Less attention, however, has been paid to Bush's motivation for imagining a new generation of information technologies; it was his hope that more powerful tools, by automating the routine aspects of information processing, would leave researchers and other professionals more time for creative thought. But now, more than sixty years later, it seems clear that the opposite has happened, that the use of the new technologies has contributed to an accelerated mode of working and living that leaves us less to think, not more. In this talk I will explore how this state of affairs has come about and what we can do about it.

Tags: david levy, levy, vannevar bush, thinking, creativity, knowledge, technology, science, video, google

<clipSource>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHGcvj3JiGA</clipSource>

13 Most Unusual Search Engines You Should Remember

clipped by: Silkweaver

Clip Source: www.smashingapps.com

You already have regular visits to usual search engines every day like Google, Msn, Yahoo, Altavista, Excite.

There are too many other search engines available to help you to search better but with a different way as compare to the routine searching.

I have selected 13 most unusual search engines for you to introduce.

Every search engine listed here has some different way of searching or unusual presentation.

Deligio search, discover and share your favorite software / freeware / shareware with tags and social bookmarking

Searchme Visual Search

Yoozila

Ebook Search -

    Find meaning, not just links.

Now defining over 2,000,000 terms, phrases and acronyms!

Clip Source: www.metaglossary.com

"Meta" means beyond, more comprehensive, or more highly organized, and
with respect to other dictionaries and glossaries, MetaGlossary is all
these things.

MetaGlossary harvests definitions from the entire web,
the world's largest, constantly-updated repository of information.

Hence,
it surpasses traditional dictionaries, which grow more out of date with
each passing day

MetaGlossary is as dynamic as the web, offering the
most current information out there on the most contemporary topics.

However, unlike other search engines, MetaGlossary is able to precisely
extract the meanings of terms and phrases from the often frustratingly
unmanageable mass of information on the web

It provides you with concise,
direct explanations for terms and phrases, not just endless links to sift
through in search of a comprehensive definition.

What is Transhumanism and how is it related to Buddhist practice? Will technology enable us to radically extend our lifespans, help us control our thoughts and emotions, and bring about the potential to upload our consciousness into virtual reality spaces? And if so, what are the deeper implications for our contemplative traditions. Will these advances actually support the deepening of wisdom? According to professor James Hughes, a Buddhist practitioner and leading voice in the Transhumanist movement, these advances will enable us to deconstruct the notion and experience we have of an “authentic self” and will support the development of happiness, and the cessation of suffering. ( MP3)

It helps us to
find our way through the jungle of possibilities that life presents.

This website is about philosophy in the widest sense. It includes science,
religion, mythology and other fields of thought that are not within the
traditional scope of philosophy. However, it makes not much sense to treat
these fields separately. Everything is connected. If one views anything
from any possible angle, it can only increase understanding.

thebigview.com was established in October 1999 with the idea of rendering
a bird's eye perspective on various philosophical topics, hence, the name.

You see a word or short phrase from the 530,000 already suggested by other players, and you enter the first response that enters your head. Although you type alone, you benefit from the wisdom of the masses. The word associations you make are scanned for matches and listed with the rest of your recent work. You can view the cloud, which is really a visual thesaurus kind of weighted network showing the connections to a given term.

Marketers could conceivably enter a term and check the related words, in part to avoid ambiguity and semantic competition, and partly to steer clear of easy targets for derogatory associations. Designers might peer into the brain of specific users to see how they make sense of certain words.

<clipSource>http://www.blogschmog.net/2007/12/12/the-human-brain-cloud/</clipSource>

Changing Images of Man

clipped by: thisnamecantbetaken
clipper's remarks: I haven't read this yet myself, so I have absolutely no idea what it's about, but it sounded interesting, so I clipped it. "Changing Images of Man" has been -- much like Jose Delgado's "Physical Control of the Mind" -- the subject much more speculation than actual study. If you're unfamiliar with this report, here's the blurb that accompanied the Torrent:

Stanford Research Institute (now SRI International) released a report in 1974 that has become a classic in the "alternative futures" literature.

explores the reasons why changes may have to take place in the fundamental conceptual premises, laws, attitudes and ethics once suitable for guiding the development of the United States and other highly industrialized nations if a humane (and "workable") future is to be achievable.

changes may be occurring

an evolutionary transformation

as profound as the transition in Europe when the Medieval Age gave way to the rise of science

DOWNLOAD

(30 MB) in PDF

Tags: the, future, is, now

<clipSource>http://www.skilluminati.com/research/entry/changing_images_of_man_in_pdf_format/</clipSource>

The Story of Stuff

clipped by: wildcat
clipper's remarks: movie unclipable, go to site, take a minute and watch

Clip Source: www.storyofstuff.com

What is the Story of Stuff?

From its extraction through sale, use and disposal, all the stuff in our lives affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden from view. The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world.
