These tales captivate their audience, whose emotions can be inextricably tied to those of the story’s characters. Such immersion is a state psychologists call “narrative transport.”

Clip Source: www.sciam.com

people who perform better on tests of empathy, or the capacity to perceive another person’s emotions, become more easily transported regardless of the story.

Empathy is part of the larger ability humans have to put themselves in another person’s shoes: we can attribute mental states—awareness, intent—to another entity. Theory of mind, as this trait is known, is crucial to social interaction and communal living—and to understanding stories.

promotes social cohesion among groups and serves as a valuable method to pass on knowledge to future generations

stories have an important effect on individuals as well—the imaginary world may serve as a proving ground for vital social skills

Tags: culture, stories, i-research

<clipSource>http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=the-secrets-of-storytelling&sc=MND_20080731</clipSource>

Schools Look to Save Money With Four-Day Week

clipped by: JICWyllie

Clip Source: www.voanews.com

American schools are looking for ways to save money on bus

ride their bikes or find other ways to get to school.

But, as
another effect of the high prices, they may not have to go to school as often.

Some
schools, especially in rural areas, are changing to a four-day week. That means
longer days instead of the traditional Monday through Friday schedule.

But he

that in the future, the growth of online classes could make it possible to
require even fewer days in school. High fuel prices are driving college students
to take more online classes. And in some states, high school students can take

RGS - Today, I was pleasantly surprised to be informed that I was the “featured clipper” on Clipmarks. I had already noted items that I wanted to clip, but might not have got around to doing it. Being Featured Clipper encouraged me that GET CLIPPING, and I did. I clipped stuff from BBC radio on the subjects of Hurricane Katrina (under disaster management), UK identity cards, the £200 a day fee for all trucks in Greater London. I also clipped this year’s Reith Lectures on how popular pressure can improve the lives of the world’s poorest and save the environment too because I feel that my fellow clippers should be aware of such matters.

I felt more part of the Clipmarks community. I also felt that I wanted to tell others outside Clickmarks that I was the featured Clipper. And I like the feeling that I am helping my Followers stay on top of key information flows.

Tags: i-opportunity, social network movement, clipmarks

<clipSource>http://trendmonitor2.wordpress.com/2007/05/11/being-the-featured-clickmarks-clipper/</clipSource>

Social lending gains net interest

clipped by: RobertsClips

Clip Source: news.bbc.co.uk

concept is called social lending and the idea is to introduce people who need money to people who want to lend some - cutting out the middlemen like banks and mortgage companies.

Zopa is a pioneer in this space. For the past two years it has allowed members to borrow and lend on their own terms.

To minimize risk Zopa will spread your loan among a few borrowers. So if are lending £500 ($993) then your money will automatically go to 50 different people.

The social lending site Kiva allows lenders to give to a specific entrepreneur in a poor or developing world country.

Throughout the period of the loan - usually six to 12 months - sponsors receive e-mail updates about how borrowers are getting on as they repay their loan.

FXA World is the world's first peer-to-peer currency exchange where you can trade your foreign currency at a rate that you have set or at the rate the banks trade among themselves.

Tags: money, social lending

<clipSource>http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/click_online/6623267.stm</clipSource>

Free online collaborative mind mapping

clipped by: traviscrocker

Clip Source: www.mindmeister.com

MindMeister supports all the standard features of a classic mind mapping tool - only online, and with as many simultaneous users as you like!
The results reveal an overwhelming and compelling need for a better search capability.

For those of you just arriving from another galaxy, hakia is a new search entity based on the vision that search is about meaning derived from context and relevance. To a logical person of a certain type nothing could be simpler really, but the methodology and technology are of course rather much more complicated.

Tags: search, context, relevance

<clipSource>http://www.profy.com/</clipSource>

Are Designers The Enemy Of Design?

clipped by: hjharris

Clip Source: www.businessweek.com

We all live life in beta now.

Are Designers The Enemy of Design?

Designers are saying that Design is everywhere, done by everyone. So Design is debased, eroded, insulted. The subtext, of course, is that Real design can only be done by great star designers.

Design Democracy is the wave of the future.

We are all designing more of our lives.

So Lesson One here is that the process of design, the management of the design process, is changing radically.

But what it doesn’t do is prioritize cradle-to-cradle design. It doesn’t design a long-cycle product that you can open and upgrade over time. It doesn’t design a process that encourages the reuse materials again and again. It doesn’t demand sustainability.

The broad new paradigm for design—the paradigm you will all work within for the rest of your lives—is sustainability.

top CEOs who embrace design don’t want to call it that. They want to call it “Innovation.”

Innovation, design, eco-imagination,

Tags: csd

<clipSource>http://www.businessweek.com/innovate/NussbaumOnDesign/archives/2007/03/are_designers_t.html</clipSource>

Europe backs Enterprise 2.0

clipped by: JICWyllie

Clip Source: clipmarks.com

Clip Source: www.infospaces.it

Trampoline is the first European “Enterprise 2.0” software developer to receive major investor backing.

Trampoline brings a fresh approach to information management with technology that harnesses social behaviour in the enterprise.
