Tim Goddard’s Star Wars LEGO Diorama

Tim Goddard’s Star Wars lego diorama “Rebel Attack” measures 30 by 50 inches (about 1:200 scale) and took almost a year to build. The diorama shows a Rebel attack on an Imperial base and mining installation.

Scan Toaster puts the power of 'miracle toast' into the hands of mere mortals

Industrial designer Sung Bae Chang has finally given us mortals the ability to do that which was once considered a bona-fide miracle. Using the "Scan Toaster," anyone with a PC and a USB cable can burn the likeness of the Blessed Virgin Mary (or any image or text that you wish) onto a slice of bread. The toaster utilizes a network of toasting "modules" -- hot wires that rotate within a 30 degree radius -- that burn the image or text you have selected onto the delicious slice of your choice. The peripheral is a finalist in a design competition run by the appliance manufacturer Electrolux, so as-of-yet there aren't any plans to manufacture it on a mass scale. We're guessing that Mr. Sun Bae Chang probably wants to keep the awesome power of the Scan Toaster for himself anyway.

Slash Scores Mexican Indie Film

Slash has signed on to compose the score for an upcoming Mexican motion picture called, This Is Not A Movie. The English-language film, which takes place in Mexico City and Las Vegas, was written and directed by Olallo Rubio.

The current Velvet Revolver/former Guns N’ Roses guitarist recently described the movie in Mojo. “It’s very cutting-edge, very artistic and a little bit trippy,” said Slash. “It’s dark and jagged and a bit surreal, in and out of reality, you know?”

For his part, Rubio asked Slash to come up with an “eclectic, psychedelic” soundtrack centered on both acoustic and electric guitars.

“I was looking for a guitarist with the ability to create very emotional music, but at the same time, the freedom to use any type of effects to explore different sounds,” the director said. “Slash was interested in the project, and, so far, he has composed the music for six segments; we’re very excited with his work.” ―Aidin Vaziri

Royal mix-up over lager delivery

Twelve barrels of lager destined for a pub called The Windsor Castle were delivered to the Queen's Berkshire residence by mistake.

A lorry carrying 2,000 pints, ready for England's football match with Croatia, turned up at the real Windsor Castle.

Royal staff had no record of the order and turned the delivery away.

They eventually made it to the pub of the same name, which is five miles away in Maidenhead, but they were three hours late.

Pub manager Misko Coric said: "We have received mail for the royal household here before but I think this is the first time they have received anything meant for us.

"It was a silly mistake - these things can happen.

"The barrels did eventually arrive, about three hours late, so there was no problem."

Women 'more prone to nightmares'

Dr Chris Idzikowski, director of the Edinburgh Sleep Centre said he was not surprised the research showed a gender difference but what is difficult to pick out is whether women are having more nightmares or remembering them better.

"This fits in with what's in the literature.

"Women's sleep tends to be more disrupted and they have more insomnia.

"And more frequent wakening could cause them to pick up on the dream.

"But it could be that disturbed sleep is contributing to the fears."

He added that nightmares in everyone were probably more common than people realised as they are quickly forgotten about.

Women 'more prone to nightmares'

Women experience significantly more nightmares than men and have more emotional dreams, research suggests.

In a study of 170 volunteers asked to record their most recent dream, 19% of men reported a nightmare compared with 30% of women.

Researcher Dr Jennifer Parker of the University of the West of England said there was no difference in the overall number of dreams reported.

Other research has shown women tend to have more disturbed sleep than men.

One factor which has been linked to this is changes in a woman's body temperature during her monthly cycle.

Dr Parker, a lecturer in psychology, said it has been known for a long time that pre-menstrual women report more vivid and disturbing dreams.

"The consistent finding in this research was that women report more unpleasant dreams than men."

Women taking part in the study were much more likely to report dreaming about very emotionally traumatic events such as the loss of a loved one.

Plastic Logic finally ready to launch 'flexible' e-newspaper reader

Later today, Plastic Logic will be showing off its new e-newspaper reader (name, undecided) for the first time. The black and white, E Ink device features a wireless link to download content, room enough to store "hundreds of pages of newspapers, books, and documents," and a display more than twice the size of the wee Kindle while suffering just half the ugly. Better yet, the device is said to use "flexible, lightweight plastic" rather than glass resulting in a reader about one-third the thickness of the Kindle at about the same weight -- the reader itself though, looks rigid. Expected to go on sale during the first half of 2009 with more details, including which news organizations will feed information to the reader, promised for CES in January.

