clipper's remarks: Is it a joke of history that before there was the states of Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, Syria, etc there was Palestine? Now they all exist and Palestine doesn't yet.

You will read that there never was a Palestine from a certain quarter and how can you miss what you never had. How you know they are lying! They'll say that as they are all Arabs that there's enough room for them all. It's like saying that the Scots Welsh and Irish are all Celts and one state would do them all! Yes, there was a time when such thinking was regarded as valid. If we had the Age of Imperialism back then the Brits might validly have a claim on the USA and most of the rest of the world.

In the present imperialism, if the existent holder of the gunboat diplomacy role, the USA, decided to sort out Palestine's present difficulties it could in a breath. Hopefully in a more honourable fashion that the last gunboat holder did.

In my mind's eye I see the President of the State or the Prime Minister addressing a special extraordinary session of the Knesset and making a historic speech on the following lines:

On behalf of the State of Israel and all its citizens, I address today the sons and daughters of the Palestinian people, wherever they are.

The Czech government has apologized to the Germans for the mass expulsion of the German population at the end of World War II. Germany, of course, has apologized to the Jews for the unspeakable crimes of the Holocaust.

Australia has apologized to the Aborigines. And even in Israel, a feeble effort was made to heal a grievous domestic wound, when Ehud Barak apologized to the Oriental Jews

In the early 1990s, a chance meeting between Mr. Barenboim and the late Palestinian-born writer and Columbia University professor Edward Said in a London hotel lobby led to an intensive friendship that has had both political and musical repercussions. These two men, who should have been poles apart politically, discovered in that first meeting, which lasted for hours, that they had similar visions of Israeli/Palestinian possible future cooperation. They decided to continue their dialogue and to collaborate on musical events to further their shared vision of peaceful co-existence in the Middle East. This led to Mr. Barenboim's first concert on the West Bank, a piano recital at the Palestinian Birzeit University in February 1999, and to a workshop for young musicians from the Middle East that took place in Weimar, Germany, in August 1999.

Said passed away in 2003 but his partnership with Daniel Barenboim lives on through

projects targeted at young Arabs and Israelis.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel announced plans on Sunday to build hundreds of new homes in an area of the occupied West Bank the Israeli government considers part of Jerusalem, despite U.S. and Palestinian calls to halt settlement expansion.

The announcement came two days before Prime Minister Ehud Olmert sets off for Washington for a three-day visit where he will meet U.S. President George W. Bush.

Housing Minister Zeev Boim instructed his office to publish a tender to build an additional 763 housing units in Pisgat Zeev and 121 housing units at Har Homa, an area Palestinians refer to as Jabal Abu Ghneim.

Olmert later praised the housing plan at a meeting of his Kadima faction.

Both sites are located on lands captured by Israel during the 1967 Middle East war, and were incorporated into the municipal borders of Jerusalem in an act not recognized internationally.

das im Israel der 50er und 60er Jahre vorherrschende Gefühl dem deutschen Volk gegenüber folgendermaßen: "Nach dem Ausbruch von Schmerz und Trauer erhob sich eine Woge von Hass in Israel gegen die Urheber dieser Verbrechen und gegen diejenigen, die sie hatten geschehen lassen. [...] Die Juden machten keinen Unterschied zwischen Deutschen und Nationalsozialisten. [...] Einzig und allein die Tatsache zählte, dass Millionen Juden in der schrecklichsten, niederträchtigsten und grausamsten Weise von Deutschen ermordet worden waren, die es ohne Widerspruch geschehen ließen. Die "Kollektivschuld" des ganzen deutschen Volkes lag in ihren Augen offen und unabweislich zutage. Die Konsequenz dieser Einstellung hieß damals für jeden Israeli: niemals wieder Beziehungen zu Deutschen, niemals Versöhnung."

The group "Parhessia", named after the Old Hebrew word for "public", is raising something of a stir in Israel.

It was founded two years ago by Israeli writers, artists and teachers with the objective of establishing a new language for the Israeli public sector, throwing a critical light on the ethnic, religious and social complexity of the country's society.

Parhessia's most recent high-profile initiative is the result of a collaboration with the Israeli association "Zochrot". This group has been working for some years on informing the Israeli public about the Nakba, the Palestinian trauma of flight and expulsion in 1948, and its consequences – in Hebrew, with the aim of breaking down the general taboo concerning the war and its outcomes.

Jidisch ist das jiddische Wort für »jüdisch« und stammt aus dem mittelhochdeutschen judesch, das letztlich »judäisch« bedeutet (siehe jid). Im Deutschen ist das Wort jiddisch erst auf dem Umweg über Amerika populär geworden: Bis zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts hieß das Jiddische in Deutschland offiziell Juden-Deutsch.

