Friends, before the iron grows too cold, I'd like to play a little game called Hitler or Falwell! This is a simple game of Godwinism, in which I present a quote and YOU guess who said it! Let's begin, shall we?

1. A woman is suing the pastor of her church after her attempts at receiving spiritual guidance led to his using Biblical verses to forcibly spank and rape her:

The paddling escalated from there, she said, with Mr. Allen ordering her to pull down her jeans and then her underwear. Ms. Kelly said she was hesitant but believed so devoutly in Mr. Allen’s power that she viewed it as a spiritual father/daughter relationship.

After the third meeting, she said, Mr. Allen told her to grab her ankles and swatted her once with a green wooden paddle.

Around March or April 2005, Mr. Allen made sexual advances and eventually added sex as part of her punishment, she said.

Because having sex with your pastor is a perfectly logical punishment for God to order upon someone, right? Perhaps we should be asking, “Who Would Jesus Do?”

Over the years I have discussed evolution and creationism with a number of theists,
and they often have many misconceptions about exactly what evolution is. I would like to
try to set the record straight here, as well as provide a useful introduction to the theory
of evolution.

Evolution is a fact. Shocking and controversial this might sound,
but bear with me. I'm not talking about Darwin's theory of evolution
by natural selection. I'm talking about the changes in the gene pools
of all species that occur every single day due to births and deaths.
If you accept that most members of a species do not all have the exact
same DNA (which is easily demonstrated), and you accept that sexual
reproduction combines the DNA of two parents to form a slightly different
combination of genes, and you accept that not all creatures survive
long enough to be able to reproduce, then....

Tags: evolution, creationism, atheism, facts

<clipSource>http://www.abarnett.demon.co.uk/atheism/evolution.html</clipSource>

Christianity's Sins Against Science

clipped by: Fracture
clipper's remarks: Great comments after the entry, too.

Clip Source: scienceblogs.com

I'm reading all of these New Atheist books, I keep reading these condemnations of Christians being anti-science, but no one ever bothers to explain exactly what they mean by that. I mean, what the Hell does Galileo's trial have to do with Christian attitudes today, except as some sort of analogy for... something current? But what?

Here's my quick list of objections to religion. Please note that I understand there will be individual variation, both between people in a sect and between sects themselves (Calvinists and Unitarians will have different views of destiny, for instance, and Buddhists seem less prone to the tyranny of authoritarianism). Also, the general public will embrace these sins a little less fervently than creationists and fundamentalists, but they're all there to some extent—while sometimes I'll mention creationists as extreme examples, that does not mean I am implying that all religious people are creationists.

Tags: atheism, xtian, christian, sin, science, freethinker

<clipSource>http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/</clipSource>

Fight the Growing Stupid

clipped by: Fracture

Clip Source: stupidevilbastard.com

At the recent Republican debate, three out of ten Republican candidates stated that they did not believe in evolution. Welcome to my world Mrs. Michelle Incanno. It’d be really nice if I could make it through the day without having umpteen million Christian messages shoved in my face whether it’s those stupid billboards that pretend to be messages from God or the various True Believers who show up at my door to ask if I know where I’m going once I die or the various businesses that feel the need to promote Christianity with their services. If I ran off and bitched at a journalist every time I was confronted by something like that they’d have to print a special newspaper just for my complaints.
