Abstract

In this article, Georges Bataille’s notion of intimacy will be re-interpreted to show that it has a role to play in the evolution of technology. The specifically human form of intimacy can be experienced through the successful adoption of technological devices that have the qualities necessary to fit in and work out in our life context. If they manage to become part of our life, then we experience them as projections of our psychophysical personality, and, as such, they escape our positing, objectifying consciousness. Intimacy can be seen as the organizing principle that shapes the evolution of technology towards an ideal end that promises at least an approximation to the absolute intimacy that is unique to the gods.

What is the "us" that the genes would determine?

The idea that "genes determine us" refers to pre-determination .

But pre-determinism means that the initial condition specifies what will be, or how it will be, in a later condition. But that cannot explain what takes place because the initial condition is the initial structure -- which will change through interaction with the medium, which is independent. And this is the beauty of the medium. This is the beauty of the surroundings in which we are — our surroundings are independent from us.

What guides this path? What guides the path of the realisation of the individual living with the realisation of the living of the many generations?

I would say that what guides this is pleasure. Yes, pleasure!

We are creating the world that we live. Not the world that we deserve, the world that we live.

Metaphor is not just a poet's tool to express touching feelings. Metaphor is pervasive in our language. "Her life is a nightmare", "My room is a jungle", "She is a snake", "This job is a piece of cake", etc.: we communicate all the time metaphorically.

The reason metaphor is so convenient is that it allows us to express a lot starting with very little: metaphor is a linguistic device to transfer properties from one concept to anoether.

Metaphor is so pervasive that every single word of our language may have originated from a metaphor. Some thinkers have even suggested that all language may be metaphorical. Given the importance of language among our mental faculties, some thinkers go even beyond and maintain that metaphor is a key element of reasoning and thinking in general.

British archeologist Steven Mithen, while researching prehistorical civilizations, has become convinced that metaphor was pivotal for the development of the human mind.

With its triumphant descriptions of a range of subatomic phenomena, quantum mechanics is one of the most successful scientific theories of all time. Now it holds out the tantalising prospect of explaining one of the great mysteries in biology: the nature of consciousness. It may even explain why dreams are dream-like.

Is it a vase or two faces?

These hopes stem from a quantum model of consciousness developed by Efstratios Manousakis of Florida State University, Tallahassee. It is inspired by the "image flips" the brain makes when faced with an ambiguous image such as the one to the right, which can look like either a vase or two faces. Psychologists have long been fascinated by the fact that the brain cannot consciously perceive both versions simultaneously.