Mehr als 10 Millionen Menschen sprachen vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg Jiddisch als Muttersprache. Von den sechs Millionen ermordeten Juden sprach die große Mehrheit Jiddisch. Die Nationalsozialisten haben nicht nur die Menschen, sondern mit ihnen auch die Sprache fast vollkommen ausgelöscht. Die Wiederbelebung des Jiddischen nach 1945 war schwierig, aus den unterschiedlichsten Gründen. Heute gibt es nicht nur in Israel, sondern auch in Europa ein neues Interesse an der Sprache.

Aufs Jiddische sind fünfhundert Jahre lang Grabreden gehalten worden, und vielleicht dauert es noch fünfhundert Jahre, bis es verschwindet.

Bis vor hundert Jahren war kein Hebräisch in Jerusalem oder sonst in Israel zu hören, weder in der Stadt noch auf den Dörfern. Es war die Zeit der Türkenherrschaft, und man sprach türkisch und arabisch.

Die jüdische Bevölkerung verständigte sich auf jiddisch, sefardisch oder in anderen Idiomen. Sie benutzte dazu kein Hebräisch, denn dieses galt ihnen als heilige Sprache, die für das Lesen der Bibel und der anderen heiligen Bücher bestimmt war, zum Beten und Thorastudium, in den Jeschiwoth und bei besonderen Anlässen, wie etwa beim Schabath, den jüdischen Feiertagen und der Bar-Mizvvah.

1881 wanderte aus Rußland

Elieser Ben-Jehuda zusammen mit seiner Frau Debora ein. Sie kamen mit dem Ziel ins Land, das Hebräische wiederzubeleben, zum täglichen Gebrauch

Die Familie Ben-Jehuda wuchs und zählte elf Kinder, und so entstand die erste Hebräisch sprechende Familie seit der Zerstörung des zweiten Tempels.

Am 14. Mai vor 60 Jahren wurde der Staat Israel gegründet. Eine Demokratie, bis heute die einzige im Nahen Osten, die den Namen verdient, trotz permanenter Bedrohung von außen. Ob sie diese Aufbauleistung der Israelis bewunderten, fragten IP und Forsa die Bundesbürger. Die Antwort war eindeutig: Nur 13 Prozent äußern Bewunderung. 57 Prozent sehen Israel wegen seines Dauerkonflikts mit den Palästinensern kritisch. Im Gegensatz zu den Amerikanern, die sich bei Umfragen regelmäßig mit Zweidrittelmehrheit proisraelisch zeigen, hegen die Deutschen für den nach dem deutschen Massenmord an sechs Millionen Juden gegründeten Judenstaat offenbar wenig verständnisvolle, gar freundschaftliche Gefühle. Warum?

Was dabei auf der Strecke zu bleiben scheint, ist das Interesse an Israels sehr komplexer Lage, am Anteil der Palästinenser an diesem Konflikt, an seiner Historie, am Kampf zwischen Moderaten und Fanatikern auf beiden Seiten, am Zwang zu sehr schmerzhaften Kompromissen

Israelische Soldaten brechen das Schweigen

Voller Idealismus traten sie ihren Militärdienst an, überzeugt davon, Israel könne sich nur durch Militärpräsenz in den palästinensischen Gebieten gegen Krieg und Terror wehren. Sie wollten "gute Besatzer", moralisch handelnde Soldaten, sein, doch Menschenrechtsverletzungen und Übergriffe durch die israelische Armee sind in Gaza und im Westjordanland an der Tagesordnung.

Mit der Organisation "Shovrim Shtika" wollen sie publik machen, was sie erlebten - der Alltag jenseits des Sperrwalls ist in Israel bis heute ein Tabu. Doch die jungen Soldaten wollen nicht nur die politische Situation vor Ort anprangern, sondern auch zeigen, wie Menschen durch einen Militärapparat zu dem werden, was einer der Soldaten als "Puppets on a String" (Marionetten) bezeichnet.

“Who is the enemy?” asks Avichai Sharon. “I never saw the enemy. I saw society. I was three years fighting society in Palestinian cities.”

Avital Ben Chorin was born in the German city of Eisenach, but found a new home in Israel. The Bedouin Abu Sitta family, on the other hand, lost its home when the state of Israel was created.

Avital Ben Chorin is an elegant, 85-year-old lady

At the tender age of 13, she emigrated to Palestine with a group of young people and without her parents. She found accommodation in a home for young German Jews in Kirjat Bialik near Haifa, a town established by German immigrants.

"We were thrilled to be allowed to help build up the country," she recalls, over 70 years after her emigration.

For Fawaz Abu Sitta, 14 May 1948 marked the beginning of his family’s expulsion from their tribal land

He grew up believing that he was a refugee who would one day return to his tribal homeland. Although he lived in Khan Yunis and went to school there, he felt that his real home was on the other side of the barbed wire fence in the state of Israel.
