The next casualty in the console war might be you. In their new 'Playing Dirty' report, environmental organization Greenpeace found that all three home video game consoles - Sony's PS3, Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii - tested positive for a variety of hazardous chemicals, including polyvinyl chloride (PVC), beryllium, bromine, and phthalates. The latter, found in relatively high levels in both the Xbox 360 and PS3, are not permitted in components of toys or childcare products sold in the European Union. However, game consoles are not classified as toys and therefore are not subject to existing legislation. "Whether game consoles are classified as toys or not, they can still contain hazardous chemicals and materials that could harm humans. I recently caught up with the marketing VP during an Electronic Arts press event. At the end of the night, the house music dying down, we had a long chat on a number of topics--many of which pertained to his company's primary platform. What does Valve think of the PC Gaming Alliance? Are they as tired of the PC gaming "problem" as we are? What is at the root of the issue, anyway?

Javascript Super Mario Kart

Seems I just can't let go of Mario. This is a prototype of a Javascript Mario Kart-like racing game. It uses the canvas element to do most of the rendering and should work in both FF2, FF3, Opera(9.27 and beta) and Safari 3.1.1. There are a few glitches in Safari in the kart sprites, but other than that it should be playable. Also, if you're using WebKit nightly builds, make sure you're using the latest, as some of the recent ones had some canvas problems. I haven't even considered getting IE support, sorry. The (minified) code weighs in at about 11 Kb, but unlike the Mario game from last month, this one uses several external image files. This was more a test of how smooth I could get a game like this to feel, anyway, so filesize wasn't an issue. I think it runs pretty ok, though.

At a 24-hour Guitar Hero marathon held by Blockbuster to benefit the nonprofit "Education is Freedom" children's charity, Grapevine, TX native Daniel Johnson blew away the Guiness World Record for a single-song high score. Playing on Expert, no less, on an Xbox 360. So how many points, now? Daniel scored 890,971 on the epic Dragonforce song, eclipsing the previous World Record set by Chris Chike by more than 10,000 points on his first attempt. He didn't brag, though: "I’m glad that I had the opportunity to break the record and help people learn about Education is Freedom," said Johnson.

Castlevania, Pac-Man Films Granted $200 Million Financing

Crystal Sky Pictures has signed a financing deal with production firm Grosvenor Park worth $200 million -- cash that will be used for the company's upcoming films based on Castlevania and Pac-Man, reports Variety The Castlevania flick, currently slated for a 2009 release, was penned by Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil, DOA: Dead or Alive) and will be directed by Sylvain White (Stomp The Yard). Wired.com spoke to Castlevania game producer Koji Igarashi about the film last year. I'd like to speculate on how one creates a plot based on Pac-Man's premise of a yellow circle being chased through a maze by pixelated ghosts, but there's just no way to do it. They'd have better luck writing a film about a bag of sand. Additional films seeing cash from this deal include a biographical look at Virgin mogul Richard Branson, as well as a remake of John Woo's classic action flick Hard Boiled.
