Several hundred women have staged a rare demonstration in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar calling for the release of a kidnapped US aid worker.

The woman aid worker, Cyd Mizell, and her Afghan driver were abducted on Saturday by unidentified gunmen.

Rallies by women are rare in Afghanistan, and all the more so in the conservative southern city of Kandahar where 49-year-old Ms Mizell and her driver Muhammad Hadi were kidnapped from a residential neighbourhood.

Some 500 to 600 women, many wearing the burqa, gathered in a wedding hall on Tuesday for prayers and speeches calling on government officials to work for the captives' release.

Columbus (WTVM) -- Is your iPod really an iPod? You might want to double-check, in the wake of a consumer affairs settlement announced Monday in Atlanta.

The Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs settled with the operators of Ipod World kiosks at several malls, including Macon Mall. The stands sold Apple lookalikes, which were *not* real iPods and Nanos. In one case, an investigator received a receipt for a "Shffle" -- with the U left out, which would make it the Apple product's name.

The settlement requires owner Shay Zvi Lahav to stop using Ipod in store names and web sites such as Accessories2000.com. The managers also must pay the state $20,000 in investigative fees, and provide full restitution for customers.

Despite more than 20,000 lawsuits filed against music fans in the years since they started finding free tunes online rather than buying CDs from record companies, the recording industry has utterly failed to halt the decline of the record album or the rise of digital music sharing.

In legal documents in its federal case against Jeffrey Howell, a Scottsdale, Ariz., man who kept a collection of about 2,000 music recordings on his personal computer, the industry maintains that it is illegal for someone who has legally purchased a CD to transfer that music into his computer.

The industry's lawyer in the case, Ira Schwartz, argues in a brief filed earlier this month that the MP3 files Howell made on his computer from legally bought CDs are "unauthorized copies" of copyrighted recordings.

All I want for Christmas is for Christians to listen to what Mike Huckabee says, rather than what the media say about him. The mainstream media keep flogging Huckabee for being a Christian, apparently unaware that this "God" fellow is testing through the roof in focus groups.

Huckabee is a "compassionate conservative" only in the sense that calling him a conservative is being compassionate.

He responded to my column last week -- pointing out that he is on record supporting the Supreme Court's sodomy-is-a-constitutional-right decision -- by saying that he was relying on the word of a caller to his radio show and didn't know the details of the case. Ironically, that's how most people feel about sodomy: They support it until they hear the details.

ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — A woman stabbed her husband with a kitchen knife following an argument that began when she accused him of opening a Christmas present early, authorities said Friday.

Authorities said Shawn Johnson called 911 just before 1 a.m. Wednesday to report that his wife had stabbed him. He told police that his wife started arguing with him over his opening a Christmas present, according to court records.

As the argument escalated, Misty Johnson accused her husband of having an affair, authorities said. Police found a marriage license in the couple's apartment stating they were married in late September.

CLEVELAND - Progressive Corp. is providing collision coverage for customers' dogs or cats at no additional premium cost. It will pay up to $500 if a customer's dog or cat is hurt or dies in a car accident.

"It's an unusual and interesting benefit," said Jean Salvatore, a senior vice president for the New York-based Insurance Information Institute. She was not aware of any other company offering a collision benefit for pets.

"Auto insurance is a very competitive market, and companies are always looking for ways to differentiate themselves. If this becomes popular, I'm sure others may look into it as well," Salvatore said.

An American soldier who was seriously wounded during a bomb attack in Iraq on Nov. 13 re-enlisted just hours after the ambush, telling Army officers he still had a job to do, the Army reported Monday.

Spc. Christopher Hoyt, an infantryman from California with the 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, based out of Fort Lewis, Wash., was injured after an improvised explosive device — or IED — exploded near him while he was out on a foot patrol near Zaganiyah, Iraq.

"He said he wasn’t finished," Hoyt’s battalion commander Lt. Col. Mark Landes said.

ATLANTA (AP) - The Georgia National Guard has promoted a woman to the rank of Brigadier General for the first time in its 275-year history.

Maria L. Britt of Gloversville, New York, graduated from West Point in 1983 as a Second Lieutenant and will assume her new rank on December first. She was recognized today at a ceremony at Fort McPherson in Atlanta.

She has held several assignments during her 24 years of military service and is currently assigned as the Chief of Staff of the Georgia Army National Guard. Britt has been selected for assignment as the Commanding General of the guard, effective later this month.

It is also the first time a woman will serve as a commander of the guard.

Members of the U.S. military have been vilified for their service and have faced criminal charges for battlefield decisions and congressional accusations of rampant "hate crimes." Now a California post office also has banned photographs of local soldiers who are defending their country.

"It's an emotional issue and people look at their post office as a hub of the community, but the post office is there to do postal business and it's not a place to post things or make displays,” postal spokesman Richard Maher told the San Luis Obispo Tribune.