Hendrix's burnt guitar at auction

The first guitar burned on stage by Jimi Hendrix is to go on sale at an auction of rock memorabilia in London.

It is thought the instrument could sell for as much as £500,000.

It is the star item in the sale, which also includes such rarities as the Beatles' first contract, which was signed in 1962

The Fender Sratocaster guitar was played and burnt at a gig in Finsbury Park in London in March 1967. It was the first time he set alight a guitar.

The legendary guitarist and singer later became famous for this gimmick.

The guitar apparently ended up with a business associate, and was only recovered from a garage last year, still bearing the scorch marks of Hendrix's performance.

Also up for sale are what are claimed to be the only remaining fingerprints of Elvis Presley, on a gun permit.

The items are being sold at The Fame Bureau's It's More Than Rock and Roll memorabilia auction.

Rock Hall will honor music innovator Les Paul

clipper's remarks: In 1952, Gibson introduced the Les Paul model, which became the instrument of choice for musicians such as Duane Allman, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page.

"It's not just his innovation and his musical playing, but sort of the residual effects of that guitar," Stewart said. "It's become the beginning point for so many people in music, particularly rock music."

Paul still performs weekly at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York City. He was inducted into the early influence category of the Rock Hall in 1988.

Paul is only the second living recipient of the annual American Music Masters award, which began in 1996 to pay tribute to artists who helped change American culture. Jerry Lee Lewis was the first living recipient in 2007. Past recipients include Woody Guthrie, Muddy Waters and Sam Cooke.

Rock Hall will honor music innovator Les Paul

CLEVELAND - The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will pay tribute to the "father of the electric guitar" this fall.

Les Paul will be honored at the annual American Music Masters series, a weeklong event that begins Nov. 10, Rock Hall officials said Tuesday. A tribute concert — artists will be named later — is scheduled Nov. 15 at Cleveland's State Theater.

Paul, 93, is hoping to attend, said Rock Hall President and CEO Terry Stewart.

Paul began playing guitar as a child and by 13 was performing semiprofessionally as a country-music guitarist. He later made his mark as a jazz-pop musician, recording hits like "How High the Moon" with his wife, singer Colleen Summers, better known as Mary Ford. They divorced in 1964.

He built a solid-body electric guitar in 1941 — an invention born from his frustration that audiences were unable to hear him play.

Lost Hendrix Album Confirmed

A long lost album of tracks Stephen Stills recorded with Jimi Hendrix over 30 years ago has surfaced, and is being readied for release, according to a report from MusicRadar.com that cited confirmation of the recordings' existence and their imminent release from John McDermott, a long-time Hendrix historian and archivist.

"Stephen has been working with Experience Hendrix to compile an album's worth of sessions recorded with Jimi Hendrix during 1969 and 1970," McDermott told MusicRadar.com. According to the report, no official information on the recordings has been released yet, though McDermott did say he would be the collection's co-producer.

Stills apparently found the lost Hendrix recordings among a stack of old tapes he recorded in the 1970s, either by himself or with various other musicians.

Cool Stuff: LEGO Imperial Base

And I thought LEGO’s new Star Wars Death Star set was insane… check out Tim Goddard’s custom created LEGO Imperial Base. The gigantic doors slide open in sunk groove track to reveal a bunch of AT-ATs. This set also includes a fully loaded TIE Fighter launch rack and a small external landing pad. A right hand gun turret can be turned to move TIE Fighters forward.

400GB optical disc invented by Pioneer

clipper's remarks: Blu-ray comes in single layer (25GB) and dual-layer (50GB) flavors. Pioneer does say that because the lens specification for reading the discs is similar to Blu-ray, “it is possible to maintain compatibility” between its disc and Blu-ray discs. That’s not saying it will be compatible, but it would make sense since Pioneer is one of the original Blu-ray Disc Association members. However, plans for that archiving project will have to be put on pause if you want to use this technology. Pioneer is going to demonstrate it at an industry conference next week, but for now the disc is read-only. Eventually, they’ll add write capability as well.

400GB optical disc invented by Pioneer

Got a big archiving project you’ve been itching to do? Pioneer’s latest development could help you keep all your data in one nice, little circular package. The Japanese electronics maker has been working on an optical disc, which, like Blu-ray, can store 25GB of data in a single layer. But Pioneer says it’s one-upped the high-definition format to the sixteenth degree. The company announced today that it has a single disc that contains 16 layers of storage, at 25GB each. That adds up to 400GB of data capable of being stored on a single disc.
