Santur ist eine Art Zither mit 72 Saiten. Aus ihr wurden das mittelalterliche Psalterium, das Zymbalum und später das Klavier entwickelt.

Bandleader and composer Duke Ellington considered his Sacred Concerts as the most important thing he ever did.

Ellington's choral music comes from what he called his Sacred Concerts. Ellington wrote this music late in life, as he was thinking about his mortality and becoming more spiritual.

Between 1965 and his death in 1974, Ellington expressed his religious beliefs in performances of his three Sacred Concerts at cathedrals and churches throughout the U.S. and Europe, including a 1968 appearance at the Hennepin Ave. United Methodist Church in Minneapolis.

Ellington's Sacred Concerts were entertaining, jazz-based, religious musical revues featuring the full Ellington band along with dancers, choirs, and gospel singers.

He was a very spiritual man, but his music is an expression of all the sides of Duke Ellington

He didn't compartmentalize. That's the beauty of his music. In his sacred music there is the profane. And in his profane music there is the sacred.

For the mediaeval "Cathares" AMOR (love) was a positive word and ROMA (Rome) as a symbol for power and oppression a negative one. Putting these words into one these musicians want to create a tension between good and bad, happy and sad, longing and content, progressive and conservative, peaceful and vehement,... It's in all these interactions that they situate their music.

In the 12th and 13th centuries, the Cathars formed an important spiritual movement. Averse to all dogmas, they aimed at elevated human values such as austerity, immaterialism and noblesse de coeur.

They were persecuted by the Inquisition for heresy, and finally brought down in Montségur, a town in the French Pyrenees.

Record Industry Goes After Personal Use

Despite more than 20,000 lawsuits filed against music fans in the years since they started finding free tunes online rather than buying CDs from record companies, the recording industry has utterly failed to halt the decline of the record album or the rise of digital music sharing.

In legal documents in its federal case against Jeffrey Howell, a Scottsdale, Ariz., man who kept a collection of about 2,000 music recordings on his personal computer, the industry maintains that it is illegal for someone who has legally purchased a CD to transfer that music into his computer.

The industry's lawyer in the case, Ira Schwartz, argues in a brief filed earlier this month that the MP3 files Howell made on his computer from legally bought CDs are "unauthorized copies" of copyrighted recordings.

We shall describe recently discovered generative principles of musical thought which unify musical microstructure with structure, giving rise to musical integrity

We are here concerned about what these principles can tell us about musical thought and about thought itself.
Musical thought is a particular kind of thought. It has much in common with non-musical thought and also much that is specific. Non-musical thought involves verbal language and/or non-verbal processes; it is clearly possible to a considerable degree to think without language. Does it make sense to ask what is left of musical thought if one removes musical language from it? In both musical as in non-musical thought, the largest portions of its processes are not conscious, and so this question involves unconsciously operating generative grammars. Evidence for this grammar is found in musical microstructure.

Liu Fang is most well-known for her virtuosic and expressive interpretation of traditional pipa and guzheng music from the classical and folkloric traditions. Celebrated in the press as being "one of the greatest virtuosos", "the empress of pipa" (L'actualité, 2001) is able to transmit in an erudite and significant way the beauty and the richness of this ancient music as well as the subtle sonorities of the instruments by the power and sensibility of her play.

Liu Fang plays pipa (Chinese lute or guitar) and guzheng (Chinese zither or harp). She was born in Kunming (China) and started her music career at early age.

Liu Fang's repertory includes Chinese music of both classical and folk traditions, contemporary music for pipa and guzheng solo, compositions for pipa with string quartet, and pipa concertos with orchestra, as well as free style improvizations. Liu Fang also collaborates with master musicians from various cultural backgrounds and musicial traditions. She has received a number of grants from the Canada Council of the Arts and from Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec for various projects. In 2001, she received the prestigious Future Generations Millennium Prize.

Some people say that art and music are an impractical luxury for schools, given the hyper competitive demands of "globalization" that require a strong background in science and math.

Laying aside the wrong-headed workforce-training assumptions behind such an instrumentalist educational philosophy, another way of looking at it is: given the "new economic" reality -- where workers won't have long-term jobs or careers but multiple jobs and careers -- the advantage goes to those with nimble minds and creative intelligence; not the proficient test-takers our education factories are producing.

Improving the achievement gap? Raising test scores? Preventing kids from dropping out? We need more music education, not less. The math is simple.

Scientists might not be sure exactly how it works, but musically and artistically inclined students are better readers and mathematicians.

let's consider the question: what does music have to do with improving education?

Going back to Plato and Aristotle, music has been considered one the "Four Pillars of Learning."

Plato said: "The decisive importance of education in poetry and music: rhythm and harmony sink deep into the recesses of the soul and take the strongest hold there. And when reason comes, he (the student) will greet her as a friend with whom his education has made him long familiar."

Aristotle said: "We become a certain quality in our characters on account of music."

Even Allan Bloom said: "Music is at the center of education, both for giving passions their due and for preparing the soul for the unhampered use of reason."
