particular how uncertainty in the predictions of climate models fatally undermines their legitimacy.

So the recent revelation of the UK government's projections of global warming through to 2080 was met, predictably, with some cynicism by the deniers.

the response of climate sceptics was to say that the error bars in the projections made them worthless

Never mind that the level of uncertainty about mean temperature increase, sea level rise and seasonal rainfall was dealt with in painstaking and meticulous detail in the report.

But uncertainty is not an enemy of science that must be conquered – it is the stimulus that drives science forward

The good news is that scientists are particularly adept at acknowledging, identifying and modelling it

There is one crucial uncertainty, however, that cannot be captured in any climate model: the extent to which action is taken to cut the emissions of greenhouse gases

Physics discussion ends in skateboard attack

A homeless man is on trial in San Mateo County on charges that he smacked a fellow transient in the face with a skateboard as the victim was engaged in a conversation about quantum physics, authorities said Wednesday.

Jason Everett Keller, 40, allegedly accosted another homeless man, Stephan Fava, on the 200 block of Grand Avenue in South San Francisco about 1:45 p.m. March 30.

At the time, Fava was chatting with an acquaintance, who is also homeless, about "quantum physics and the splitting of atoms," according to prosecutors.

Keller joined in the conversation and, for reasons unknown, got upset, authorities said. He picked up his skateboard and hit Fava in the face with it, splitting his lip, prosecutors said.

Enceladus experiences tidal contortions as it orbits its parent planet

This energy is producing a "hotspot" at the satellite's southern pole

Nasa's Cassini spacecraft has obtained strong evidence that Saturn's tiny moon Enceladus retains liquid water.

The probe has detected sodium salts in the vicinity of the satellite, which appear to spew from its south pole.

Liquid water that is in prolonged contact with rock will leach out sodium - in exactly the same way as Earth's oceans have become salty over time.

Scientists tell Nature magazine that the liquid water may reside in caverns just below the surface of the moon.

If confirmed, it is a stunning result. It means the Saturnian satellite may be one of the most promising places in the Solar System to search for signs of extraterrestrial life.

Thirty-five thousands years before the likes of Kraftwerk, Nena and Rammstein, the lands of Germany were resounding to a very different sort of musical sound - tunes emanating from flutes made of bird bones and ivory. These thin tubes have recently been uncovered by Nicholas Conard from the University of Tubingen and they're some of the oldest musical instruments ever discovered.

The ancient flutes hail from the Hohle Fels Cave in Germany's Ach Valley, a veritable treasure trove of prehistoric finds that have also yielded the oldest known figurative art. The flutes were found less than a metre away. Together, these finds show that Europeans had a rich artistic and musical culture as far back as the Upper Palaeolithic period, some 35,000 years ago.

Cultural traditions such as music could have played a small part in cementing large social networks

even contributed to our ancestors expanding their range at the cost of the more culturally conservative Neanderthals, who lived in the same area
