The Vatican and leading Iranian theologians have reached agreement on a declaration on "Faith and Reason in Christianity and Islam." The paper sends out an important signal in terms of easing religious and political tensions.

In the declaration both sides emphasized their belief that religion is "intrinsically non-violent". Neither reason nor faith, they stressed, can justify violence.

The discussions in Rome brought together representatives of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and a delegation from the Islamic Culture and Relations Organisation in Tehran.

the clear affirmation of the non-violence of faith and reason and the condemnation of attempts to justify violence in their name constituted a "courageous" act on the part of the Muslim signatories.

I'd like to suggest a very simple strategy for American liberals: Get mean. Stop policing the language and start using it to hurt our enemies. American liberals are so busy purging their speech of any words that might offend anyone that they have no notion of using language to cause some salutary pain.

Something like, "There are two kinds of Republicans: millionaires and suckers."

The American people are the beneficiaries of centuries of serious Leftist violence, starting with the American Revolution and climaxing in the Civil War. Without brave Leftist warriors slaughtering British and Confederate soldiers in large numbers, the whole tradition of American liberalism would not exist.

And we are the sufferers from the most disastrous wimp-out in recent American history: Carter's debacle in response to the taking of American hostages in Iran in 1979. Whenever western governments mention weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and Muslims in the same breath, the western media immediately breaks into a wild frenzy warning its people that a catastrophic event of epic proportions is about to unfold.

Old European fables of Muslims spreading Islam by the sword are reinvented to convey the impression that Muslims are extremely dangerous, highly irresponsible and pay scant regard to human life. Hence the mantra of disarming Muslim countries of WMD has become the rallying cry of the West directed against the Muslim world.

In some cases the arguments are extended to justify the West's ongoing policy of regime change in Syria, Iran and perhaps Pakistan. However, a close study of Islamic rule in the past contradicts the popular western myth that Muslims are bloodthirsty people anxious to wipe out the rest of mankind in the name of Islam.

The same however, cannot be said about the West.

A new movie in Iran depicts the life of Jesus from an Islamic perspective. "The Messiah," which some consider as Iran's answer to Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ," won an award at Rome's Religion Today Film Festival, for generating interfaith dialogue. The movie will be adapted into a television series, shown on Iranian TV later this year.

LS: What are the key differences between Jesus through Islam's eyes and Jesus through the traditional Christian perspective?

NT: We are talking about the same beautiful man, the same beautiful prophet, the same divine person sent from heaven. In the Koran, it emphasizes maybe three main points: about the birth, about the fact that he was not the son of God, and then, that he was not crucified. The rest is [the same] Jesus ... the sermons, and the miracles, and the political situation.

In most societies, the decision to wear a headscarf, or to take it off, is a personal choice.

Yet, the real problem is not in the decision a woman makes, but in the politicization of that decision. The problem lies in the moral inconsistency and the use of double standards in addressing an issue concerning individual choice and freedom of expression. The only morally defensible position is denying the state the right to either force or prohibit people to follow practices they genuinely believe to be required by their religious traditions, particularly when these practices do not violate the rights of others.

The argument to ban the hijab often rests on a paternalistic attitude derived from the dominant position enjoyed by the group to which the person who advocate the hijab ban belongs. For decades now, anti-hijab writers refused to consider it as a personal choice and an individual right, protected under international humanitarian law.

Here we have a lot of very rich and powerful people producing and directing a worldwide Hollywood version of the end of the world, with extreme real world consequences.

These end-timers have great influence over the U.S. government's foreign policy. They are thick with the Republican leadership. At a recent conference in Washington, congressional leader Roy Blunt, for example, has said that their work is "part of God's plan." Utopian fantasies have long transfixed the human race. Yet today a much rarer fantasy has become popular in the United States. Millions of Americans, the richest people in history, have a death wish. They are the new "Armageddonites," fundamentalist evangelicals who have moved from forecasting Armageddon to actually trying to bring it about.

Most journalists find it difficult to take seriously that tens of millions of Americans, filled with fantasies of revenge and empowerment, long to leave a world they despise. These Armageddonites believe that they alone will get a quick, free pass when they are "raptured" to paradise, no good deeds necessary, not even a day of judgment. Ironically, they share this utopian fantasy with a group that they often castigate, namely fundamentalist Muslims who believe that dying in battle also means direct access to Heaven.

Yasmin K. ist vor eineinhalb Jahren nach Deutschland geflohen, weil ihr im Iran die Steinigung drohte. Doch bisher verweigern die deutschen Behörden und Gerichte der Frau, die Frauen liebt, das Recht auf Asyl. Das bedeutet: Abschiebung.

Auf der Uni verliebt sich Yasmin in eine Kommilitonin. Auch das bleibt nicht verborgen. Yasmin fliegt von der Uni und wird nun von den Eltern gedrängt, einen Mann zu heiraten. Was sie tut. Aber sie hält dennoch die Beziehung zu ihrer Freundin aufrecht. Im Oktober 2005 stürmen die Sittenwächter die Geburtstagsfeier der Freundin und verhaften alle Anwesenden.

Nur Dank der Beziehungen ihres wohlhabenden Vaters kommt Yasmin frei. Der Vater ist es auch, der die Flucht seiner lesbischen Tochter organisiert. Über die Türkei kommt Yasmin K., die inzwischen in Abwesenheit zum Tode verurteilt ist, Anfang 2006 nach Berlin und beantragt Asyl.

Doch beim Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge (BAMF) glaubt man der jungen Frau nicht.

Turkish Islam has arrived in today's world, writes Zafer Senocak in his essay. But, he says, the Islam of today still lacks a philosophy, and it avoids the fundamental issues

Were Muslims not always primarily committed to their holy book, the Koran, so that the best they could be would be Trojan horses in society, disguised as democrats?

The Koran includes a large number of rules for the ordering of a clan-based society. The relationship between the sexes is patriarchal, the criminal justice code is martial. The holy book of the Muslims does not just include theological and ethical principles, it includes rules for daily life, and provides the Muslim community with guidelines which it must follow when it organises the way people live together.

In Turkey, more democracy means more influence for Islam.

But what kind of an Islam is it? It is not the same kind of Islam which the Mullahs preach in the mosques of Pakistan, Iran and the Arab countries.