The newspaper reported that "a customer" had complained that the display, which over the years has featured dozens of photos of troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, including many whose relatives use the Paso Robles Post Office, was pro-war.

MOSCOW - The mayor of a Siberian oil town has ordered his bureaucrats to stop using expressions such as "I don't know" and "I can't." Or look for another job.

Alexander Kuzmin, the 33-year-old mayor of Megion, has banned these and 25 other phrases as a way to make his administration more efficient, his spokeswoman said Tuesday.

"It's a suggestion to the staff that they should think before saying something," Oksana Shestakova said by telephone. "To say `I don't know' is the same as admitting your helplessness."

To reinforce the ban, a framed list of the banned expressions has been hanging on the wall next to Kuzmin's office for the past two weeks, Shestakova said.

Employee Accused of Poisoning Boss' Coffee

An employee at an electronics manufacturing company in Memphis, Tennessee, was arrested last week after he allegedly tried to taint a morning cup of coffee with an industrial paint thinner, MyFoxMemphis.com reported.

Police told MyFoxMemphis.com that Tommy Chiu, a worker at Sharp Manufacturing, was having a difficult time at work and wanted revenge on his supervisor, Debra Rose.

clipper's remarks: I bought this book because I know some of the people from the PD that were involved in this case. For the first time in my life, I threw a book in the trash unfinished. If you want a completely distorted view of the south - read it, because that is what you will get.

The author leaves the impression that Phenix City, AL is still the human waste disposal it was before martial law was ordered and it was cleaned up to be the respected community today. Rose lead the reader to believe all the blacks in Columbus, GA live below Macon Road and all the whites live north of it -- still. That is not true. And his superior European attitude about the US's way of dealing with our criminals is your typical "look down your nose" type.

As for the story of Gary - consider Mr. Rose is an advocate against the death penalty and believes that the oppression of the "black man" still goes on in the 'evil' south to this day. And eventually he ended up on Gary's legal team.

Mark Shelnutt has dined at the Big Eddy Club -- twice.

But that doesn't make him a conspirator in the case against Carlton Gary.

"Carlton Gary comes to Columbus in August 1977 and gets arrested in South Carolina in 1979, and everything happens in that time," Shelnutt said.

Rose was getting a free pass with the arguments in his book, Shelnutt said, and he spent more than 90 minutes detailing problems he believes run through its pages.

Shrouding the case beneath the looming specter of racism in the South is Rose's method of bypassing the case's facts, he said. It's ammunition to lead the reader away from the evidence -- ammunition that tells the reader that judges, attorneys, detectives and everyone involved in the case are part of the conspiracy. Rose casts the case in the light of racism, Shelnutt said, and the Big Eddy Club is its symbol.

"Nothing will ever change the fact that Carlton Gary is black and the victims are white," Shelnutt said.

Suicide attack on Afghan US firm

A suicide bomb attack on a US security firm convoy on the outskirts of the south Afghan city of Kandahar has killed 15 people and injured 20.

The bombing, the second suicide attack in Kandahar in as many days, took place on the main road heading west to the troubled province of Helmand.

At least six of the dead were civilians including women and children and at least three were security guards.

More than 3,700 people have been killed in Afghan violence this year.

Investigators use victim's cell phone to arrest six suspected in his death

Five of the six teenagers accused of slaying a Columbus man to steal his money and drugs, then setting his car on fire with his body inside, stood silently Friday in Columbus Recorder's Court as a detective described details leading to charges against them.

The sixth teen remains in an Augusta hospital, recovering from burns he allegedly sustained while setting the car afire in Flat Rock Park on Aug. 10.

As Jackson testified before Senior Recorder's Court Judge Michael Cielinski, he stood within arms reach of defendants James Stewart, 18, of 5248 Spinnaker Court; Frank Ravenel, 18, of 6 Trestlewood Court, Apt. 2; Vincent Clegg, 19, of 5405 Old Dominion Road; Michael Jarvis, 18, of 6309 Rockefeller Drive; and Kyle Klamer, 19, of 5202 Cunningham Drive.

MACON, Ga. — Some Macon residents have called for demonstrations and boycotts after the mayor of the central Georgia city formally reached out to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez with a declaration of solidarity.

Mayor Jack Ellis said the declaration, sent about two weeks ago by courier, was a message that local leaders can stand together despite disagreements at the highest reaches of government.

Former mayoral candidate David Corr said the mayor's comments were "an outrage."

"We should condemn Chavez as an enemy of liberty," Corr said. "In fact, we should also condemn Ellis as an enemy of liberty."

State Rep. Allen Peake, R-Macon, said the mayor's action "taints" the town.

"I think it's a negative for us," he told The Macon Telegraph. "We need to be doing things in this community that show the tremendous positives of Macon."
