Against the background of these existing contacts between the Vatican and Muslim authorities, one can look forward with anticipation to the first meeting of the Catholic-Muslim Forum, scheduled for early November. The forum was founded following a meeting in the Vatican in March this year, which itself was the result of a letter written in October 2007 by 138 Muslim scholars from 43 countries to the pope and other representatives of the Christian churches.

The topic of the forthcoming meeting is to be "Love of God and neighbour." The Vatican-Shiite dialogue is also set to continue: another colloquium is planned for two years time in Tehran.

The statement was seen, unavoidably, in the context of a lecture on Faith and Reason given by Pope Benedict XVI in Regensburg last year. That lecture began with the thesis that both faith and reason are gifts given by God to humanity. That was followed by the proposition that faith and reason were not contradictory: faith might sometimes go beyond reason, but could never be directed against reason.

The joint statement at the end of the commission's most recent meeting in February in Cairo declared that all religions respect "the dignity and honour of the human person without consideration of race, colour, religion or conviction".

Both sides committed themselves to promote "true respect for religions, beliefs, religious symbols, holy Books,"

Van Dyck's early portraits of Margaret show a flirtatious young woman with a brilliant complexion, dark brown hair, and brown eyes. His fascination with her is attested to by the number of times he chose to paint her. The Van Dyck paintings for which she modelled are many and varied and include mythological subjects, such as Cupid and Psyche [...] and a lost portrait of Margaret as Flora, which survives in a preparatory sketch [...], as well as religious works, including two Lamentations (Alte Pinakothek, Munich; Royal Museum of Arts, Antwerp), for which Margaret served as model for the Virgin Mary. Her impact on Van Dyck's art can be measured both by the length of time she acted as his model and by the number of paintings for which she is known to have posed. Twelve of these paintings, either originals or contemporary copies, survive, including five portraits. No other seventeenth-century woman without substantive ties to the aristocracy was painted as often.

Lemon, Margaret (b. c.1614), artist's model, was English by birth, but the variant spelling of her name, Lemans, suggests that she may have had Flemish ancestry; the approximate date of birth is based on her apparent age in Van Dyck's earliest paintings of her.

Probably still in her teens, she appears to have been a courtesan when Van Dyck made her his mistress, during his second stay in England (1632–41).

The Czech engraver Wenceslaus Hollar, who was not liked by Van Dyck, famously described Margaret as a woman of explosive temperament, who once in a fit of jealous rage attempted to end her lover's painting career by biting off his thumb

Van Dyck himself remarked on her financial extravagance

Yet her beauty, vivacity, and musical ability seem to have offset the more combustible aspects of her nature. She played the viola da gamba, and Van Dyck painted her at the instrument on at least two occasions.

These fears and the religious responses to them have been a key to the political success of the religious right in recent decades.

When religious language enters the political arena in this way, as an end in itself, it always sends the same symbolic message:

You are not adrift in a sea of moral chaos. Elect me

Should we turn the political arena into a stage to dramatize our quest for moral certainty?

You will find the saying in Petronius's Satyricon. There's also a similar, more pessimistic saying from Seneca: non semper Saturnalia erunt, "It will not always be Saturnalia-time." In other words: party-time will come to an end, sooner or later. Some people, of course, are on a kind of permanent vacation; semper Saturnalia agunt, as in today's saying.

The Roman festival of Saturnalia is connected with Saturn, the Roman god of the harvest and of agriculture. We preserve his name today in the weekday "Saturday" (Latin dies Saturni), the only one of the days of the week to have kept its Roman name in English. Saturn supposedly ruled the world during the "Golden Age" of complete peace and perfect prosperity.

The festival of Saturnalia was originally celebrated on December 17, but it later extended into a week-long festival due to its enormous popularity with the Roman people. During the Saturnalia, many of the typical social rules were reversed

Here we have a lot of very rich and powerful people producing and directing a worldwide Hollywood version of the end of the world, with extreme real world consequences.

Actor Stephen Baldwin, the youngest member of the famous Baldwin brothers, is no longer playing Pauly Shore's sidekick in comedy masterpieces like Biodome. He has a much more serious calling these days.

Baldwin became a right-wing, born-again Christian after the 9/11 attacks, and now is the star of Operation Straight Up (OSU), an evangelical entertainment troupe that actively proselytizes among active-duty members of the US military. As an official arm of the Defense Department's America Supports You program, OSU plans to mail copies of the controversial apocalyptic video game, Left Behind: Eternal Forces to soldiers serving in Iraq. OSU is also scheduled to embark on a "Military Crusade in Iraq" in the near future.

"We feel the forces of heaven have encouraged us to perform multiple crusades that will sweep through this war torn region," OSU declares on its website about its planned trip to Iraq. "We'll hold the only religious crusade of its size in the dangerous land of Iraq."

Plus, in the game screens appear, between different levels of play, with short, helpful essays such as one that explains how the Theory of Evolution is clearly impossible.

The United States Pentagon Chaplain likes "Left Behind: Eternal Forces" and the religious warfare the game depicts so much that the Chaplain's Office is sponsoring a prayer breakfast in the Pentagon's main executive dining room this Friday morning, where the founder of an apocalyptic fundamentalist "extreme sports" ministry that will distribute the game to US troops in Iraq (thoughtfully included in care packages along with baby wipes) will address top officials of the most powerful military on Earth.
