Welcome to binge Britain: Polish photographer documents four years of drunken revelry in Cardiff

As a seasoned traveller, Maciej Dakowicz was keen to get a few snaps of local life during his stay in Britain.

Taken over a series of Friday and Saturday nights on the streets of Cardiff, the Polish student's images provide a shocking insight into alcohol-fuelled debauchery in the Welsh capital.

The unique collection is aptly named 'Cardiff At Night,' and includes a photo of a man walking across a street, his face and shirt covered in blood.

Another captures a reveller seemingly passed out next to a pool of his vomit.

Ghost in the Machine

In this series I showcase a number of portraits of musicians made out of recycled cassette tape with original cassette. Also included are portraits made from old film and reels. The idea comes from a philosopher's (Ryle) description of how your spirit lives in your body. I imagine we are all, like cassettes, thoughts wrapped up in awkward packaging. : )

Rossi did not reveal the name of the upcoming wine. He said it will be a 2007 vintage based on the Sangiovese grape, with a touch of Cabernet and Merlot.

A 2008 Chianti could also go on sale in the fall, but tests on the wine's aging must be conducted before a decision is made, Rossi told The Associated Press by telephone.

The wine, along with other products made on the Sting farm, will also be available at a shop on the property that the singer will inaugurate by June, Rossi said.

After singing of "Fields of Gold," British rock star Sting is tending fields of grapes as he prepares to market red wine made at his country estate in Tuscany.

Some 30,000 bottles of wine produced on the property will go on sale in September, mainly in Britain and the United States, Paolo Rossi, the estate's manager, said Thursday.

In 1997 the former Police frontman purchased a 16th-century villa, called Il Palagio, in Figline Valdarno, a small village some 19 miles (30 kilometers) south of Florence.

Over the years he has turned the surrounding 860 acres (350 hectares) into an organic farm that also produces honey, olive oil, fruit, vegetables and Tuscan salami.

"When I came here to Figline I wanted first of all to feed my family," Sting said on Tuesday during an event at the village where the 57-year-old star spoke of the time he spends at Il Palagio.

USB prosthetic finger gives new meaning to thumbdrives

Jerry Jalava, a Finnish software developer who lost part of his finger in a motorcycle accident last July

when the surgeon assigned to work on Jalava's prosthetic finger discovered his hacking history, he made a clever suggestion: incorporate a USB key into the new digit.

The prosthetic finger contains a 2GB USB key, and Jalava also loaded it with Billix distribution, CouchDBX, and Ajatus to run off the drive, throwing even more geek cred into the mix.

When Jalava needs the drive, he simply pulls it off his left hand, plugs it in, and comes back to pick it up after the transfers are finished. That dispels any parallels to that scene in "Robocop" when he uses the giant spike that comes out of his hand to transfer data from the OCP criminal database to the computer in his head.

Iraqi footballer shot dead by fan

An Iraqi football player has been shot dead by a spectator as he was about to score an equalising goal.

The shooting happened in the last minute of a game between two local rivals on Sunday, police say.

The striker was shot in the head during the match in the city of Hilla, according to local security officials.

The game was being played between Sinjar and Buhayra. The suspected killer has been arrested as police carry out an investigation.

Musical bra is not as sexy as it sounds

The fine folks over at Instructables have posted some wild mods in their time, but the musical bra you see above inhabits its own realm in terms of weirdness and lack of usefulness... unless you really want a bra that makes music of course. The speaker is on the front, with a battery pack between the shoulder blades at the back, and each cup is equipped with eight different "sounds" culled from a small keyboard, which are triggered by custom-made buttons sewn into the bra. Hit the read link for the full rundown of how to make one of your very own, but fair warning: you're going to have to be pretty adept with needle and thread to get this project done, but the final result should be fairly priceless. After all, who doesn't want a clunky, hideous sports bra that makes noise? Exactly.

Fan creates Wembley in front room

A Manchester United fan has recreated Wembley Stadium in his front room because he failed to get tickets to see the team in the Carling Cup final.

Phil Spark's Didsbury home now has a turnstile on the door, fake turf on the floor, stadium seats, crowd pictures on the walls and a pie heater.

The 25-year-old and his friends will watch Sunday's game against Tottenham on a big screen in the mock stadium.

He said: "This is the next best thing to being there.

"I was gutted when I couldn't get a ticket for the game but I've spent the last few weeks making sure I won't miss any of the action or atmosphere," Mr Sparks, a surveyor, said.

"I may even charge my mates to come round for the best view in Didsbury."

Could You See 100 Bands in 100 Nights?

Do you love seeing live bands? New York City ad exec Nick Sonderup sure does, so much so that he's pursuing a "crazy" goal he set for himself: to see 100 bands in 100 nights.

So far, he's on his 34th group, and he's shows no signs of stopping.

Writing in his blog, Sonderup says that he "used to go out and see a lot of music, and I used to write about a lot of music. Sadly, I don't do either that often anymore. I had to change that. And what better place than NYC?"

Sonderup set a timetable for himself: from 23 January to 2 May he would go on a "self-induced, binge-gigging marathon."

The Rules

I must see 100 bands in 100 days. That's (at least) one band every day for 100 days It must be 100 different bands. No repeats When I arrive at the show, I must stay to the end of the main set. Encores are optional.

'Oldest English words' identified

Some of the oldest words in the English and other Indo-European languages have been identified, scientists believe.

Reading University researchers say "I", "we", "two" and "three" are among the oldest in use - "one" came along later.

Using a computer model, the team analysed the rate of change of words and say they can predict which are likely to become extinct.

"Squeeze", "guts", "stick" and "bad" are among those that they believe will become obsolete first.

The researchers' computer program catalogues how modern Indo-European words have changed through the ages, and enables students to type in any date and see which words were in at the time.

It is also able to look forward and predict how words are likely to change in the future.

Using the program, the researchers found that words that are used most commonly - or have very precise meanings - tend to be the oldest and most long-lasting.

REYNARD, NV—Nearly two decades after suspending the game to clean the bathroom and mow the front yard, Nevada resident Dennis Rigali, 29, finally resumed the Super Mario Bros. adventure he started in 1991. "My mom would not get off my back until I did all my laundry, and then I had all this stupid school work I had to finish," Rigali said regarding his decision to leave the game paused until after he picked up his room, graduated from college, and dated a woman for 7 years. "Aw, man. The princess is at the other castle?" As of press time, Rigali had not located former next-door neighbor Jeff Isola to take his turn as Luigi.
