Turin, April 3 - For the second year in a row, sheep are being used to trim the lawns of this city’s parks and save the taxpayer some money.

The first herd of sheep arrived Thursday at the Meisino park, a vast area of land along the Po River on the city’s eastern outskirts, while a second herd will be brought to the Sangone park on Monday.

The two herds will graze in the parks for two months and officials believe this will save the city some 30,000 euros in gardeners’ fees.

”I came here last year as well and it worked out really well. The city saved money and kept the park clean, while I saved money by not having to rent fields to graze my sheep,” Tombolato said.

”There are some minor inconveniences for the public but the initiative has a naturalistic value and is even educational, allowing people, especially young people, to come into contact with and learn more about animals,” a city park official observed.

Israel: Company tries to get tax exemption for bribes

A district court in Tel Aviv has turned down a request from a company, name withheld by the court, that had requested the right to deduct just under $900,000 paid in bribes from the company's tax bill.

The bribes were apparently paid to help secure a business deal in an unknown African country. The company argued that the bribes were necessary as part of the local business custom, and therefore should be tax exempt under Israili law.

The court rejected the petition, and said that companies had to reflect the values of its home state in the way that it carried out business abroad.

Kosovo, a territory of two million people, has been under United Nations protection and policed by 16,000 North Atlantic Treaty Organization troops after NATO intervened in 1999 to halt Slobodan Milseovic's repression of the territory's ethnic Albanians, who make up 95 percent of the province's population. The independence of the poor, predominantly Muslim territory would mark the final stage of the dismemberment of the former Yugoslavia. It is supported by a majority of European Union countries and Washington, but is vehemently opposed by Serbia and its ally Russia.

In war-torn Pristina, pre-independence excitement began to overtake the capital Friday as hundreds of ethnic Albanians from around the world flooded into the city to celebrate

Smiling Albanian border guards welcomed visitors to "our soon-to-be independent country," while hotels erected billboards offering discounts to citizens from countries that recognized an independent Kosovo.

It's absolutely a human zoo - one solution is for tourists to stop going

It is hard not to stare. At the end of a dirt track, deep in the Thai jungle, a group of women sit in the shade, fingering the coils of brass which snake tightly around their unnaturally long, giraffe-like necks.

For years the prospect of visiting one of three "long-necked" Kayan villages in this remote corner of north-western Thailand, close to the Burmese border, has been a major lure for foreign tourists.

But in a dramatic intervention, the United Nations is now talking of the need for a tourism boycott, amid allegations that the Kayan are being trapped in a "human zoo".

The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) says that for the past two years, the Thai authorities have refused to allow a group of 20 Kayan to leave the country, despite firm offers to resettle them in Finland and New Zealand.

But in Japan, a group of Buddhist monks

have secured a regular spot at a jazz bar where they seek to enlighten and entertain.
