The average adult recognises 30,000 to 50,000 words, but only uses 10,000 to 15,000. However, there are actually about 1 million words in the English language, some of which - although obscure, forgotten, or rarely used - are worth reviving.

BOANTHROPY - A type of insanity in which a man thinks he is an ox.
CHANTEPLEURE - To sing and weep at the same time.
DIBBLE - To drink like a duck, lifting up the head after each sip.

Top Ten Reasons to Make Gay Marriage Illegal

01) Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

02) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

03) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

04) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn’t changed at all like many of the principles on which this great country was founded; women are still property, blacks still can’t marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

05) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of marriages like Britney Spears’ 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

06) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn’t be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren’t full yet, and the world needs more children.

07) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

08) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That’s why we have only one religion in America.

09) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That’s why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven’t adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans. .

The Lovely Emily calls me last night; we're going to try to see Marie Antoinette on Friday. She's suggested that we all (her, me, and Brett the Vet) take some kind of trip next Septemberish, and last night, she has an idea for the destination. (Keep in mind, also, that the only time I ever left the U.S. was to go to Cuba, I was hoping for a country where I spoke the language--French, English or Spanish--or something at least close to it, and that my friends are better-traveled than I am, so there's an issue of me wanting to go places they've already been.) However, we're both on cell phones, she's in her car, and the connection isn't all that great.

WHAT SHE ACTUALLY SAYS: "We could go to Quebec!"

WHAT I HEAR: "We could go to Tibet!"

CLEO: "... Oh. Well... oh. Yeah, I... I guess."

EMILY: "Come on, it would be fun!"

CLEO: "Isn't it... kind of cold up there?"

EMILY: "Well, I mean, we would go in September, so it wouldn't be that bad."

CLEO: "Aren't there... a lot of mountains...?"

EMILY: "Well, we're not going to climb them or anything."

CLEO: "And... yaks?"

EMILY: "What?"

My brother worked in the college newspaper when he was a student. One of his favorite tales to tell was the student election one year...

See, they write most of it (brief recap of the campaigns and issues, etc.) before the actual results are in; some portions merely have placeholders for the victors' names that get replaced at the last moment. Naturally, the editors are careful to make sure all those placeholder names are fixed before they go to print... but this one year no one thought to check the headline itself. Thus, the next day, the newspaper proudly declared in 50-pt font: ELMO WINS ELECTION.
