So what is “Less Known”? Well, we used the Alexa ranking as our criteria, all the sites in this list are not in the top 5000 (5000 most visited sites on the Internet). The order of the sites is random, and the list includes some meta search engines as well.

Do you want to download a bunch of free videos for your cellular phone? This technique will show you how to search google to find tons of open directories containing free cell phone videos. No P2P or torrents required. Start your collection from the open collections of others.

I know I beat this poor search technique to death; however, I always enjoy finding new uses for it.

This time we will be using a google search to find people's open directories of 3gp videos. This is a common video format used to view video on cell phones.

Open Directories of 3gp files:

-inurl:htm -inurl:html -inurl:asp intitle:"index of" 3gp

Specific Searches for 3gp files:

Google: filetype:3gp inurl:3gp

Now this search is not nearly as sexy as it brings in a ton of junk. However, this search casts your net wider. The magic here is the filetype and inurl filters telling google to only include these video files in your search. By leaving these filters in place, you can add more search terms to narrow your search.

For example, to search 3gp video files that are associated with rock...

filetype:3gp inurl:3gp rock

If you don't want to remember the search format, just bookmark this page and visit as often as you wish.

Stop Downloading Fakes and Junk From BitTorrent

Many experienced file-sharers can’t understand why relative novices manage to download so much junk from BitTorrent. Fake downloads that never finish, video files which refuse to play, movies that require special players and unwatchable video are easily avoided by those in the know. But how do they do it?

1. Always read the comments

Movies should never come as .zip or an .exe file

If the movie won’t play with VLC Media Player there’s every chance it’s a fake

2. Can the source be trusted?

3. Is the file actually released already?

use sites such as VCDQuality and Nforce.nl

By copying and pasting this exact filename into Google, a list of almost guaranteed non-fake torrents appear.

4. TorrentSpam?

Another place to check is TorrentSpam.

a single rar files is often an indication for a passworded file

Tracker names which look very similar to well known trackers are often fake

scan before opening!

The µTorrent WebUI can be used to access µTorrent from an external computer. This also opens the possibility to handle your torrents from your browser window. We’ve discovered a Firefox extension that makes using the WebUI a lot easier.

The Firefox extension for µTorrent allows you to drag and drop .torrent links onto the WebUI window and shows the current upload and download speed in the status bar.

The upload and download speed remains visible if you close the WebUI screen. The extension works fine in Firefox 2.0.

In order to use the Firefox extension you need to install the WebUI, and have µTorrent up and running. Once you’ve installed the extension (direct download), you need to enter your settings (IP address, port & password) in the configuration screen of the Firefox extension and you’re ready to go.

You can use the Alt+U shortcut to show and hide the sidebar window, and try adding some torrents by dragging links to .torrent file onto the WebUI screen. Although this version of the extension is just an experimental release, all seems to work fine. For more info, the latest updates, and bug reporting hop over to the thread at the µTorrent forums.

Tired of fake torrents ? Block the sources

We all knew and heard about the common method to upload fake torrents into the torrent system to punish downloaders of copyrighted media files. The Torrentfreak blog reports that some torrent admins were able to identify some of the IP ranges that spread fake torrents and probably also the company that is behind it. The easiest way to cope with the situation would be to block the IP ranges either in your firewall or in a utility such as Peer Guardian. Below are the information for Peer Guardian 2, simply use the IP ranges if you want to block the IPs in your firewall.

The fake torrents look like real torrents on first glance and are disguised as valid group releases such as Battlestar Galactica S03E07 REPACK DSR XviD-ORENJi. According to nforce.nl Orenji is the group that is releasing Battlestar Galactica episodes.

Everyone should be well aware that the worst thing that can happen is not a crippled file but legal consequences. Those trackers surely log every IP and connection that is made and this might lead to legal consequences as well. I’am no lawyer but it is at least doubtful if this is indeed copyright infringement if you download a file that is not working at all.

Isohunt.com December update, 2006: Isohunt has nearly 400,000 torrents in their database. Also noteworthy: any Isohunt torrent listed as "ISOhunt release" means that it is a file verified by the administrators...a nice feature to help you locate authentic torrents and not fake files. On a sad note: Isohunt is being sued by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) for copyright infringement. If you want to use this tremendous Canadian site, you better use it while you can.

Torrentbox.com Update: like Isohunt, Torrentbox is being sued by the MPAA as of February 28, 2006. The days for this fine search engine may be numbered.

Torrentspy.com offers over 420,000 torrents in its database, the largest torrent index that is readily available to the public. Enjoy it while you can.

TorrentTyphoon.com (a unique bittorrent meta-search engine that searches several of the most popular sites. Unfortunately, it does not do a good job categorizing the torrent files themselves)

Mininova.org has 150,000 torrents indexed as of December, 2006. Mininova is the successor to Suprnova, one of the original big torrent databases of the Web.

The Pirate Bay (Pirate Bay, by readership size, is the most popular torrent search site today. Pirate Bay has an immense database of 360,000 torrents, the third largest database after Isohunt and Torrentspy.)
(May 31, 2006 update: The Pirate Bay has been shut down by Swedish authorities. Details are available on the Pirate Bay home page.)
